If you want to see something truly terrifying, check out "Hurricane Katrina Thermo Satellite view". The central red area just explodes after she enters the Gulf.
one of the scariest looking sat. feeds of a hurricane. The way it swells into a monster once it gets into the gulf. Ive been through a few hurricanes Bob in the 90s' i was in MD. Bonnie in VA. Its beyond words what these people had to go through.
yes it was a bad storm but everyone forgets. Rita and Wilma were bad too, in Wilma's case worse and they happened in the same year. The people how stayed were warned to leave and they didn't.
Good god. What a monster. To help put into perspective how huge and powerful it was, I live 250 miles from the coast and our power was knocked out for two days.
i remember i lived in texas and all of us were afraid it was gonna hit us but then i prayed every single night and then the next morning my mom told me that katrina was not coming
Wait you guys rate him bad , he wasnt praying for the hurricane to hit you just him, it wasnt his fault he was doing probobly what everyone in New orleans was doing praying the hurricane woulnt hit!
I live in New Orleans my whole family went through betsy kamil how ever you spell it they all say Katrina was the worst that motherfucker was a beast I stood outside shouting at the storm for wrecking my city Fuck that shit Battle of New Orleans I looked like LT dane from forest Gump LOL I know I'm nut's I just love my city!
This is crap that Katrina was a Cat 3. I was a strong cat 4 at the LEAST, the anemometer i have recorded a sustained wind of over 175 mph(it stops recording after that speed). However, every new channel reported the storm as something different. I was nothing of the lake and stayed home to experience the storm in its full glory. I live in a brick house, and the wind tearing through everything was so loud I could do ANYTHING in my house and nobody could hear a thing.

I mean, really. Do they expect people to believe that Katrina, which was supposedly around 130 mph, had a great surge, by SIX FEET, than Camille, which was around 200mph (gusts)? Keep in mind that both were around the same area when they came ashore.
So, I'm having a hard time believing the "Cat 3" stuff. It was clearly weakening as it was getting very close to shore, but it was obviously at least a Cat 4.
It DID weaken to a Cat 3. That doesn't mean that all the water that built up from when it was a Cat 5 just suddenly disappeared....You also have to think about it's size too. It nearly covered the entire Gulf and it was bigger than Camille! The larger the storm the higher the surge. THAT'S why the surge was so high!
@volcrazy89 your fucking stupid Katrina was a Cat 5 hurricane. She weakened before she hit land. Just cuz she weakened to a Cat 3, it doesnt mean the Cat 5 storm surge just disappears.
think of it this way, from 0:09 to 0:10 she stops in the middle of the Gulf and then moves in by 0:11, if you can catch that, its quick cause its sped up but that is about a whole day in one spot! Fucken intellegent hurricane!
Not at monster at 10 seconds? yeah, that's the whole thing. It packed a very large storm surge ahead of it. So the surge swept away the low-built houses and then also put so much water against the levees that they broke at the weakest points, on the canals.
if it was over water for just one hour longer east of miami it could have strengened to a cat 2 it had an eye butin the radar it moved right across my house awsome.
Stop at 0:11 and you ucan see it makng landfall in plag.parish in Louisiana. At 0:10 sec. what it grows to a monster. Pause at EXACLTY at 0:07 and you see an eye pop up.
Thanks for pointing that out. I'm actually from Belle Chasse, which is in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. My family and I were blessed because we did not get too much damage except for some fallen trees in my backyard. Sadly, I know several people from lower Plaquemines who lost their homes and nearly everything they owned. My family and I went to look at the damage in lower Plaquemines after the storm and it was a huge shock and I did not want to believe that the storm actually happened.

I so agree with you. Cat 3's don't produce 30 ft. surge. They just don't.
And OBTW to whoever made this video: this isn't an infared satellite loop.

thank you, at least someone is intelligent.
And yeah, dude that is a VISIBLE satellite loop...

the highways and interstates were jammed to a halt for a week before the storm hit. You couldn't leave. However, yes, it was still pretty stupid.

it wasnt a monster at 10 seconds... it was a few seconds before it though (when winds reached 175 mph).
The 10 second mark is when the Eye-wall replacement cycle ended and Katrina was weakened to Category 3 strength.

Yes - Katrina was strengthening rapidly at landfall in Miami...I think that caught a lot of forecasters off guard.
