I saw this really cheesy, digital recreation of the Twin Towers in the Watchmen... Did anyone catch them in the funeral scene? They didn't even look real. Couldn't they have done a better job with the CGI rendering and made them look more realistic?
This is always going to be an issue for movies or TV shows or video games set in NYC pre-9/11. When Watchmen came out (which is set in the 1980s) and they decided to put the Twin Towers on the skyline, some people were offended. Personally I don't think it's a big deal either way.
This is just my personal belief. Instead of editing movies and games to not have the World Trade Center Towers, they should, form this moment on edit everything to have them in there.
Thats right. I don't care if its about the American Revolution I want to see the WTC towers standing there immortal and invisible. Any movie set in New York, They should have the towers. All this says is that you can destroy our concrete steel and lives, but you will never take them.
@Eihger But having a movie set in modern day with the towers standing wouldn't be the truth would it? For those the towers meant something to, we won't forget they were there, and I personally don't need a logic defying visual reminder in movies and games in order not to forget.

He's right we should remember even in fiction. Perhaps they forgot or didn't want to dredge up painful memories, but the building is part of history. More than a few older movies and shows have great pictures of the WTC and they shouldn't be edited out. Spike Lee showed ground zero construction in one his films. I didn't care for the film much, but it is part of life in NYC.

So this is what Penn Jillette is reduced to? A fat OLD wrinkly man with a triple chin and gray hair talking about a Ghostbuster video game? LMAO!!! Thanks Penn for allowing us all to see your descent into sub-par bullshit commentary concerning topics no one gives a shit about.
Indeed it was. Seeing as this movie is supposed to take place shortly after part 2, the WTC really should have been there, but since when did American corporations dismiss baseless PC paranoia? Now we've lost the Twin Towers twice!
I used to work at Blockbuster. We had some kids movie playing and they said the word "sex" referring to gender. A lady complained that we should be playing filth in a store where parents shop with their children.
Choose something, anything. Someone, somewhere will complain about it.
In the first two Ghostbusters movies, the WTC was standing. This game takes place in the same universe, and the WTC is gone? I haven't played the game either, but if true, that would be strange... playing it "safe" by being PC?
Atarian2049, unless you have some insider information there's practically no way you could no that. A video game typically is well into production before it's development is even announced. And likely to have a gone through several revisions in that time. If you'd like to get some idea what games go through, I'd suggest reading some 'Post Mortem' articles in Game Developer Magazine. It's a great look into the life cycle of a game in development.
The reason I said that was because I remember reading about the game taking place in 1991 shortly after the announcement (probably the Game Informer Magazine article that was featured on the front page). Before then, you're correct, I would not know.
Making a 3rd movie that takes place today and also including the Twin Towers would make it even more inconsistent in accordance to the overall plot of the franchise.
The Spider-Man teaser was dealt with in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, and really has nothing to do with either the Ghostbusters game or movies.
While it's not a documentary, and not based on fact, it's still inconsistent at best given that the WTC was in both movies. The game, at least was based on the movies, if I'm not mistaken.
I agree with you Penn, I think trying to forget about something like that is just avoidance. WTC and 9/11, all those people who died should be remembered, not edited away. The World Trade Center is part of our history. That would be like pretending the civil war or pearl harbor never happened. we dont edit out images of pearl harbor do we?
The original screenplay was set in the future with teams of ghostbusters traveling through time & space, however when Aykroyd pitched it, the studio said it'd be too expensive so he re-wrote it for present day(1985). That is why I said it didn't matter, because they didn't make that version.=)
If they put the towers in, someone would be offended. They didn't put the towers in, and people are offended. I think they shoulda put the towers in then had a bunch of Arab ghosts ectoplasmically destroy them. That way everybody can be offended.
Please allow me to wish you and yours a safe and happy Nine Eleven Day. Peace, good will toward all, and don't drink & drive.
Secondly, wrongserver, leaving out the WTC is not only an affront to Penn (and me), but it is an affront to the people in them on 911. Agreed- a lot of movies have filmed away from Lower Manhattan if they wanted to avoid showing the changes in the skyline. And if you take the Godfather as an example, the opposite was true. The events in the movie took place years before the WTC was built, so they had to film away from Lower Manhattan to prevent the Twin Towers from being filmed. I would have had no problem with not focusing on Lower Manhattan at all.

