  • you had me at "12 thou, feeler gauge." I know those cranked out studs are a problem and a good indication of poor neck set, but, if that is the case, couldn't you replace with longer studs? (that's what she said)

  • Your videos are alright but, your burping at the beginning of them makes you come off like a proper dickhead!

  • Davey, you may be able to tell me... My guitar... As you see in my photo a Gibson SG, I set up mine by getting the strings as low as I can but without fret buzz and I made sure it was dead-on in tune when I play the note on the 12th fret. And If it was not dead-on in tune I just screw the screws back and forth until it was in tune. But I seem also to need blu-tac on the screws as they seem to vibrate... Any thoughts????

  • @Nick80R

I use a spot of crazy glue

or acrylic cement to hold them in place

  • @davey4557 ahhh

  • this was made in 08. you take the first and 5th number

  • Reall Gibsons dont have fret ends sticking out all over the place, they have nubs made from the binding!

  • No excuse for the gooched neck angle on an $1199 guitar. None. Doesn't seem to be marked as a second. Don't know if Gibson does that anymore.

  • Your guitar was made at the

    Bozeman Plant , MA, USA

    September 20th, 2008

    Production Number: 60

  • its called a tailpiece

  • @g11rfe87

    string catcher

  • thanks for the lessons...the check is in the mail!

  • I wish I had figured out I couldn't setup MY guitar.

    RIP 80 dollar dean.

  • Hey Dave.... what happened to the "Elliot Goblett" (Aussie comedian in the 80's), specs man?

    LOL

  • I take it the 2008 under "Made in USA" was it? XD

  • Would it be a good Idea to put medium heavy guage strings on my sg?

  • @tykeesue

    it would be fine

    get the intonation checked

  • Well, not sure about the serial, but to me the bit below it that says 'Made In USA 2008' probably means it's 2008 ;)

  • sorry, Dave...I commented before the entire video played....my bad.....cheers!

  • Dave, that stop tailpiece should not be screwed all the way into the body like that....as far as I know anyway.....please enlighten me, sir...thanks in advance....

  • ahhh Dave have you been hanging with the Urbangrower?

  • Hey Dave..Is it just me or at 4:22 it looks like the neck is seperating from the body?

  • I hear that Dave! On a good note that is what we need you for. Gibson has it's problems like all of them, And now they have to deal with there own leaders trying to put them out of business.

  • 2008 dave! :)

  • did you ask what tuning he played in?

  • their quality has really fallen off, but the prices haven't !!!!

  • Vocal Modem at the beginning? :3

  • Davey wtf with that intro dude ? srsly.

  • Hi Dave, at about 4:10 you talk about the strings touching the bridge...I have a guitar that has a bit of fret buzz (on the low E & A) and even with a setup by the local tech guy it doesn't seem to have improved much, my strings are touching the bridge when they come off the backside of the bridge in between the string catcher and the bridge.I recall the E&A are touching the bridge there...is that what is causing the buzz?

  • @immolateus

    it could be

it could be 1 or 2 high frets

    yuff to say without seeing

  • sweet

  • I think companies have their mail on priority just for that purpose. And when you don't pay on time the bank capitalizes. On another note, I still hate Gibson. I never played a good one yet.

  • just throwing this out there Gibson years in serial number is the 1 and the 5 number

  • Wow.. thats neck was not set in very good, the tailstop and the bridge is way to high and that means that the neck is not what it should be on a Gibson made in America.. but as long as its adjustible i guess its ok.. great vid btw :D

  • Cheers Folks.

  • Just a thought Dave. Since string height and neck relief have an affect on intonation because they relate to the distance the string travels to the neck shouldn't intonation be the very last thing in a set up?

  • @jonahguitarguy

it gets checked over and over as we go to the bitter end

  • @davey4557 Right o, I check you out daily and enjoy your process. I do this same stuff guitar repair and custom building. I had a rotator cuff repair and I'm dead in the water and hate not being able to do anything so you keep it interesting thanks.

  • I would guess 2008

  • I know what ya mean. When I make my Bank Of America payment electronically they hold it as "Payment Pending" for 5 days. It's their way of freezing my credit and creating an artificially induced bigger hard cash on hand ledger column for them those 5 days. They are pissed that as soon as they free up my credit I'm right back on-line buying another gooched China guitar.

I wouldn't piss on a Gibson if it was on fire. I'll never contribute to its CEO's and CFO's bonuses.

  • Hi Dave

Am I correct in thinking the neck needs to be angled back away from the body of the guitar further?

  • says made in usa 2008 right below the serial number!

  • @WhenSummersGone2 Yea, that was funny. That's something I would do. It's like looking for the remote when it's in your hand.

