  • Remember back when people performed live like this? Awesome.

  • I always wondered if Chet could read/write music.

  • @oaklandtobangkok

    I have an interview where Chet was asked the same question, his answer was;

"Yep, but , luckily, not enough to mess up my pickin'!""

  • george has a much nicer tone, and i think he's much better at pure jazz where as chet is leaps ahead at this kinda thing and the more sort of rock/blues/country stuff... but much love to both

  • @mondishify

I hear the tone thing too, but I think it is merely because of old VHS-->crap digital compression=twangy sounds get bad sounding. Live, I bet both were completely delicious with Chet's sound being crystalline and George's being rich and thick but not muddy.

This is one of the coolest videos.

  • Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion. I think these guys are great. I also like all the guys mentioned below.

  • very beautiful

  • Two master guitar player.this is a very nice video.

  • Chet really liked showcasing guitarists. Make no mistake Chet was absolutely one of the best ever, but was one of the few who truly enjoyed sharing the spotlight with others. he could take the lead and blow your mind in the process, but was so comfortable making the other guy look good. Not that George needed much help in that area, but Chet seemed to bring out the best in other guitar players because they knew they were going to have to bring their A game to play along with him.

  • @rockinredneck57 You are entirely correct he was definatley the country gentleman, to put a long story short I met Chet when I was playing in the states, after the show he congratulated my playing (then my head grew from about New Orleans to DC) ha ha and he played my guitar, foolishly I said "impress me" dear God... I still don't know how the guitar didn't catch fire ; )

  • what an incredible pairing.................wow!

  • Such great artistes as Chet, George, Pat and Joe would have enough manners and mutual respect to not try running rings around anyone.

  • Run rings around Clapton? Stop taking nonsense.

  • the seven people that disliked this can kiss my ass

  • unimaginable licks for a simple song

  • Wow, that is actually smooth on the quantum level. Sub-atomic sized mellowness...

  • Apollo Creed vs George W Bush

  • @fishypop13 These 2 gentlemen are not in any way "Opponents." What they are is Masters in thier own right

of a very difficult instrument to Master. They are playing together. ( which if you knew & understood the concept

of which I am speaking, is extremely difficult to successfully pull off )

  • @ancientastronomer I love the music. What I was speaking of is who they look like - it's called humor. (Which if you knew and understood the concept of which I am speaking is not that hard to pull off.) Good luck big guy.

  • @fishypop13 If YOU knew & understood the simple concept of humor in print, then YOU would know & recognize that it is VERY difficult to pull off successfully. Especially when you are an UN-Educated Lout

    such as yourself.....Moron.

  • Comment removed

  • @ancientastronomer You are a humorless ass bag and you don't know shit. You are probably a lead singer or something. That would explain you dull wit and bloated ego. I loved the video. I made a joke and you jumped on it like a hall monitor. I politely retort and you resort to name calling. YOU seem uneducated (without a hyphen) and you are definitely a lout and a moron. I hope everyone enjoys the music as much as I did and I also hope you shut up at let them. What a frickin' dork.

  • @fishypop13 ...LOL...Along with your complete lack of education, you have now shown the entire world

that you completely lack any kind of creative imagination. You have to stoop to stealing my insults slung

at you, just to sling back at me? ......MORON

  • @ancientastronomer Kinda funny....your favorite book is the Bible yet you go around picking on people and calling them names on the internet. I bet hypocrites like you really make Jesus proud.

  • @fishypop13 Kinda Sad.....You have to go digging into my background in search of hidden treasure.

I can see you now; Yheee-Hawww!!! I got this cockucker now!!! He claims to believe the Bible!!!

Yeah. OK, Ya got me. Caught in the act. Yes. I am just another piece of shit sinner. The difference between you & me is that I will freely admit it. Oh, and as for "Name-calling," I suggest YOU read Matt. Ch.23. You may be very surprised to discover that Jesus himself resorted to "name-calling." Ck it out

  • @ancientastronomer I think the difference is that Jesus didn't call people names over a guitar video. We are all sinners and I think it is great to believe in the Bible, I play guitar in a couple of area churches. I think you need to take a deep breath and put this all in context. For some reason you didn't like my joke. Fine. Why couldn't you leave me alone? Why are you so angry? Benson and Atkins are awesome together, right? Lets just find common ground and leave it at that. Peace.

  • @fishypop13

    Know that was fuckin' funny!!!!!!

  • Is that a Peavey Bandit?

  • george benson shreds the hell outta chet!!! so hilarious

  • @Jazztastic2112 ...LOL...and just how the fuck do you come to that conclusion? Ya wanna know somthing asswipe? For EVERY NON-Musically educated piece of dogshit such as yourself that would dare allow such a comment pass thier lips regarding a Master of the Guitar such as Chet. The same will be found amongst scum like you that would dare say the same about another Master of the Instrument, George. ONLY a NON-Guitar-Playing Shit-for-Brains would dare cross such a boundary & then laugh about it.

  • George oozes cool class and mastery. Chet... well he was the daddy

  • Stylish and perfect!

  • Benson plays Country awsesome

  • Two great players playing great together. I'm so impressed with Chet's maturity and generosity.

