The trick to being able to fight Doom Gaze is to realize that it isn't a random battle in the usual sense of the word. Every time you take off in the airship Doom Gaze has a fixed location on the world map he is hiding in. To get into a fight with Doom Gaze all you need to do is find that location and get close enough to it to trigger a battle. continue to read down...

Hence, if you're ready to fight, flying around in circles is pointless and wandering around aimlessly may not work too well either. From when you take off, tilt your ship to the right at a very slight angle, then hold L+R to go full steam ahead. You'll move across the map at a slight angle and cover every location until you run into Doom Gaze.

Can't you just kill him with a Fenix Down the way you can with the Phantom Drain and other undead enemies?

oh nvm, i beat him - what i did was i didn't bother to revive terra with celes when she gets doom'd at the first of the fight, then i cast ultima with celes, bum rush with sabin, and fire 3 with edgar never stopping to heal, until he died. *victory dance* :D

@shrint He doesn't regain his health when he escapes, you're supposed to keep fighting him until he escapes, then go find him again and repeat until dead, haha.

arg, i finally came across him, and i immediately saved the game state at the first of the battle, but every time i try to kill him he escapes before i can finish the job. i hit him with:

sabin - bum rush

terra - scimitar w/ offering & gauntlet relics, in morph mode

edgar - fire 3 (that's his weakness right?)

celes - atma weapon (also use her to cast life & heal)

which seems to be doing damage to him about as fast as the setup you used, but instead of dying he escapes. *frustration* -__-

@MrMuzzy157 He's using the Offering (gives a person 4 hits), and the Genji Glove (allowing a weapon in each hand, giving a total of 8 hits).

Hehe I beat Doom Gaze with just Shadow and some curing from Terra. I just keep throwing Flame Sabres and casting haste on Shadow so he can throw them faster, Doom Gaze went down in seconds.

And from a guy who has beaten the game and taken out 6 of the 8 dragons in Dragon's Den before accidentally deleting his file, that place is still incredibly hard. @-@ I just avoided all of the fights until the boss.

But yeah, World of Ruins is training heavy.

Where do you find Locke? I know its a cave or something... and i think i messed up at the floating coninet because it wont let me get shadow back at the colluseum....help?

@KINGKICK612 If you didn't wait on the Floating Continent until 0:05 remain, then Shadow's dead.

And Locke is in this place called Phoenix Cave. It's like in the middle of the south half of the map or something. There's a giant star-shaped mountain range. You just have to land the airship in the gap in the middle of it.

well....to put it literally:

The Overworld map is constructed out of aprroximately 4,900 "spaces". Doom Gaze resides in just ONE of those spaces. If your airship crosses over the spot he occupies - you will fight him. If he survives the encounter, he will move on to possess another random space.

This is why it takes most people ages to find him.

yeahh he's random as it gets...in theory you may never meet him, but It only took me about three hours or so today to meet him and kill him in three separate encounters. Just loop your airship to cover as much space as you can...not sure, but I seem to run into him more in the center of the map, thereabouts...

Not really, its always been luck on my part to meet him. I can't say I know anything that helps.

@xnarutoxhokage I know this comments is old but it may help out people;

Land your ship, and get up on it again, turn your Airship SLIGHTLY to the right abit, and just keep the go-forward key pressed down, it may take a while but that way you'll go across all the Overworld and finally, find him.

I'm quite confident your problem is that you have mog with the Moogle Charm, this repels enemies, even this one. 10 hours and no battle? yeah thats probably your problem.
