Just a follow up in reference to the jimping- Nutnfancy's absolutely right about the polishing, however everyone should also be made aware that when buying a knife with a coating of any kind, the texture and friction increases. It isn't detrimental to the blade, especially since the grind on a blade creates "teeth" which cause friction anyway and the coating counter-balances that, but on a polished part such as the jimping on the Aegis, it matters.
I can officially say Im growing up I made a purchase without seeing an in depth review about it on your page. I play with the knife look it up on the internet and of course you have done a review...I swear I didn't watch it before I bought it. I love my new Sog Aegis
Just an FYI on this knife, I broke mine. The plastic handle cracked in two places, and the lock eventually started failing me (due to the cracks in the handle). I am sending it back to SOG.
I was carving wood. I returned it to Amazon and they replaced it. However, the new model they sent me had a very loose lockup and the handles did not align properly. I guess I just had bad luck with this knife. I love the lightweight and blade shape, but I ended up going with the Spyderco FFG Endura 4. good luck.
The corners of a spyderco sharpmaker stone can be used to sharpen up jimping for more traction very easily and the will give a nicer more uniform finish than a dremel.
im digging the spyderco jimping on the tenacious way better than the sog jimping on the aegis. i think it had to do with the wider trough pattern spyderco uses.
My wife and I love all your videos, and we appreciate your time and effort, and for your service to our country. After watching a total of 24 minutes of this knife, I was waiting for you to get to the "safety tab", and how it works. You never did. I own a SOG pocket folding knife 3" blade. Had it for over 15 years, perfect and razor sharp still. Thanks Nutn, you're awesome.
I was going to say it was because it was poliched Nutn.Just because I see Khukuri House videos of them polishing the knives and how they lose some temper.Figured if it had jimping it would be buffed out slowly.
thanks for the great reviews, just got this version of the aegis the other day largely due to yours and cutlerylovers reviews on them. love the knife! love it for the weight, the low ride in the pocket, actually put a pull on the clip to facilitate getting it out, as it doesnt leave any knife to grab stickin up. most of all that blade shape is just a total winner, would probubly go for that alone no matter even if the handle were laminated popsicle sticks. lol no maybe not , love it
my aegis arrived the other day and i am not thrilled with it at all.. but i am gonna mess with it for a while and make a few modifications. hopefully it will grow on me.
recon- nice thing about the aegis is that it's relatively cheap. get'm both! you can get that black tini serrated blade tanto aegis (not digi camo though) at Walmart for less than $70.
@ForceRecon198 -i think the tanto aegis looks cooler as well (it also looks like it has more jimping and a reinforced tip) but i my experience, they're not as functional in every day use. i have several tantos but i never carry them anymore because a plain, fat bellied blade seems a lot more usefull. the tanto is probably a better tactical choice though but i don't have first hand experience with that.
@yz9890 Oh okay then. I was going for a better utility knife, not so much for a tactical purpose (though it is a knife, you can still beat some ass with it, god forbid you have to) so I'll go for the one with the belly. Thanks for the input, it was a hard choice for me to make not being a knife guru. :D
@ForceRecon198 tanto will be harder to sharpen since you have serrated plus two edges. but if you are skilled in sharpening, the tanto is stronger as the featured blade has a weak tip.
@eradimatrix Well, I'm not great at sharpening so I'm glad I went with the featured version. I'm getting a Ka-BAR in a bit to add to my collection so I suppose I'll have greater diversity among knives that way.
@RoyalAlba1 I've carried this knife for almost a year. I can tell you that there is nothing this knife wont do. It's the perfect shape and lenght for edc. It's light as a feather despite the fact that it's wide. I forget I have it on me. The down sides are that it's aus 8 which I find dull's somewhat easily. Also, don't be suprised if you experience a bit of blade play which is the consequence of the "assisted design."
@Kopis1911 When you say blade play can you be more specific for me? I just bought this knife and if i had to use it for self defense, I don't want it failing on me.
@Luigi110067 it wont fail on you. blade play can be fixed with an allen wrench. mine only started having blade play after a couple months of use. and it was gone in a minute after adjusting it.
@eradimatrix Cant say the same for mine. I use it for work and it needs to resharpened every time I get back. I have had similar experiences with other aus8 blades like the cold steel ak47.
I recently purchased the SOG Aegis with the black TiNi finish and the black zytel handle. I like it that it that the blade and handle colors match, call me obsessive compulsive. The other configurations are nice, though. It would have been nice to see SOG offer different color handles aside from just black and camo, but I suppose they might not sell too well. Either way, it's a great EDC pocket knife, I needed something that easily fit in my pocket since I refuse to carry in my purse.
