  • i could listen to you talk all day, its like jeff bridges found a hobby lol

  • what about how to attach the bow stem?

  • cool video.... will download your 3D book... looking forward to build my own boat... woohhooo.... :)

  • How much horse power

  • @webkinzlovers1000

1 to 200 - depending on which boat you're talking about

  • @tjkid07 That would be to 225, don't forget about the one I'm building. It's all covered for the winter. Check my facebook if you want to see it with the "monster" on the back.

  • Eureka Eureka

    get it ?

cause that's what archemedes said ?

    okay

  • The 34 foot model would be the Lone Star, however I keep checking the order form closely, the 34 foot Lone Star is NOT on the order form, however your website shows there is. This is the case when a phone number comes in handy. Thank you.

  • Could you possibly post a phone number in order to contact you with questions about your building plans and model comparisons, payment confirmation, ect? You website doesn't have one. Every company that sells boat plans has a phone number and an actual person you can talk to, except yours. I want to buy and build from the 34 foot dory plans you have posted, but the model is not on the order form.

  • @GoldDredger35

Please email me at info(at)spirainternational(dot)com for the appropriate telephone number. The web site gives you a skype ID where you can talk to me live as well.

  • if i buy one of your plan, can i ask you to explain some of them to me?

  • Hi thanks for the video

  • Thank you so much for sharing!

  • what thickness plywood do you reccomend using?

  • Great information!

  • @dizzylizzy6 if you don't mind me asking how much would you say you have invested at finish product?

  • Could you put together a cost of the boat you just detailed? I want it so i can put the money together before i tell my dad for his birthday.. He loves boats, hes a lifelong sailor, and he would really enjoy this as a project. Thanks a million!

  • Ha I just built one of your Kachemak boats last month. Put a lot into every cut on every piece of clear lumber I could manage to find. My neighbors were always complimenting the progress and I explained every step as I was learning myself. Soon they started giving me singular items to help offset cost (cleats, lights, inverter, lights, battery, controls etc) Today I was bless with a fully functional 75 Hp Johnson Stinger.Little did I know I wasn't building a boat, I was helpin build a community

  • tnx dude

  • Hi,

I would like to make a boat for bay and sea fishing and also with a swimming deck if possable but I get pissed off at how the wood curve's and I don't know how too curve it.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm very pleased with this guy! I just bought the v bottom dory 19ft plans. The price is right and it really is something that some one with no exuberance can do. he makes sure its easy to fallow. These youtube vids are great made me really interested. I look forward to making this boat! Thank you sir!

  • Dude we don't want to know ur life story we just want to know how to build a boat

  • my dream job,

    Marine engineering

  • hi!ill start it once i got money!

  • what size engine would u recommend for the 14ft grand banks dory

  • Thank you!!! great video!!!

  • nice work Jeff, thanks for the videos.

  • GOOD JOB SIR!!!

  • this may sound stupid...but how do you curve the wood? do you wet it our force it into place?? i could really appreciate the extra help thanks, jake

  • very inspiring.. A double ended one might be a great sail boat.

I'm wondering if I should just modify and older fiberglass model.

But your concept with beefed up ribs, maybe 2 x 6 lumber might be really neat.

what kind of plywood did you use?

  • im looking to buy some of your plans but dont know what plans to go for im looking for a fishing boat that holds four or five people v bottom for the sea

  • @odinegan

Try the Hatteras - a 19' v-bottom dory, or the 17' version Kachemak. They have been built all over the world and the owners love them. Check my web site for more info and slide shows.

  • Good show! very informative, have you tried bigger models? good luck with the sound check next time

  • What sailboat design would you build to hold a 3,000 lb Jeep and an additional 5,000 lbs?

  • Love it!! gathering a crew to build one now.

  • Thanks alot for your video and web site. it very nice for you to share your deep knowledge and experience with us over internet. Thanks alot again from Turkey. Now I'm going to build my own boat. :) ( I mean soon )

  • How many liters of epoxy you used for the whole boat??

  • Thanks mate,

    Very helpful, stuff.

  • colud i build a cabin on this boat? and make it into a mini cabin cruiser boat??

  • what if I have an idea for a schooner? :) Kinda like the a smaller version of the ship in Peter Pan actually.....

