The biggest flaw here is kind of the retread black caricature you see in the banned cartoons. With Tex's direction, the animation is really good -- you can see Uncle Tom is using the same body shape as the dog character (usually the enemy of Droopy, can't remember his name). He accentuates more expression with the characters, compared to other black toons, who seem to be giant smiley faces with really big lips.
And white people were drawn just as dumb looking and inept as the other folks that these animators characatured and parodied. They made fun of everyone. I can't say that all the characatures ever made were fair, but that was the time. People of color didn't make as much out of it then because it was an accepted part of society.
After the 1980's financial deregulation for banks & Wall Street, ya know (Donald Regan's-who was U.S. Secratary of State/C.E.O. of Merryl Lynch- and Ronald Reagan's "Let's cut the bull(Merril Lynch) loose. Then there was the Billion dollar bailout, and proof of CountryWide's and Goldman-Sachs and many other corrupt finacial institutions were brought to light, I personally think the commentary about big business in this cartoon was ahead of it's time. The middle class knew it, the poor knew it.
Uncle Tom sure sounds like the guy who played Andy on Amos N Andy on the television series (not the white guys who imitated black people on the radio, but the black actor on the tv show). I love classic Tex Avery. Forget the stereotypes and enjoy the animation. Like LeGree "rolling in dough" and being a snake. Also the bloodhounds are a nice touch. Thanks so much for sharing this un-PC classic with us all.
It's "bad" because it depicts black characters as they did back in the day of slavery, but other than that, the characterizations are simply hilarious. There is nothing that is truly racist about it .
The "erection" jokes in this are more scandalous than the supposed "racism." I mean, you can stereotype pretty much ANYBODY, but Black folks. If you do THAT, then you're RACIST.
Yes!! Now THIS is hope! And it IS the truth! Noone cares about the color of your skin! You CAN succeed! When life presents a challenge, throw back some enginuity! Show the naysayers who's boss! This is what keeps America strong!
'So how hot was she?'
'really hot!'
'no really how hot'
'Well lets just say she had me eating the table...'

I could see why I did not find this easier then the other toon shorts in the first place. This looked raciest to the black people.

I've never seen this one before. But Tex Avery's "REd" is in it!
Wow, & Snidely Whiplash is in it too.
Too bad the contrast is up so high. I can't find a version of this video by anyone I can use for screencaps.
I love the part with the ketchup & the plates. lol.
