  • What???? 89 degrees and no mention of global warming? What were they thinking?

  • 1987, beginning of the Big Awakening of Mankind ... 2012 is supposed to signify another milepost in this awakening...Ollie North, Iran-Contra ... Was the first time I hated television tho I grew up with it since1966.

  • Its Wimbledon not Wimbleton!!

  • I like the statue of liberty animations, they shouldn't have gotten rid of that

  • In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:05, It Was WKYC-TV's Channel 3 News' A.M. Cleveland Video ID From Summer 1987.

  • God, I miss those Statue of Liberty animations, opening and closing every NBC News program, even NBC Nightly News.

I was four years old when these NBC News opens and closes came out, and the long-standing John Williams theme to put the icing on that cake.

I wish all network news organizations had those dignified news animations and themes. FOX News needs that set like REALLY BAD!!!!

  • before that they used Beethoven's 5th.

  • still great they use this theme

  • Reagan was nothing but the puppet of the teleprompter. And he couldn't even remember anything in iran contra hearings. Uh huh, great president my butt. Soft spoken and good at making speeches but not smart enough about economics, world affairs, and social concerns.

  • And the idiot we have now ain't any better. C'mon, he had a teleprompter to talk to sixth graders in Maryland. The only difference between this stooge and Reagan is at least Reagan cut taxes. The stooge wants to tax everything in sight.

  • One thing I will give credit in the 80's is at least the news still had some kind of journalistic integrity back then. Now ALL the news is driven by either right wing radical of liberal extremists. It is gross.

  • 80's glory days? Yeah right, focused on ourselves spending massively while cutting taxes and shafting us all in the butt for the future with massive spending deficits in Washington which if we are lucky will take decades to pay back. Not to mention the 80's were an incredibly pretentious, mean, money driven, and materialistic plastic period of time. Not all was bad. But the fantasy land of the 80's was not some glory time for the united states.

  • The 80's were the glory days of television and everything else..

  • Pat Cash won Wimbledon! (Or Wimbleton, as Garrick pronounced it.)

  • 1980's Superpower Supreme!!! Such a different world then! Regan era drawing to an end. Love the Statue Of Liberty graphic. (if you could call it that back then!)

  • credit michael collins for the statue of liberty, it's a 3D version tha was made by hand.

  • sweet!

  • nice.

  • For those of you who live outside of the Northeast Ohio area, the host of AM Cleveland in the promo is Scott Newell, who still reports for WKYC Channel 3 today.

  • Great theme, and amazing network theme graphics for the 1980s!

  • the statue of liberty in the open was made by michael collins

  • This clip was lucky to even make air on its original air date. It was the summer of 1987, and NBC's broadcast technicians were on strike.

Management and -ahem- temps filled in.

  • that strike was the beginning of the end for nabet @ nbc.

g.e. got what it wanted-daily hires!

  • If you're interested in seeing full news stories (from throughout the years), you can check out Vanderbilt's tv news archive ( h t t p : / / w. w. w. tvnews . vanderbilt. edu). Although, you sound like a news buff already (you probably already know about this). :)

  • i mean uses* lol

  • Thats brilliant! I live in Melbourne, Australia, our Seven Network used a techno spiced up version but they used the origional durning the mid-90s, just a brilliant peice...

I love america by the way, if i ever live there i reckon i'll watch NBC just cause it sounds like being just at home lol!

  • Wow, that news set looks like somebody's living room.

    Still a fantastic theme.

  • Garrick Utley now does short pieces for National Public Radio.

  • You know what annoys me? The newer version of The Mission! I loved the original version used in this clip. That lasted from 1985 until the early 2000s.

  • Does our version of the mission annoy you, click 'Seven news opener 2000' and see

  • I could not stand Garrick Utley. I was so annoyed by him, but whatever happened to him?

  • He worked at CNN until 2003.