  • I am looking to build a cheap, probably a 4 foot by 10 foot wood boat for my friend and I, but we have no money so I am wondering if you could try to make one out of household supplies, maybe, but nice boat

  • On the home page of your website... what is that blue/white boat at the top? I like the looks of that. Can't seem to figure out which design it is... but then again I look at your site at 2 am so I may be missing something. I would like something like that with a topside structure of sorts. Something you could stay the weekend on with tooling around. Is it obvious I know very little about boats?? Thanks

  • That's a 24' Key Largo Carolina Dory

    spirainternational(dot)com/hp_keyl.html

  • @cap12206 If you get a chance please look at my Japanese water shoe.

  • Very interesting video!

I'm curious, how is the fairing made to meet and seal at the centre of bow? As it must be slightly more complicated than just laying up and fastening down as It could be elsewhere on the frame.

  • @luketorpedo Hi:

This is covered in a How-To guide on my website available for download on the free boatbuilding information page at spirainternational(dot)com/hp_free.html

  • what type of wood do u hve

  • I'm building a wooden john boat. I made a few of them threw the years.

What thickness of plywood do you use on bottom and sides?

Last one I made I used 3/4 plywood on a 13 footer and was too heavy.

I'm thinking 1/2 plywood on bottom for a 14 footer?

  • On a 14 footer, 1/2 is plenty. Actually, I'd use 3/8s with a layer of glass and epoxy.

  • hi great vid but can you use dis boat as a sail boat??

  • hi i was just curious as to what thickness the plywood used for the sides and bottom. Thankyou Dillon

  • Hi:

Fir is a kind of wood and clear means knot free. You can find all about the kind of wood to use by downloading my boatbuilding lumber "How-To Guide" here: spirainternational(dot)com/hp_free.html

  • thanks for your reply, and thanks for your help. what is a clear fir?

  • hi i downloaded your plans for the dory boat to build. but i cant figure out how you curved the sides of the boat top and bottom. i am able to understand everything else except this one. the dory i hope to build is on where you have the free plans. thanks pat

  • Hi:

You may have to steam the sheer clamps and chine logs. The best way is to wrap them ion rags and pour boiling water on them and let them soak for an hour or so. That'll soften them up enough to make the curves.

  • good job I am going to try to built a littlr boat to use it on lake so I am watching around for some informations.

  • Hi Jeff, do you think the same technology you describe would work on a 'blue water' boat?

  • Hi:

Sure. Check out some of the many blue water boat plans on my site at spirainternational(dot)com

    -Jeff

  • savage stuff!! :)

  • Apply these skills here :)

    youtube.com/watch?v=tkG-yiKRqd4

  • The one part about building a boat that I haven't figured out completely is how to attach the deck in a seamless manner.

  • I grew up in Oregon. The ocean has always held a fascination for me. Still does, tho I am now in Oklahoma(how much farther can you GET from the ocean?) I always wanted a sailboat built for open waters. Freaked out everybody around me as a teenager just talking about going out there(and I didn't even HAVE a boat!)

Your video is very inspiring by showing that boats can be built at home with common tools/skills. I hope that many follow your advice and get out there in their own boat.

  • Sir, you're an inspiration, i've been dreamin for so long now i'm starting to follow your instruction and logging into your site. thanks God Bless and more power

  • does the v in the front of the boat have a 90 degrees angle, and then turned around??

  • Cool man .

  • wan you awsome! tnx alot...

  • I would like to see you build it not stupid pictures. The way you told us to build it was good though

  • it's a great video..very interesting

  • dude fix the sound

  • awesome, straightforward fundamentals, I like it that way.

  • That is one beautiful boat and some great workmanship there. I'm going to check out this website. Thank for the video.

  • Awsome boat i wish i could make it that good. Its a very good boat im going to see if i can get some materials to try out building a boat atleast halfway as good as yours. Thanks for the tips and the video which was really gud by the way.

  • Thank you for the info.

  • Would anyone be able to help those poor stricken countries, like India, how to make small boats for their communities, to use during the monsoon times?

  • can you saturate and hypoxi AND fiberglass after using the hypoxi?

  • Hi! my name is Dennis. Thanks for sharing this video. I was born and raised in Philippine island of Negros and thinking of building my own fishing boat down there and this video help.

  • You are so nice. Thank you for all of the great resources and videos.

  • what kind of wood do you use?????

  • about how much would that lumber cost?? like a rough estimate?

  • Great Video! Heres some boat building plans if anyone needs them.

  • the sound is fine here.check your sound settings on your computer at home.

  • Thank you, this is very impressive.

  • Very good tutorial

    Thanks a lot

    I will visit your website.

    :))

  • thankyou very much for this, it is so kind of you to share your knowledge.

