All the comments on here arguing newfie heritage really befuddles me. 90% by chance are hardly from the east coast, let alone newfoundland, that i would bet my last doller on, where you get the nerves to start the argument will forever be beyond me without a doubt. Try enjoying the song and sing along, make better use of your short time here on earth.
Looking for a Canadian flk song.. the story is about a man that puts his wife and child/children in the canoe to save them while Iroquois Indians are coming to get him..
Anybody, please?? I only know a translation in another language..
They actually are really fantastic in their live videos, or whoever is recording them does a much better job than average. I never watch live videos for songs on youtube, except for from great big sea. I like Gideon Brown and this one best in their live videos.
These guys are Sooo much better live. The energy they have just can't come across on a regular album song. I recommend seeing GBS live to anyone. It's such a great time.
In Scotland a group called the McCalmans recorded this in 1969 with Aly Bain guesting on fiddle BUT the called it "THE BALENA" this version comes close to the McCalmans version
@Astrotastic12 Acutallly, Newfoundland is part of the "Atlantic Provinces" not the Maritimes. Common mistake made by many. The 3 Maritime provinces have their own unique history, culture and part in forming Canada. Just like Newfoundland's unique history and culture as their own country and then joining Canada in 49. Apart from that though, Newfoundland is also seperated from the Maritimes by the Gulf of St. Lawrence physically.
they are not from the maritimes, there from Newfoundland, not quite the same but close, i actually came from the same town as Sean McCann.. Carbonear!, even my last name is from there...Sutton
@AtharAqua i`ve seen Runrig and GBS in 2007 in Drumnadrochid/Loch Ness, one of my best Days ever! The Oysterband comes at 9.12.this Year to Germany i`ll be there!
ahh the old polina , me and a couple of my friends sang this at the talent show for our senior buddies way back in sixth grade. Obviously our version was far superior to GBS's! haha
my teacher loves this song

I was under the impression that McCann came from Gull Island.
knightorder 2 years ago
In one video they say he's from Gull Isand, and in the next they say he's from Carbonear.
They also sometimes say they'e from Atlanta, Canada and other times they say they're from St. Johns.
Where ever they're from, they're totally awesome!
faxdaddy 2 years ago
Can't argue with that!

there from ATLANTIC Canada and St.Johns is in Atlantic Canda. you tool

Sean's family are all Gull Islanders and he was reared up there, but he was born in Carbonear.