True that. It really is a great game, though. All the original cast (sans Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis) and written by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroid.
It's like the third movie we've all been waiting for. It's so weird to look at the series I loved as a kid now that I hold no beliefs in ghosts, but still love the story. Kind of like sodom and gommorah. Best bible story ever. It's more offensive than bottom-of-the-barrel porn!
The development cycle of a video game takes years. During that time a game tends to change and evolve, in the end bearing only a passing resemblance to it's original concept.
While I suppose it's possible that it was intentionally left out for whatever reason, it's more likely that the game was originally supposed to take place in the present and a design decision changed it so the game took place in the past. So either they forgot to remake the sequence or it was too expensive to recreate it.
No, the game was pretty much always supposed to take place in 1991- or at least before 2001. This was to be quite close to the events of Ghostbusters 2.
Is it really the responsibility of a fantasy-based game to remind us of the WTC? Interesting comment from the emailers side, but seriously. It's just a game. If the next Grand Theft Auto game took place in New York in the mid-lates 70's and the tower's were missing....who cares.
Omitting the WTC from movies and games that take place in the past would be like pretending that JFK was never the president, or never was assassinated.
There comes a time when we have to move on in life.
WHERE WERE YOU GUYS when Spider-Man the film, took the WTC out of it's bank heist scene... too soon for ya then? What makes now different? Honestly though, I agree with y'all, come on America grow back your cajones!
There was not bank heist scene in Spider-Man. The bank heist was only shot for the 2001 trailer. The trailer, however, was pulled since it was released a couple months before 9/11. There were a couple shots in the film, though, where the WTC was retained (either in the background or in a reflection of Spider-Man's eye). However, the events of 9/11 were still very fresh in the minds of the people when Spider-Man was released in 2002, and it wasn't a period piece for a particular time.
Take it from someone who has played through the game several times and is a lifelong resident of New York, the World Trade Center is indeed absent from the game. This greatly pisses me off. This is greatly disrespectful to the victims of the terrorist attacks and New Yorkers alike. And what's this bullshit 'they don't exist' in the Ghostbuster world? You see them in both movies! Pretending they were never there is insulting.
It's never forget, not pretend they were never there.
They didn't remove it digitally for the Blu Ray of the movie recently... :) But since the game blows (I think the Wii version isn't so bad) I won't be able to accurately verify Penn's info.
That's right, no WTC and in the 'universe' the WTC was there a scant 7 years earlier as both buildings are seen in the skyline from the original. More than likely they did this on purpose, using a current day layout for the city and deciding after to leave them out as the skyline is only visible for a few seconds.
I'd say from a sales point of view it was correct, controversy for them not being there is a few intellectuals talking, instead of 3 slow news days calling their product insensitive.
When are people gonna realize it is a personal decision to decide to take offense, or be affected by events, and situations. We do nothing in protecting sensitive people from things that may spark negative emotions in them. It has been my experience that going through those negative things has helped me adjust to them, and now they hold sincerely less impact on my life. I am gonna build some paper mache twin towers, 12 feet tall, and put them up in my front yard.
How many people believe that there were extra explosives placed at certain locations to weaken the structure even more?I've seen some documentations on this matter but is it true were there more explosions in certain areas to bring the towers down?Oh and how come at that point in time NOT ONE NY city Cab was within 5 miles of the attack? Was the whole thing a conspiracy or TV propaganda to make money from advertises to sponser a new TV show covering the story?
I think it's very messed up that no one wants to ever talk about what happened with the WTC... I heard a rumor that one of the spider man movies was supposed to have spiderman spinning a web between the 2 towers to save a helicopter.. but it was deleted before it went to theaters... not sure if its true, but if it is, I'm saddened by it.
You can probably find it if you search YouTube, but the first Spider-Man trailer had some crooks captured in their car. The camera pans back and you see them caught between the Towers in a giant web. I also believe that there was a poster of Spider-Man with the WTC reflected in his eye-coverings.
Been years since I saw it so I may have some details wrong.
I can unerstand removing the World Trade Center from games/movies that take place in the future during remakes, for the sole purpose of making sure the movie doesn't seem *as* dated during future viewings.
Removing the buildings in games/movies set during the past to avoid controversy, on the other hand..? Bullshit.
I had to deal with months of people saying stupid shit like "eating FRENCH fries means that the terrorists win!" Well, pretending the towers never existed does the same.
whoever reads Penn's comments, please tell him this: look into the videos of youtube user Seallion ... look into something called Synchromysticism... he will find it INCREDIBLY interesting, specially the 911 stuff.
Are you fucking kidding? I just watched that...and he would HATE that. It would boring, MEANINGLESS, inane, rambling bullshit.
