Ok, was this the intro to the japanese version? Did japan have a completely different version of the anime with this style? I am confused. This doesn't seem like Oban Star-Racers at all to me.

I absolutely LOVED this. when they announced that it'd get turned into an anime, i swooned. then the anime came out, and i was...not as enthused.

@Serajadeyn lol it didn't get turned into one, it was planned and designed to be "anime" (or rather, anime-esque) right from the start. This trailer looks the way it does because the 2D animation wasn't ready back in that stage. This whole thing was more a proof of concept than an actual trailer anyway. It's full of visual metaphors (the drop, teeth etc) that clearly indicate the design intention of being anime-like. Heck, Sav the World Production even chose a Japanese song to go along with it.

@as12df12 while that's all true. it wasn't Sav the World Productions who actually produced a show. They produced this and those wacky Japanese liked the concept enough to take it and run into full production. I think this is an important aspect to the show's origins as I think most people miss that this is a French animation concept originally.

Their website says their staff (or most of it anyway) even moved to Tokyo for 3 years to make production more efficient... and that one of the reasons they ended up with Japanese production partners was that none of the potential western production/distribution enterprises was willing to guarantee them complete artistic freedom. Demanding a male main character or changes in art direction and the like...

Actually, this isn't a pilot gor yhe series. On wikipedia ( hurray for wikipedia........) this is basically the base of Oban Star-Racers. The copy right in the video is 2001, five years before the series intitially aired. And it doesn't take forever for an animated series to be created.

I wonder why they didn't go with this 3d look. it looks way better. i always thought the animation in this show was amazing. but the story and voice acting and pretty much everything else sucked and i couldn't get into it. cool concept though. too bad it only lasted 1 season. i would have liked to see it improve. thanks for the upload.

I love the way Ning, Skun, Ondai, and Aikka are animated, but I'm really glad they made Molly a bit more light spirited because seeing those evil pointy teeth would be freaky in the show. xD

I used to have an AVI of this video YEAAARS ago. I was so shocked when I saw they actually were making it as a real show later. Obviously CG animation would have been cheaper and easier to produce, but I suppose that this trailer and it's heavy Japanese leaning help get it co-produced by a japanese animation studio.

The artistic director for this not only created Code Lyoko but also had a hand in creating Basquash.

Lol! The opening is a remix of the song "Boys & Girls " by Ayumi Hamasaki. Lol That's awesome. =) Personally, I think the newer version of Oban Star Racers is better, but that is just me. Either way, great show in my opinion. ^_^
