While I tend to be a more fiscally conservative gay man, voting for a "conservative" or wanting to be known as "conservative" while being gay is a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
hey i saw tony perk ins i bleieve recently giving head to one of his elders of his church..looked like it weas a rather religious moment....a climax at sorts
the fuckwit had no problem with conservatives passing medicare part d or no child left behind. no problem with the patriot act trouncing the 4th amendment. no problem with the largesse of the military. tony is a faux conservative fuckwit. good riddance
He's right. It's not a debate among true conservatives. True conservatives know the government has no place denying marriage to anyone. It's only scary totalitarians like FRC that keep trying to deny fundamental freedoms. Sadly even GOProud is put a position where they have to repudiate the court decisions that have historically granted civil rights, lest they be rejected by an increasingly radicalized Republican party.
Im a fiscally conservative,socially liberal republican.Keep govt out of our wallets and our bedrooms.I have no problem with gay people as I don't with any other "group".The problem arises when we look at rights through a prism of "group rights" - gay rights,black rights, white rights, workers rights and so on .An individual should have freedom of association with any other consenting individual so long as they do not infringe on other's rights. And we have a constitution and courts for that.
@gunsnroses2020 That is all fine and good but groups who face discrimination whether it is legal or extralegal must organize to encourgage the majority and the government to remove discriminatorty laws and discriminitory practices where possible. There is room for discussion about where identity politics is not useful to society or even the minority group.
@edgwaterprog Beyond considering every person through the prism of individual rights,"discriminatory practices" is very broad. I mean girls scouts will discriminate against boys when they are hiring. Same with the senior citizens club...Discrimination is very subjective. I just don't believe in identity politics. The same way govt cant enforce morality, they cant enforce identity..which is why DADT was an idiotic rule.Disruptive sexual behavior,homo or hetero should be dealt with equally.
@gunsnroses2020 I do agree that minorities, including sexual minorities, need to be tollerant of the intollerance of the majority but it does not mean that they should not organize to push forward their political goals. DADT would not have been overturned if the gay rights organizations had not made it a priority for President Obama and the last Congress.
@edgwaterprog Yea I'm not against anyone organizing.I'm saying it is wrong for politicians(liberal/conservative)to group people based on discriminatory characteristics.Both sides have used DADT as a divisive issue.It was primarily a failure of govt,had there been no political discrimination in the first place this wud never have been an issue :).In a broader sense,the govt shud never trample on the rights of the minority even when elected by the vast majority-both economically and socially.
@rg0057 Who are you talking about the GOPac representative or Tony Perkins?
If you are talking about Mr. Perkins that is about the best that the far right religious crowd can do who are not sitting in the corner frothing at the mouth muttering to themselves.
If you are talking about the spokesman for GOPAc that is about the best you can expect from a self-loathing anti-gay-rights gay organization.
Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council has called for the exile of gays and lesbians from the United States. He is not a credible person and his group has been designated a Hate Group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
@HenhousetheRed Or at least as much...I guess they would still like to be rounded up at their DuPont Circle nightclubs every Friday and Saturday evening, "like the good 'ole days". We know that is Tony Perkins dream.
i have never grasped why people want to be labeled as conservative.. i feel like its the same as saying "i fear change and i want things to be just as it is\was"
@sensur1 I think it's because most Conservatives are religious. They're afraid of changes because that might affect their religious worldview, which would prove God wrong.
I don't have especially high regard for GOProud, but I give them credit for spooking the radically conservative contingent in the Republican Party and conservative movement more generally. If GOPround is able to keep the Republicans busy with an internal kulturkampf, I say, "Well done!"
@ProfMTH Well, that would certainly be interesting if they could pull off a "kulturkampf" but they have already given up on most of the social issues they should be fighiting for in the conservative movement. Basically, they have told them "we are just like you in every way, and we will not bring our boyfriends to the meetings with us."
Once an organization has been labeled a hate group, then its representatives shouldnt be on TV. When is the last time you saw a white supremacist on TV?
A gay organization that wants to put their civil rights in the hands of bigots to vote on? Talk about self loathing! Civil rights are not negotiable or subject to ballot initiatives, Alabama would still be a Jim Crow sate if that were the case! GOPROUD can go pound sand.

@sensur1
At their very best (which is not often, sadly), conservatives:
- value *non-harmful* traditions;
- have a realistic view of human nature;
- demand that those who want to legislate to solve problems carry the burden of proof.
These are all things that we liberals should work on.
simplic1000 1 year ago
@simplic1000 What is a "realistic" view of human nature? Is that the intolerant, control freak nature of people like Tony Perkins.