Here is the gist, for anyone reading these two comments. This guy says that Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), Stargates, the World Trade Center, Pyramids, and Snakes on a Plane are all related...and that leads him to the conclusion of...nothing. Don't waste your time. The dipshit sounds like Steve Buscemi and everything he says is absurd.
Sorry to everyone, and especially Penn, for commenting out of the context of this video. But I must respond to FableForge.
Thanks FableForge for the ROFLOL. Those synchromysticism videos are funny as hell. Seallion accuses Bush of an Illuminati connection to 9/11 by way of the cartoon DuckTales and Scary Movie 4. Hil-fucking-larious.
Eh, if you put them in people will complain, if you don't put them in people will complain, if you draw attention to/away from it people will complain, if you go around thinking your own beliefs people will complain... in short: people will complain no matter what you do/don't/consider doing.
I'm glad you put a little more research effort into the BS episodes than you have here Penn. What I take away from this is "It barely rates above 'don't give a shit' " Talk about the roach on the Child/Letterman piece then.
I think people should put them in if they want to or leave them out if they want to. I know the title screen and cover of the Die hard game made for the NES has World Trade Center esque buildings on it with explosions on the top of the buildings. Pure coincidence but totally creepy.
One thing most people in this country seem to agree on is being megalithic sized pussies when it comes to the World Trade Center.
The publishers were probably worried about being sued by 9/11 survivors or boycotted for their 'insensitive' stance on mentioning the there was, in fact, a set of buildings that made up the World Trade Center in the past.
heh, If you think you're doing something important by not watching something because of net neutrality or whatever here's a clue. Get over yourself. If you like it watch it or if you dont like it dont watch it no one, especially sony is going to give much of a shit one way or the other.
Sucking up? How am I sucking up? Besides, there's a LOT of stuff I strongly disagree with Penn on. Seems more like you are the one without opinions; like you only say something to get noticed in a negative light like the first idiots.
i can confirm that your source was indeed correct. i bought the game on the day it came out (happened to be on my birthday) and it was one of the first things i noticed (its in the first cut scene)
9/11 never happened because the WTC never existed! I've never been to NY and so I never saw it in real life, so therefore, it doesn't exist. Actually, that sounds slightly more plausible than our incompetent government blowing them up.
Yes, that's where th 9/11 truthers fail. "W" coul barely lead his way out of a paper bag. How could he orchestrate one of the greatest con jobs in history??
I'm sorry that I've not followed this crackle/sony business as extensively as would seem necessary. But how do you know/mean that they do not believe in net neutrality?
Net neutrality is about not having restrictions on content and so on. By completely denying access to things like Pennsays to the rest of the world, Sony/Crackle have shown that they do not believe in net neutrality. The internet is not just for Americans. It's known as the World Wide Web for a reason, not the AWW, America Wide Web.
But... they're not isp's... are you sure that you grasp the difference between the infrastructure and individual firms operating upon the infrastructure?
Well that was rather patronizing wasn't it? Of course I understand the difference, I'm not retarded. I don't see how it matters. Net neutrality isn't just an ISP issue, or a government legislation issue. It's a corporation issue too. It affects everyone (not you obviously) and it involves everyone.
As a long time gamer I think it could be an honest mistake. Most city layouts are created by 'drawing' over photos of the city they want to use. Say they used a recent picture of the N.Y. shore line. The artist does his/her job as told. With no direction to add in the WTC it gets left out.
I could be wrong but I think its simply a communication error within the company.
What probably happened was they made it from a scene or a picture, then they didn't have to go back and change the model because it was too far along in production. So it sounds more like trying to cover up a production oversight. I base this on having done large, long projects for my job as well.
It looks more like a photo than a model. Probably a 2008 photo. But even then, it's an oversight by the makers of the cut scene, so it's either a conscious omission or a lack of attention to detail- either way doesn't look good.
It's a fictitious game, in a fictious NY. So it's not a big deal. Unless you think the psychokentic blast is real too. Then you need MUCH more help than anyone here can give.
I have my favorite sitcom up on this channel, and every intro shows the WTC towers at the end of the beginning credits. Why on earth would a video game company be sued for showing the WTC towers and who could sue them? And I never understood this "disrespect" thing, that by showing the towers or say having a background on your yt channel with them in it would be disrespectful. Is this part of this country's obsession with political correctness? Who decides what is politically correct? lol
I checked and the shot from the statue of liberty is indeed missing the WTC. If they did this to avoid being sued, it's rather confusing. If they did this out of respect, it's equally as confusing. In 91, the towers were standing. Are we really that PC now that we have to edit history because being historically accurate might hurt someone's feelings?
tramatizing kids? if kids found 9/11 to be tramatizing then so is D.A.R.E. becuz it basically says yer [arents are bad people if they smoke cig's or drink so stfu. hope yer kids like living in tinkie winkie land.

