Griefing. Because assholes exist. :D But seriously since the dawn of man there have been assholes who pick on others. (Cain n Abel?) And while this is a part of nature, in the videogame world such a thing can be controlled. Since there are a vast number of folks who like to enjoy games without bully bill coming along and destroying their fun, it makes perfect sense to me to accomodate that community. Hence why WoW and other major MMO's have PVP and PVE servers. We likes variety. :D

It doesn't matter if they try to prevent griefing. The people who really want to go ahead and grief are just going to make new accounts that have never played GOW 1/2 so they can get into those casual channels. It's kind of like how back in Halo 3, they had "bootcamp" where the low level players only could get in but anyone who made a new account, could get in and dominate regardless. The preventative measures are going to help a little, but not like they want.

One of the biggest things i miss about Counter Strike, Quake3, and UT was the Griefing. I know as a player I would not have strived half as much to own had i not been griefed severely as a n00b. I just builds character.

Gear of War is fps like (third person, but still). So I think that a good idea, let the player have somewhere to start learning how multiplayer is really played. On an rts or anything else, it would be mostly useless, but any shooting game, it worth the effort for the casual player at least.

How shall those casual channels help in any way? I mean, yeah, they can play with aim assist, but after they did it with the assist and want to play with all the others, they have to start learning to play the game in the normal way which is something entirely different.

Taking action against greifers, is simply a smart move on any developers part. The gaming communities that form up around a game are a big part of it in later stages and the douchbaggery that goes on often limits the amounts of new players to those who can deal with it and often drives off veteran players (of course it tends to be the good helpful ones who leave).

I think trying to prevent "griefing" in multiplayer is kind of silly. People who truly want to get their jollies off by screwing with other people in a game will find a way around any restrictions you place on them. This one is as simple as making a new profile and spending 8 bucks for a month of XBL for it. Honestly if you're playing GoW online, you're probably not a "casual" player anyway, the whole thing just seems like a wasted effort to me =\

Dividing the playerbase is always a bad thing and there are people out there that will either make a new live account or buy a 2nd copy of the game or make a new live account before they play multiplayer, just to get to those casual channels. A ladder and matchmaking service is the best option, it's not fool-proof and can and usually does fail at times but let's be honest, griefing will always exist, whether you put 'new' / casual / bad players in with old or not.

The casual channel is a good idea, there are a lot of Gears players that are amazing at the game and if I was a new player and had to go against them I would be discouraged and my stop playing so being able to play against people around your skill level is a great idea. It's definitely more important for the Gears franchise compared to say CoD, Halo and BF.

personally i think its smart that they made a casual section and a more experienced section. because if your not good at shooters (like myself) gears of war is extremely hard to get into. like I was trying to play the beta for GOW3 and it was extremely difficult to try and play with way more experienced people. personally i think all competitive shooters need an option like that.