I don't like the bright Satin finish blade for defense. I kinda have a set of mind that if you whip that out and the robber or murder or what ever he/she is trying to do, If you whip that out...they might do the same. I just prefer the black for defense, easier to hind. I want my blade to be a surprise to the enemy.
i am not worrying too much on the jimping design. when go tactical (i did once lately through my roadblock duty), all it took was one cutting and one stabbing. If you are going for a lengthy 'knife fight' then it's another thing. good detailed vid anyway. tks.
Hahahaha, well i have a funny story with this, im 13 years old, i gave my mother my knife to put away when my brother had a friend over, for the next couple weeks it was never found, she gave me her credit card to order a new one, i chose the SOG Aegis, i pressed confirm order and i heard her yelll, almost exactly 2 seconds after i ordered it she yelled! dont do it! I found it!!! I now get another new knife out of it :)
@crazykar3 This is completely unrelated to your story, but good job kid. It's nice to see someone your age so responsible with something like a knife, I'm very impressed. Oh, and even though your comment is 4 months old, congrats on your new knife lol.
@maxrocks19 I To am 13 and i have a knife and i see where you are coming from but just because we have knifes doesn't mean were thugs who intend to mug people. I have a knife because not only cause it looks good but it is extremely helpful with day to day tasks.
@FunMultiGuy i'm not thinking that your some kind of thug, i'm 17 and i carry everyday, i'm just saying that a $70 knife seems a little expensive for a 13 years old.
@maxrocks19 The same reason adults buy $150 knives or more expensive? I would rather spend my money on something that will last a few years and something that has some cool factor for me. Age shouldn't matter what type of knive you get, as long as it's perfect for you and will last you a while
to me, i feel like the jimping is "backwards". if you look closely at it, the jimping is slightly angled forward and it grips better when you push your thumb against the forward sweep, even on the satin finish. sog should consider sweeping that angled jimping back and even if they're polished, they'll still grip well
i have done a review on this blade but in my personal use my digicam ageis had the sog logo rubbler inserts come out due to pocket wear. thats just my two cents other than that i noticed a little blade play but nothing major but for the price it should not be noticeable.
Totally correct on the reasoning with the gymping grip. Black Oxide or TiNi coating need to go through rough, better molecular profile for color. If sent in "polished", finish comes off in streaks or spots. Would you give me an e-mail address so I can send some pics for you to check out for possible evaluations? Big fan, Dave at SOG. By the way, I do all of the repair and warranty work there, I see all of the defects and reasons for each of the knives-pretty spot on. DD
I just got my SOG Aegis from my local Wal-Mart, and I got the Satin Finish one. I have to disagree with what you said about the jimping, the jimping on mine is really sharp, it locks in very well, I stabbed into a newspaper and my thumb went nowhere. It might just be the difference in individual knives, I dunno.
I have to disagree with the "intimidation factor." The only time a bad guy should know you have a blade is when it penetrates his body. Until then, keep that thing hidden. Just my $0.02
nutnfancy's philosophy is he'd rather run then fight. He packs atleast 3-4 knives as well as a pistol on him but he'd rather run rather then try to place himself in harm. So the whole deal with the bright blade he's trying to say is in some dark starry night he'd rather have that blade gleaming so that the attacker might not even consider it worth the risk and run away. It's just the way his philosophy is :)
I looked at the SOG flash II several years ago when I wasn't as savvy on knives and I thought it was awesome. Then lastyear, I almostbought one, but the salesman recommended a Kershaw blur. Finally, I picked up one at LOWES of all places for $45 and thought I was getting a deal. turns out, I'm not very impressed with the SOG at all. It feels cheap, now it looks cheap to me, and I really hate the pocket clip. I've has it for 6 months and it has been in my pocket 1 time.
EVERYONE! Before you go out and buy this knife............I bought this knife and noticed a little play and wobble in the blade in the locked position. When i applied pressure, IT FOLDED ON ME!!!! Yes, and looks like im not the only one with this problem. Needless to say, that knife was returned and has turned me off to SOG :( Just thought u guys might like to know.
I picked up the SOG Aegis a week ago, and have already traded it off! Should have shot a video before letting it go. I was easily (with my hands) able to defeat the lock with about 10 pounds of pressure on the back of the blade (I am not exaggerating here! What does this mean to the knife user? Forget it for EDC, except for opening boxes or carving up your favorite steak. Use the Aegis in any kind of of combat encounter and it will close on your fingers if bumped on the blade back!
