This is my graduation recital opener for SUNY Fredonia. This video is a great help with idea! The percussion idea is awesome, i may put a thumb tack in my shoe to imitate it :D
Folks, if you've not seen it, it is quite lovely written out, and even under my feeble hands, at least fun to try. When I first got the set, I was blown away by the technique assumed. Anyway, great job, on both accounts, the musicianship of William and Brian's composition make a fine team.
As Bill mentioned, it's the last of four movements in Brian Head's "Sketches for Friends". The work is exactly what it says, four sketches written as gifts for four friends. Brian didn't imagine it would receive any attention, but Kanengiser has been touring with the piece for years. This movement in particular is named after a DC metro stop that was on the way to lessons with an early jazz guitar teacher.
What would Segovia do nowadays: probably rise up from his grave to execute judgement.
What would Segovia have done in his lifetime if he tried to play this piece: he would have died instantly (massive failure of 10 fingers, quadruple heart attack, brain fever, multiple strokes, apoplexies, lockjaw...all at the same time. Ha, ha, ha. With all due respect to Segovia, he wouldn´t even consider such a piece because he had his only wonderful musical universe to express himself in.
its just amazing what makes music, Ive just listened to him playing Mozart the turkish rondo, fantastic and now this. Im sure I'll never understand but great!!!!
@fellcole im sorry im just seeing too too much garbage on youtube. and im amazed this awfl piece got so many thumbs up. this man is NOT at all a genius. this is just awful. very mediocre musicians. brian head ! are you kidding me! what a dork. and one thats also not intelligent. this guys is a joke. really. my god. im so annoyed at the stupid people on youtube worshipping absolute awful musicians! look up Thomas viloteau or gabriel bianco or julian bream or marcin dylla. those are good not genus
@fellcole scott tennant is also a joke. read up on the great muscians. not fat guys who strum on the guitar. look up alfred cortot. or horowitz. these men were geniouses. if you think this guy is a genius than you are not at all an experienced musician. i saw this guy play in paris. he played at a festival right after gabriel bianco. gabriel is 22. the difference in seriousness and overall emotion and skill made this guy look amateur which he is. im sorry for coming of harsh. music is importnt.
@sir1920 lol, really guy? You're a very narrow minded and opinionated person. I saw Gabriel Bianco play too: his technique is flawless but he has no expression. It was a boring and stale performance and lacked musicality. If he's a genuis than I quit guitar, lol.
I agree!!! Its just a gimmicky piece- all the rage in the States, sadly. Kanengiser obviously has good technique, but if he has any musical depth, a piece like this wont let him express it.
@GuitarOfTruth i think you are being quite oblivious to the fact that this piece is not meant to be something standard in the repertoire of a CLASSICAL guitarist. Sure thats what Kanengeiser labels himself as, but he plays a lot of alternative repertoire too. Don't expect something from a performance that obviously isn't meant to be delivered. And i don't think this is gimmicky at all - from a jazz perspective, its pretty neat.

So, your point is that technically Segovia was too far away from this level of perfomance?

@classicalmannick101
In what why is it neat from a jazz perspective?
GuitarOfTruth 8 months ago
@GuitarOfTruth good main theme, well developed, interesting harmonic changes, and most of all fun! Not to mention the chance to improvise a little.