  • @WhenSummersGone2

    I was joking :)

  • With everything you see hear and read about Gibson, how they actually sell guitars at the prices they ask is the amazing thing. I give them huge credit for this marketing genius. bleh

  • I would never take a chance on a Gibson ever, having seen these videos...any company with no QC will go bust...expect someone in China to buy Gibson and chuck out more rubbish...

  • I put the strings in the pickup side of the tail-stop. That way I can put the tail-stop on to the body. It seems to not have as much string braking at the ball. But that's just me

  • FIRST AND FORTH NUMBER ITS A 2008

  • SGs set angle varies +/- a degree, and always have. Gibson has never had "quality control" - the good ones turn into high-priced "vintage" axes everyone wants and the bad ones wind up in pawn shops or under somebody's bed. BTW that tailpiece could be cranked down -no prob.. but that bridge is wack. It is installed backwards but so was mine right from the factory.

  • first and fifth number, it's an 08

  • @davey4557 Isn't the tune-o-matic suppose to have the saddles screws facing the pickups. Also if you put the strings in from the inner side of the stop tail then wrap around the top(like the original Jrs) it should be able to be lowered.I had to do to an 2004,but wasn't as high as that one.

  • @mattallica464

    it can be either way

    no set rule

  • Geeeeeze guys the build date thing was a joke. Where is your sense of humor. This guy is hilarious. Great vid Dave!

  • @oldfatguyrr1

    you got it

    lol

  • @davey4557 what's your honest opinion of gibson? i've never been a fan... would be cool if someone brought in a chinese "gibson" so you could compare. :)

  • @davey4557 Would you ever consider taking on an apprentice?

  • I HATE set-neck guitars. Bolt-ons FTW as far as I'm concerned.

  • I have the same exact guitar, SG standard with binding. Plays like butter... however Gibson actually nicked the binding in a few places when filing/finishing the frets. It's so obvious, I'm not sure how it made it past QA and into the store. I got a couple hundred off for the mistake, but still on a $1000+ guitar.... silly

  • Hey Dave, how do you feel about Zager guitars? A lot of people rave about them, but I wanted to hear your input about them.

  • typical gibson....Fender has better quality control by far,i am sure there are other companies too that try harder to produce something decent

  • @TheZebra555 prs are like gibson and fender combined they are the best guitars you can get from my point of view though i don't any of those guitars cause i'm always broke

  • @narutosaenz I love PRS's, a good one you should watch for that is less expensive and considered a multi tool tone monster is the Swamp Ash Special. They are simply amazing, I own a Standard 24 from about 99' thats amazing and the SAS tones KILLS it. I own SG's, Les Pauls, Parkers, and Fender Stratocasters which my 89' Strat is just a monster and my 07' is pretty wicked with Texas specials but the SAS surprises me everytime I plug it in. Just a really well thought out and built guitar.

  • doesnt it say..made in the usa 2008 on back of the headstock?

  • @TheZebra555 This guy's a total dick. That's the only reason I've subbed!

  • @TheZebra555 at 2:23 he's looking right at 2008.

  • @69schil hahaha i think he might have been stoned

  • Heh, it was Sept. 19 - 2008 was a leap year...

  • reverse wrap the strings around the stop piece.

  • I recently bought an SG faded from a guy, its almost 10 years old but I got a for a decent price and I gotta say your right about Gibson's quality control. I played others, same exact model and each one was different. If your gonna buy a Gibson, don't order it without playing it, I learned that from your vids and it ended up getting me a sweet deal on a great instrument. Cheers!

  • @SkateoverSchool247 IMO only a noob would buy any instrument without playing it. Pro players' best friends are the little shops run by players where every guitar is set up before it goes out the door. You might pay more - but you'll spend less overall.

  • @moucon yeah i'm happier with my older bass, was bought from a non-chain store ran by an actual luthier. second bass i bought was from a big chain store and i had a fair bit of shit with both it AND its replacement.

  • @moucon "Noobs" don't recognize that there can be a difference in the way two guitars of the exact same model play and sound. It's never pointed out all that much but it's essential to play an instrument before you buy it. Its obvious to anyone who's played for a number of years but its the best advice you can, and should give a "noob" if they're looking into buying an instrument. Oh and another helpful tip, Guitar Center = GTFO

  • @SkateoverSchool247 Hey, Guitar Center really isn't all that bad. Yeah, it spawns idiots who think they're good when they're not, but it's actually a perfectly fine store. I like my local GC because they carry a LOT more gear than any of the local music stores.

  • Good Vid.

  • It's my guitar's identical twin! September 2008. A couple years younger than mine. That tailpiece issue is a funky one. Mine is sitting almost flush with the body. Cheers!

  • I get that it was buit on Sept. 20, 2008 if I read the serail number, and Gibson's instructions correctly.

  • Bring on the trolls! Stand strong Dave!