  • WOW !

  • This brings back memories of one of my first jobs out of high school in the 60's. I worked as an apprentice at the Taft Marine Boatworks in Minneapolis, MN. After WWII Taft was a popular wood boat company, offering a range of kits for runabouts and small cruisers. There was one competitor but the name escapes me. The boat kit industry faded as the sailboat kits became Taft's main product line. I recall the smell of the oak, spruce, and mahogany raw wood that was milled into the various pieces.

  • i plan to start with a 16 buy 4 native style canoe which i will be altering slitly from your boat plans so I thank you greatly for sharing your knowledge out of love of the water and not Greed! (>'.')>

  • Jeff you Rock!! I've been digging for information on boats for a while and it seems people with knowledge don't like to share it I'm a mech in fl buy trade and have always loved the three sides of fl and all of its rivers. This christmas i've constructed a nativaty for my mother in law and relized i have a deep love of carpentery

  • WOW! ... thanks ... great work

  • great work! easy to understand too. What about sailboats?

  • Thank you sir for posting this manual.

    It is very useful!

    Best regards.

  • Sr. thx a lot for share all your experience building boats ... i ll tell my father to build our own boat ... he get stolen his boat :(

  • Thank you for the video. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Latvia.

  • Ha !

Is that a tiny man or the biggest damn dinghy I ever saw?

  • Hey, thats some good handy work you got there. Could you send me your boat plans? I want to build one before school reopens.

  • You can download them from my web site at spirainternational(dot)com. Some are free and some you have to pay for.

  • Good process for to make the pattern, and after to make it in fiberglass.

  • Firstly, single best how-to video on simple boat building. For my level of woodworking skills, it definitely seems possible.

Secondly, do you know how much it would cost to construct such a boat, including wood, waterproofing, etc?

Thirdly, I'm looking to build a boat this coming summer and spend some serious time on it. Any ideas?

  • Nice

  • thanks for the video. just 1 question, you say some people coat the ply with fiber-glass, does the expansion and contractions of the ply not crack it? from rain, different temperatures etc. to cover a boat of that size with fibre-glass in Ireland would probably cost =$500. help! thanks again.

  • No. They don't crack with epoxy wet glass. A small boat can be glasses for about $100 US with two layers of 6 oz cloth and epoxy. It's hard to conceive that shipping would be that much. I don't know if you need to pay taxes for importing materials though.

  • there's a really bad buzzing sound when you speak

  • excellent video- thankyou very much :)

  • this would help people a lot, thanks.

do you have blue prints in your site?

  • This is a great video. Very inspiring. Thank you for submitting.

  • you have been working in Philippines?

  • hey im looking do build a speed boat.

id like to run my ideas through a profesional

  • Do you offer the Blueprints ?

    Thanks.

  • Yes. Click on the tjkid07 channel link and there's a link to the web site where there are lots of different boat plans you can build,, including some free downloadable boat plans - one for a kayak and one for a small dory.

  • Oye ... nada mas te hace falta volar! Como SUPERMAN! LO que te hace falta es humildad/// ves! Ojala lo comprendas!

  • Great video, very helpful,I live by the sea aswell and i love boats, been thinking of building my own for a long time now

  • how much would these materials cost?

  • around 50-70 quid

  • to build the hull

  • Nice video, much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Jeff you are the man... !!! what a great video thank you soo much... a lot of things i didnt do right and my last boat failed....THANKS FOR THE VID AGAIN.

  • hi,老头,I love you!

  • Wow, thanks. What a generous guy.

  • very very good

  • Hello Sir,

I'm a young entrepreneur, age 20, with my high school diploma and no college degree. I have done many fiberglass projects and would like to build a boat such as the one you have built in this video. I'm just wondering how much this boat in peticular could sell for on the market, and if there is a chance that you can use carving styrofoam as a base, rather than would, and basically complete the whole boat in fiberglass? Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • sorry I meant "wood"

  • i went to shop that making boat with fiberglass.that depend how much fiberglass use for build boat, which cost RM5k above (money ringgit malaysia)

  • Good job of showing how a boat is put togather.

I'm a Boatbuildeer myself. Been repairing Commercial Fishing boats up here in Ilwaco, Wa.foer some time now.

    Best of wishes always,

    Earl

  • where did you download the plans

  • Wow, neat!

  • this is awesome. i was first on a boat when i was 8. it was a boat my grandfather built himself -- a 20' sloop. sailing and fishing have been in me ever since. i'm rather poor, but full of energy and desire to return to the water on a daily basis. and i love building. this helps a lot thanks!

