In that snowfall, tractor trailers had the wheels removed and skis fitted, vehicles, of which there were not many, had chains on their wheels but the place was far from drawn to a standstill as happens down here on mainland Scotland. Bunch of softies down here.
I think it was in 52 that there was a, rare for these times, snowfall that covered Deerness Primary school in a huge drift. Didn't stop one kid arriving at school and helping to dig their way in. We just had to pop through the adjoining door from the house where my mum had hot cocoa etc ready for the pupils and my dad had the fire going in the classroom.

We lived on Burray for a short while.
Often go down to St Margaret's Hope (or was it St Margerets?) on bicycles over the causeway.