The main flaw of all of SOG's plastic handled knives is that they are pure plastic and the locking mechanism is very light and puny. A little pressure on the back of the blade and you can see the blade begin to separate from the blade stop. Compare with a Benchmade Griptilian - rock solid at a lower price! SOG comes very close to Chinese "throwaway knives" in pure lack of build quality. They are still relying on a name built on their fixed blade line. They have most buyers nicely snowed!
Did it dawn on you that it might be knife-specific... instead of model-specific? Did you try to get it repaired? My Aegis doesn't have the same problem. The lock is rock solid.
At over an ounce lighter than my Kershaw OSO Sweet, this is rapidly becoming my EDC knife. It's gorgeous...
I made my decision, and i am going to start carrying an EDC knife. This is the one i want, i just have to decide if i get the black or the natural finish. And the only reason i am in doubt is... how durable is that black finish in the blade? does it start to fall off the blade? or it is the natural color of the steel?
do you have to have any extra care when sharpening a knife like the black aegis? i mean for not to scratch the finish?
It really depends on what the black finish is made of, I've had some black finished knives like my Ka-Bar tanto, that lost its finish where it rubbed on the sheath just after a couple of draws, and then I've had some with a black finish that I've had for years and the finish still looks brand new. When it comes to sharpening, if your careful and dont drag the finish across the stone you should be fine, it wont make sharpening any more difficult. I hope this helps you with your decision
As long as you dont go and try to baton through a log you should be fine, standard EDC tasks shouldent mar up the finish to bad. and if it dose, the knife will still function fine.
Nice Review, I picked one up today, just so that I can test it. My impression of SOG's plastic handled folders has always been - FLIMSY! Lock up is wobbly, up and down and side-to-side. I wish it wasn't, because I like the design of this folder, the blade shape, the deep carry (even though you can't get it out in a hurry as a result). Dollar for dollar, the build, fit and finish of a Benchmade always blows SOG's away. Too bad, really. Wish it weren't so...
love the video's. Thanks. The one thing I will note about the Sog Aegis is that I had to really give that pocket clip a bend so that I could use it. It was crazy tight and couldn't use it at all until it was modified. Now it's great. Anyone else had to do this?
Man, you gassed on about jimping, finish, and color. Users of this knife will notice that like all SOG plastic handled knives, it is quite flimsy. Side-to-side flexion is scary with fairly little pressure. Also, downward pressure on the back of the blade begins to displace flex and displace the locking mechanism. If you must buy a SOG folder get one that is aluminum handled, as the rigidity keeps the blade lock from being defeated.
If you guys are such experts go make your own videos... What's the point of telling someone that they over emphasized something, just don't watch the video, calm down. Nice job Nutnfancy.
yeah man!!! find it on google, is where i had to look. just about nowhere carries it anymore. its a great knife! its not too big, nor too small... and it keeps its edge very well!!! highly recommend the T2
HAHA! yeah!!! i know exactly what you mean!!! what i did is every pay check i took out 20 dollars and set it aside in a jar in my bathroom and forgot about it... didn't take all that long.
You shuoud have a TV show on the Outdoor Channel doing nothing but product reviews. If not that, you should still have your own TV show on the Outdoor Channel.
Great points, I have noticed this with different knives i have owned too. one that stands out is my rat 7 in D2 compared to the 1095. The 1095 is parkerized and offers great grip on jimping where the D2's coating is a little slick. Just something to take note on. This has been my observation with many mfg. Jet over and out
If you were pronouncing things wrong alot Nutn I'd be ragging you about it. Aegis is pronounced ee-jis, just like on the SOG website. Just because someone says it a different way doesn't make it right. Thanks for the point on the jimping, I'm totally not gonna get the satin finish. Peace
Just a thought, but it is possible that the jimping was cut slightly deeper/wider (I'm talking thousandths here) to accommodate the plating on the flat finish blade. If this is the case you have to consider the possibility that it is still slightly more "user friendly" due to size. The question I keep asking myself is why the jimping was not made directional the opposite direction??!?! It would make more sense to me, but then again -I don't do this professionally. Thanks for another great vid!
I like jimping..i like my thumb to stay in place. The digi camo/black blade looks WAY better then the satin finish..i'm so goin to get one of these oneday. ;] -Jonny
Thanks for the update, I love your vids. I personally don't like jimping and if I had the choice I would either leave it polished or buy a knife that doesn't have it but that's just me. Thanks again and keep'm coming!
they changed the gimping, its like a saw, the most aggressive i have ever seen. its like thumb spikes.

