@Nichrida Joe does make it in the end (see 13x02, "Graduation Day"), but given the traumatic circumstances -- being paralysed and tied up while watching as Abby passes out, unable to help her; having Joe born prematurely and losing the opportunity to have another child; as well as already having lost his previous wife and children -- I'd say Luka crying is more than a justifiable reaction.