  • actually, u might know the area: my grandfather's boat was docked at Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. In the late 80s my dad worked as a carpenter rebuilding the slips there, too.

  • You bet! I've had a boat slip in Alamitos bay for many years, and have extensively explored the coast from Point Sur to Mexico, including all of the offshore islands.

  • Cool! I'd love to own a sail of my own. I may start with a small skiff for freshwater fishing (love bass). I'll get there some day. Thanks again for the vid!

  • Okay, this vid helped me. I'm with YouthBuild and our instructors are gonna make us build a boat from materials they give us...just hope it flows. Guess i'll head on over to your site.

  • How deep into the sea can this boat go?

  • A dory about this size has crossed the north Atlantic from New York to England. I wouldn't try it with anything smaller than about 27 feet, though. My site has boats from 7' long to 32 feet long - many able to handle the open ocean.

  • oh! good nice lines

  • oh! good

  • I wanna build a boat cause I gotta find myself a new country to live in. Preferably a nice tropical island far away from civilization.

  • kinda reminds me of a st pierre type dory

  • I didn't build this particular hull. It was built by one of my customers who bought the design from me and documented it very well as he built it.

To keep it centered, you temporarily attach it to the strongback jig. That keeps everything lined up.

Standard ABX ply works fine if covering with fiberglass. Birch and mahogany are also fine choices. That one uses 1/2"

Yes, you could fill the spaces between the ribs with foam and deck over it.

    E Glass is fine.

    3/4 ply for the transom

  • Thank you very much for this informative video Sir. Responsible broadcasting. I am definitely at your website right now.

    Regards

  • the video is great... instruction on building a boat is well taught.... i'm glad i found this video, i been wanting to build myself my very own boat. i love the website as well, especially the PLANs.....

  • buenas noches .. señor ... vi su pagina en internet .. felicitaciones... talvez un dia .. compre sus planos y libros .. gracias .. roberto de argentina .. good evenings , sir ... i saw his site in internet . congratulations ... perhaps someday i ll buy his plans and books .. thanks .. roberto from argentina

  • Great Video a very nice and clear explanation. Congratulations ! I think is the best so far placed in You Tube !

  • Very nice work, it gave me some valuable points how to start building my boat. Oh, and it's also appreciated that you spoke so slow and clearly, great for us non-native-speakers. Now, I'm off to your web site to get this ebook. Thank you very much!!

  • This vid has given me boat construction fever

  • Great video, and a great introduction to small boatbuilding. My interest grows and grows, and this video was a major contributor. Thanks for the information, and for making it so appealing. (I'm on my way to your Web site now . . .!)

  • im going to make a boat thanks man

  • hi ii have been lookin for plans to build a plywood seakayak would you know where i can download it? {realy free} thanks for the info

  • JACK!!!!!!!!! Thank you very much for so much information! I'll do mine and I'll let you know!

  • Sir, hdo you have website where we can see full tutorials or guides about this ? that would be great, really

  • Ohhh sorry, hehe was trying to run before walk hehe, now i got your web

  • What did you use to attach the plywood skin to the frame?

  • epoxy glue and either screws or nails.

  • what else can i use besides epoxy.

  • Polyurethane glues (like Gorilla Glue) will work just fine as well.

  • thanks

  • great video, thanks =]

  • was that catalina ilsand behind you?

  • have you made any fishing lobster boats?

  • hey cool vid and website

have u made any boats with sails..

sailboats.. are they a different concept? they need a pretty big keel

but ive always wanted to build a sail boat

  • Sure look at my Grand Banks Dories, the Nova Scotian, Alaskan and Labrador. I have a smaller one too kind of like a Lido 14. E-mail me for details.

  • how big do american yellowtail kingfish grow? in new zealand where i come from i catch 45kg yellow tail... (around 100 pounds) and they give one hell of a fight. nice vid, it helped me alot!

  • The record over here is in the 75 lb (34 kg) range, but that size only live down in Mexican waters, especially at Guadalupe Island. In California they range from 10 to 20 lbs (4-9 kg)and a 40 pounder (18 kg) is considered huge.

  • Does anyone know if Spira International is still in business? They have a lot of boat plans I like. I emailed them on sunday but still never heard from them. I didn't place my order but I asked a question.

  • Yes I am. I do have a day gig though that takes some time. Been in meetings from early AM to late at night for the past couple days. I'll be replying to e-mails this morning (Wednesday.)