Honestly, the blade itself is beautiful. Whether it be the satin finish or the desert digital, they're both beautiful.
Jemery007 2 years ago
I have to disagree with the "intimidation factor." The only time a bad guy should know you have a blade is when it penetrates his body. Until then, keep that thing hidden. Just my $0.02

i agree. if some1 who is trying to attac u see's u with ur blade they could snap and stab or shoot u just in response to ur knife

nutnfancy's philosophy is he'd rather run then fight.

In the first video, nutnfancy did say that he needed to tighten the pivot screw out-of-the-box to get a tight lock-up
bush0165 2 years ago

They have most buyers nicely snowed!
fiveform 2 years ago
Did it dawn on you that it might be knife-specific... instead of model-specific? Did you try to get it repaired? My Aegis doesn't have the same problem. The lock is rock solid.
At over an ounce lighter than my Kershaw OSO Sweet, this is rapidly becoming my EDC knife. It's gorgeous...

Hi Nutnfancy and guys!
I made my decision, and i am going to start carrying an EDC knife. This is the one i want, i just have to decide if i get the black or the natural finish. And the only reason i am in doubt is... how durable is that black finish in the blade? does it start to fall off the blade? or it is the natural color of the steel?
do you have to have any extra care when sharpening a knife like the black aegis? i mean for not to scratch the finish?
kauxkaux 2 years ago
It really depends on what the black finish is made of, I've had some black finished knives like my Ka-Bar tanto, that lost its finish where it rubbed on the sheath just after a couple of draws, and then I've had some with a black finish that I've had for years and the finish still looks brand new. When it comes to sharpening, if your careful and dont drag the finish across the stone you should be fine, it wont make sharpening any more difficult. I hope this helps you with your decision

How do you think this particular sog will do?
kauxkaux 2 years ago
As long as you dont go and try to baton through a log you should be fine, standard EDC tasks shouldent mar up the finish to bad. and if it dose, the knife will still function fine.
danngree 2 years ago
I orderd one in a black finish today, ill EDC it for a while and tell you how it holds up, that is if you havent already orderd one yourself.

Wish it weren't so...
fiveform 2 years ago
love the video's. Thanks. The one thing I will note about the Sog Aegis is that I had to really give that pocket clip a bend so that I could use it. It was crazy tight and couldn't use it at all until it was modified. Now it's great. Anyone else had to do this?

FWIW, ycs has delayed shipments to feb 28th and they raised the price to around $72
tosomedegree 3 years ago
Man, you gassed on about jimping, finish, and color. Users of this knife will notice that like all SOG plastic handled knives, it is quite flimsy. Side-to-side flexion is scary with fairly little pressure. Also, downward pressure on the back of the blade begins to displace flex and displace the locking mechanism. If you must buy a SOG folder get one that is aluminum handled, as the rigidity keeps the blade lock from being defeated.
fiveform 3 years ago
That's true, they seem fragile, have play, don't give you confidence.
Flash feels a little better than Aegis though.
Plastic handle sucks.

If you guys are such experts go make your own videos... What's the point of telling someone that they over emphasized something, just don't watch the video, calm down. Nice job Nutnfancy.
DbombUnleashed 3 years ago
I happen to have the Aegis and i told what i think, it's not a good knife but it's cheap, that's all.
And i did make a video.

I stand corrected, at least someone did something for once, instead of doing nothing, then annoying the person who tryed to help.

Does the Aegis black TiNi finsh wear off?
I have a Benchmade Mel Pardue 3550 that has worn off, and it looks bad.

Bummer about the jimping, as I have that version waiting for me back home. :(
I think I'll make do though. Probably end up filing them sharp if it bugs me enough.
Anywho, keep up the good work.

Jet over and out
jetfuel545 3 years ago
about the smoother thumbrest
just grind in between the grooves with some sandpaper and the thumbrest will be sharp again (good point though!)
gimepepe 3 years ago
My satin Aegis has a lot of vertical play, the clip is too tigh and has a bad design, the lock doesn't feel strong, the blade is offset when closed.
Flash II is much, much better.
holdenccc 3 years ago
If you were pronouncing things wrong alot Nutn I'd be ragging you about it. Aegis is pronounced ee-jis, just like on the SOG website. Just because someone says it a different way doesn't make it right. Thanks for the point on the jimping, I'm totally not gonna get the satin finish. Peace
GoDJuNkeR 3 years ago
Just a thought, but it is possible that the jimping was cut slightly deeper/wider (I'm talking thousandths here) to accommodate the plating on the flat finish blade. If this is the case you have to consider the possibility that it is still slightly more "user friendly" due to size. The question I keep asking myself is why the jimping was not made directional the opposite direction??!?! It would make more sense to me, but then again -I don't do this professionally. Thanks for another great vid!
cavie187 3 years ago
this new vid has changed my mind , instead im definitly getting the tini rather than the satin blade even if it cost more , cheers

Thanks for the update, I love your vids. I personally don't like jimping and if I had the choice I would either leave it polished or buy a knife that doesn't have it but that's just me. Thanks again and keep'm coming!
