The sheer genius of Bernard Herrmann's music is that for the Main Credit, the final chord does not resolve, drawing the viewer into the episode; for the End Credit, the final chord does resolve, providing the aural statement of finality.

When Serling wrote the original opening narration, he had, "There is a sixth dimension..." whereupon someone said that they thought there were only four (three of space, one of time), whereupon they called the physics department at UCLA to ask. Extraordinary.

@AJNorth To me the ending theme has always not given ANY finality. It continues the feeling of mystery that opened the episode, and along with Rod's closing narratives, give me the feeling of "that's the mystery as it stands, what you've seen here, and it may never be resolved", like it's giving you something to think about and mull over for the rest of your life! LOL And indeed I have with some episodes, even though I saw them when I was only around 10....

@tall32guy You may be referring to the music used in later seasons by Marius Constant (the far more recognizable & well-known theme); in syndication, it was often spliced onto episodes that originally had Herrmann's brilliant Main & End Credit music. Do a search for "TV Ad Series 1959 Ford (Twilight Zone)" (at YouTube); between the commercials is an End Credit with Herrmann's music. It would be hard for me to imagine that, after hearing it, you still did not perceive a sense of finality.

Urnkneekovaks, you are correct...but the geniuses of dramatic, science fiction, and comedy writing for early TV like Paddy Chayefsky, Rodman Edward Serling and Ernie Kovacs are all gone now. TV just rehashes the same themes/stories over and over again in a newer looking package (like "reality shows"), and after one season, most of them go off the air anyway. We won't see those early days again.

Wazzup Guys..I'm 25 years old, and I gotta say The twilight Zone is DA shit!!! I have a question. I saw an episode where this news reporter goes to this this where apparently an actress which started in movies back in the 30's or 40's(something like that) doesn't Age at all...and has this old wrinkly women working for her, and in mid point of the story the old women says "No, mr. Doe, Im not her mother, I'm her Daughter" AHHH!! haha, I'm trying to find out the title of that episode.. ThanKS =)

@Jokerprodution The Twilight Zone is about many things, but generally it's about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. People sometimes find themselves back in time. Other times, puppets or childrens toys become evil or malicious. There are good aliens from outer space, and bad ones. The Twilight Zone is more a state of mind than a place, but it can be anywhere. This show kind of makes a person think, but it does so in a very entertaining and interesting way. Hope this helps.

@Jokerprodution at the time this show was made people didn't criticized the government as openly as they do today.so Rod Serling(the creator of the show)had to hide the truth meaning of his show behind aliens and stuff like that.Not all episodes had to do with politics,the rest had moral lessons about humanity and its problems.

What a great show.. Many actors introduced on Twilight Zone went on to stardom..

Robert Redford, William Shatner, Burt Reynolds, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Carol Burnett, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, Peter Falk, Jack Klugman, Burgess Meredith, Cliff Robertson, Elizabeth Montgomery, Steve McQueen and Peter Lorre. Probably the finest crew ever assembled for television.

@jovialduke Twilight zone dealt with philosophical, ethic and moral topics, so in this point it was more than a suspense series, but I give credits too to the Xfiles and moreover, I recognize I fancied some episodes like the one when both agents discovered the cure for cancer or the "Little Green men" episode, when Mulder found proofs the "Voyager" made contact with alien civilizations at a secret base in Puerto Rico.
