Video is nothing, it doesnt need to read any sectors or engine data. Its just video. For the games, they have to be installed else you'd be riddled with load screens everywhere, and where you do have them, they are significantly longer than consoles loading via DVD
@LoveYoshiClan not many games require installing mate and it doesnt necessarily mean that loading times will be longer than dvd... i have a 360 also and know a few games on it that also have quite long loading times. nintendo initially didnt want to move away from cartridges to disk because they thought loading times would be too long.

All blu rray does is make things darker. Unless they make a movie that actually is made for bluray then it will still be the same as HD except darker.
its not the ps3 GTA4 just sucks graphically all together on its own. GTA4 grapchis are better than other Gtas because they had the same level of a PS1 for christs sake
the downside is that blu ray players are extremely slow where game info is saved onto the ps3 hard drive so it can load faster and also any empty space on the blu ray disc is filled up with copied data so that the laser doesn't have to travel so far

Here is a nice way of breaking down why a game written on a DVD can display a 1080p picture yet a streaming video cannot.
Take a simple website with all the add-ons. Maybe 1-2MB in size. Now do a capture video, using a high quality encoder to maintain the high resolution. Record yourself navigating the website for a few minutes. How big is the video file? 500MB?
The website will be incredibly small, yet when processed by the client computer, becomes full resolution. The video though, HUGE!

Microsoft is planning on releasing an external Blu-Ray drive for the 360. It has been confirmed by a few sources, including Sony themselves. I imagine it would only be used for movies though. This is where it is really needed. The gaming world doesn't really benefit from Blu-Ray except it reduces the need to swap discs mid-game. If 360 developers would start releasing games on Blu-Ray though, they will be alienating just about all of their consumers.

The console itself builds the high resolution images from smaller files, hence the need for a much faster processor than what is in a standalone Blu-Ray player. This is why many people complained about Sony including a Blu-Ray drive in their system. It was not necessary to increase the gaming experience and only really helped movies.

a single layer blu ray is 25GB. a single layer HD-DVD is 15GB. blu ray can currently go up to 100GB and theoreticaly 200GB. HD-DVD currently can only go up to 45GB and theoreticaly 60GB. you do the math
I thought the same thing a year ago, but BluRay has more support. More support form the movie studios, support from the PS3 (which will sell when the price drops) and support from Blockbuster. The format war has barely began but everyone seems to be leaning toward BluRay.

Personally, I'm not 100 percent in love with Sony's attitude. I like companies that present themselves as humble, and Nintendo seems to be the only one thats doing that. Because the Wii wasn't built to impress the eyes. Nintendo figured it was time to spice up the gaming experience...graphics are only half of it, not always everything. I'll take an SNES/Genesis over a modern 360 or PS3 any day. If you buy a system purely off it's graphical prowess, you are going to start running into the same old crap year after year, just prettier.
How does the Wii spice up gaming really? it takes all the skill out of gaming, all you have to do is wave the remote in one direction or another for most games, games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resident Evil 5 will spice gaming up but games like Wii play, Wii sports and Wario Ware are taking us backwards, im not saying the Wii isnt good for the average non gamer but for those of us who remember reading "itchy tasty" all those years ago, the Wii simply doesnt cut it.
Fair enough, but what is going to be so different with MGS4 and RE5 that hasn't been done in video games before? My point is, gaming has pretty much hit a wall. Rarely are things truly different and it seems all majority of gamers want is just a prettier exterior for the same old interior we've been experiences for 15 years. Nintendo at least made an attempt by changing the way one interacts with the game. It's a start at least.
i dont know what to call it but if youve played Gears of War youll know what i mean, its just a far superior game engine to anything on Wii, Wii games are shit all you do is move a remote and you dont have to be dramatic about it like the hired goons on the Nintendo commercials e.g. you can actually swing a golf club with a slight wrist movement you dont actually have to swing it for real, even taking graphics out of it the Wii will not be able to have the type of gameplay that MGS 4 will have
I know 3rd party companies seem to do half-assed usage of the remote, but an actual 1st or 2nd party Nintendo game always seem to do something that gives the game a whole new feel. FPS's are really going to benefit from the remote. The problem with Wii commercials is they pretty much show off the corny mini game type tech demos like Wii Fit, Wii Play and Wii Sports. Yes, you won't have games like Gears of War (which I own), but the everyday games since the past generation just feel dry.