Is it really the responsibility of a fantasy-based game to remind us of the WTC? Interesting comment from the emailers side, but seriously. It's just a game. If the next Grand Theft Auto game took place in New York in the mid-lates 70's and the tower's were missing....who cares.
spudw2k 2 years ago
Omitting the WTC from movies and games that take place in the past would be like pretending that JFK was never the president, or never was assassinated.
There comes a time when we have to move on in life.

WHERE WERE YOU GUYS when Spider-Man the film, took the WTC out of it's bank heist scene... too soon for ya then? What makes now different? Honestly though, I agree with y'all, come on America grow back your cajones!
MorallyAmbiguousGuy 2 years ago
There was not bank heist scene in Spider-Man. The bank heist was only shot for the 2001 trailer. The trailer, however, was pulled since it was released a couple months before 9/11. There were a couple shots in the film, though, where the WTC was retained (either in the background or in a reflection of Spider-Man's eye). However, the events of 9/11 were still very fresh in the minds of the people when Spider-Man was released in 2002, and it wasn't a period piece for a particular time.

Thank you for what I consider a thoughtful and informative comment. Much better than the usual STFU! My faith in youtubers is restored thanks man!
MorallyAmbiguousGuy 2 years ago

To some, especially New Yorkers, it's still a sensitive icon, so it makes sense that they'd leave it out.
eksyte 2 years ago
If they want to make it historicaly acrate then they should show the WTC
quimbyt 2 years ago

IblisTheDefiant 2 years ago 2

StaticFrictionAE 2 years ago

FableForge 2 years ago

Juhsayngul 2 years ago
One thing most people in this country seem to agree on is being megalithic sized pussies when it comes to the World Trade Center.
The publishers were probably worried about being sued by 9/11 survivors or boycotted for their 'insensitive' stance on mentioning the there was, in fact, a set of buildings that made up the World Trade Center in the past.
It's kind of pathetic.

Eldxale 2 years ago 5
9/11 never happened because the WTC never existed! I've never been to NY and so I never saw it in real life, so therefore, it doesn't exist. Actually, that sounds slightly more plausible than our incompetent government blowing them up.

I love ghostbusters, love Penn Jillettes videos, but I can no longer watch them, since crackle/sony do not believe in net neutrality.
shreddakj 2 years ago
I'm sorry that I've not followed this crackle/sony business as extensively as would seem necessary. But how do you know/mean that they do not believe in net neutrality?
plasticsoldier41 2 years ago
Net neutrality is about not having restrictions on content and so on. By completely denying access to things like Pennsays to the rest of the world, Sony/Crackle have shown that they do not believe in net neutrality. The internet is not just for Americans. It's known as the World Wide Web for a reason, not the AWW, America Wide Web.
shreddakj 2 years ago
But... they're not isp's... are you sure that you grasp the difference between the infrastructure and individual firms operating upon the infrastructure?
plasticsoldier41 2 years ago
Well that was rather patronizing wasn't it? Of course I understand the difference, I'm not retarded. I don't see how it matters. Net neutrality isn't just an ISP issue, or a government legislation issue. It's a corporation issue too. It affects everyone (not you obviously) and it involves everyone.
shreddakj 2 years ago
Real cop out job if the devs deliberately took them out.
I'd say patch the game so they're back in..
kbrinks 2 years ago
As a long time gamer I think it could be an honest mistake. Most city layouts are created by 'drawing' over photos of the city they want to use. Say they used a recent picture of the N.Y. shore line. The artist does his/her job as told. With no direction to add in the WTC it gets left out.
I could be wrong but I think its simply a communication error within the company.

rudenoodle 2 years ago
What probably happened was they made it from a scene or a picture, then they didn't have to go back and change the model because it was too far along in production. So it sounds more like trying to cover up a production oversight. I base this on having done large, long projects for my job as well.
jodark 2 years ago
It looks more like a photo than a model. Probably a 2008 photo. But even then, it's an oversight by the makers of the cut scene, so it's either a conscious omission or a lack of attention to detail- either way doesn't look good.

Who decides what is politically correct? lol
apocalyptichybrid2 2 years ago
I checked and the shot from the statue of liberty is indeed missing the WTC. If they did this to avoid being sued, it's rather confusing. If they did this out of respect, it's equally as confusing. In 91, the towers were standing. Are we really that PC now that we have to edit history because being historically accurate might hurt someone's feelings?