Heard something crazy! 80 percent of PS3 owners don't know they have a Blu-Ray player built-in(Hi-Def/1080p)! Buy a Blu-Ray movie or two. Works on standard definition TV's and looks absolutely stunning on HDTV's!

Because unlike movies, games aren't streamed directly off the disc. Pulling game data off a DVD compared to streaming video is a whole different concept. The console itself builds the high resolution images from smaller files, hence the need for a much faster processor than what is in a standalone Blu-Ray player. This is why many people complained about Sony including a Blu-Ray drive in their system. It was not necessary to increase the gaming experience and only really helped movies.

HD DVD now have more space then Blu-Ray with their triple layer discs. Only by 1GB though... Either way, don't buy to much into Sony's HYPE ;-)
BTW: I played with both and they look the same. HD DVD is the better choice IMO.

Show me a product that sopports it! At the moment Blu-Gay only 20GB more but Toshiba is working at getting 51GB discs in production very soon. Not that it matters much eitherway unless we're talking computer storage purposes or a overload of HD extra features but who watches those? a single layer blu ray is 25GB. a single layer HD-DVD is 15GB. blu ray can currently go up to 100GB and theoreticaly 200GB. HD-DVD currently can only go up to 45GB and theoreticaly 60GB. you do the math

I thought the same thing a year ago, but BluRay has more support. More support form the movie studios, support from the PS3 (which will sell when the price drops) and support from Blockbuster. The format war has barely began but everyone seems to be leaning toward BluRay.

Like Ken Kutaragi said for the launch of the PS3, "it is too CHEAP", and recorded by Wall Street Journal in March that Sony has $2 billions in lossess. Nearly all games made, even the next gen games still cant fit a whole DVD format (Oblivion took up most space but that was only half, and mostly dialogue), so I dont get the whole more information thingy. Blu-ray is expensive, and to add on to that the movies are even too expensive. & this is betamax all over again, except there cds...

Agree, that's a lot. But those 1-5 teraBYTE (did you say bite on purpose? :) discs are like 3-5 years from market, unless the israelis share with someone (intel anyone?)
And it IS an awfully lot of data to waste, if one looses the disc. Ie. don't have the complete CIA-collection on one disc ONLY!! :)

Ebonhawk, I need to make something a little clearer to you. I don't hate Sony, but I do hate their attitude and their business tactics. I'll buy ps3 when it gets down to a more reasonable price(say $249-350). I'm just not paying $500-600 for a media center when all I want to do is play games.:)

Personally, I'm not 100 percent in love with Sony's attitude. I like companies that present themselves as humble, and Nintendo seems to be the only one thats doing that. The prideful attitude that Sony has nowadays makes them look like a bunch of pricks, and I just don't want to support a company like that.

Because the Wii wasn't built to impress the eyes. Nintendo figured it was time to spice up the gaming experience...graphics are only half of it, not always everything. I'll take an SNES/Genesis over a modern 360 or PS3 any day. If you buy a system purely off it's graphical prowess, you are going to start running into the same old crap year after year, just prettier.

How does the Wii spice up gaming really? it takes all the skill out of gaming, all you have to do is wave the remote in one direction or another for most games, games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resident Evil 5 will spice gaming up but games like Wii play, Wii sports and Wario Ware are taking us backwards, im not saying the Wii isnt good for the average non gamer but for those of us who remember reading "itchy tasty" all those years ago, the Wii simply doesnt cut it.

Fair enough, but what is going to be so different with MGS4 and RE5 that hasn't been done in video games before? My point is, gaming has pretty much hit a wall. Rarely are things truly different and it seems all majority of gamers want is just a prettier exterior for the same old interior we've been experiences for 15 years. Nintendo at least made an attempt by changing the way one interacts with the game. It's a start at least.

i dont know what to call it but if youve played Gears of War youll know what i mean, its just a far superior game engine to anything on Wii, Wii games are shit all you do is move a remote and you dont have to be dramatic about it like the hired goons on the Nintendo commercials e.g. you can actually swing a golf club with a slight wrist movement you dont actually have to swing it for real, even taking graphics out of it the Wii will not be able to have the type of gameplay that MGS 4 will have

I know 3rd party companies seem to do half-assed usage of the remote, but an actual 1st or 2nd party Nintendo game always seem to do something that gives the game a whole new feel. FPS's are really going to benefit from the remote. The problem with Wii commercials is they pretty much show off the corny mini game type tech demos like Wii Fit, Wii Play and Wii Sports. Yes, you won't have games like Gears of War (which I own), but the everyday games since the past generation just feel dry.