A lot of players would have turned that into a "cutting contest," in which Chet could certainly have held his own. He didn't do so, however. He seemed delighted to let George break loose on the tune without feeling like he had to compete. There aren't many players who play half as well as Chet who would let that happen. Chet was a true master and a real class act.

  • @jgiblin You are absolutely correct. The greatness of Chet Atkins was more in his humble approach than in anything else. The guitar world has become, excuse me for my language, a pissing contest, where only technique and speed seem to matter, and Chet - While he was both technically great and speedy when he needed to - Always played what was BEAUTIFUL, only what was necessary for the tune to shine. Chet was the master of "No unnecessary notes", and for that above all else, to me, he's the best.

  • @LickNRiff To me, the great thing about Chet was his discretion and abililty to not overplay.(or repeat themselves) There have been some great technical players through the ages but the main problem was they never knew when to stop or use space (Garcia and Trey are 2).

Both great technical players but they leave me yawning. Chet was never into 45 min solos.

I agree with you entirely about the pissing contest.

    .Chet's tone was always perfect!

  • The beauty of Chet, was that he would "sit-in" with anyone! This made for some interesting collaborations.

Hence, we have this. . .

  • 1:47

  • I never thought I'd see this , very difficult , the award still goes to chet

various reasons such as his work on bach and mozart.

now don't get me wrong , george and I have had some good times

    love em both.

  • Some of Benson's licks there...I found myself saying "%$£ off!" out loud with a big smile on my face! :o) Absolutely superb!

  • thank u for posting this

  • Damn George Benson!

  • Legendary!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • GREAT MUSICIANS making GREAT artistic MUSIC.

  • GREAT !!! TNX !!!

  • beautiful playing, terrible song

  • @stoob1969 How is this a terrible song? ^^

  • @LuXguitaR 70's cowboy cheese, but hey, whatever floats your boat...

  • Really nice...classy! Nice pairing. Bit tense, like it.

  • They look like they are in love :D

  • ai sim olha a patada eo que é pior ele canta pra caramba tbm

  • Two guitars don't get any better than this.

  • What a team! Perfect blending!

  • Nothing cooler than seeing two giants from different sides of the muical track GETTING DOWN! Thanks for posting!

  • I love that lick at 1:46

  • @thagoodosn nice way to begin a solo

  • Two super heavyweights! That was so good!!

  • Although i love all guitar players from all genres the Jazz guitarist (or jazz musician in general) shows much greater mastery over harmony, melody, chord changes, arpeggios..greater imagination that isn't just stuck in a Mixolydian/Pentatonic cage or ceaseless string bending. George Benson, Pat Martino, Joe Pass would run rings around rock guitarists like Clapton.

  • @taildragger53 True. At least Clapton is one of the ones who admit it. The 1930-40's guitarists run rings around the 1960-70's players.

  • @3rdPR I used to love Clapton's playing as a kid but he really hasn't "said" anythjing new since Blind Faith. I always thought it hilarious when he dictates to Doyle Bramhall the 2nd just "how a Robert Johnson Blues SHOULD be played!" ( from the "Me & Mr Johnson" DVD)

I mean to say, he's telling an American how true Blues should be played(??) Eric gets abit smug at times.

  • @taildragger53 it would be interesting to see a jazz musician match up against a 40's mississippi delta musician though. delta is far less knowledgeable but man could they bring their guitar to a godly level.

  • @wick2107 Absolutely true.Actually most Jazz guitarists are huge Delta Blues fans.

Benson is one, but they all have a deep respect for the early Bluesmen.

One of the closest links to the earliest forms has always been Kenny Burrell.

Check out his track on youtube called "Downstairs"..a tribute to Lightnin' Hopkins.

  • @taildragger53 So you´r saying just because Chat plays a simple melody he lacks harmony knowledge?

Go look for a video with Tommy Emmanuel - yet just another "mixolydian/pentatonic" guitarist if you like to call it that way :D playing with John Jorgenson

  • Comment removed

  • @taildragger53

Sure we are I didn´t mean it in a bad way...I just wanted to point out that simple doesn´t have to mean stupid

  • Comment removed

  • @HrubyHonza I did misunderstand you and i do apologise . Well, i have lots of Atkins stuff on LP and i saw him live a few times...once with Lenny Breau. The thing with Chet was he never rushed...but then he hand picked tunes that were perfect for him..Chet's style was Country and that doesn't call for chromaticism.

I recall when Breau got chastised for playing chromatic jazz on a C&W tune!

He got sacked from his own fathers band for playing "outside' the theme!

But that's why i love jazz.

  • @taildragger53 I have removed my absurd reactionary comments.

     Apologies once again!

  • Comment removed

  • @taildragger53

    Yeah I suppose you´re right ´bout Slowhand.

But then again, his magic has always been in the mix of major and minor pentatonic melodies.

Simplistic, yet great. I do agree with you about the harmony skills of cats like Benson, Pass, Lagrene and others. Guess I got carried away because of Chat, because his ability to play the melody in so many ways and his composing skills as a fingerstyle guitarist were amazing. And choosing between Emmanuel and Clark is picking up favorite child

  • @HrubyHonza

Oh yes, i agree with you that Chet is reknowned for being a pretty player.

Always the right tone for the song and many of his songs were Latin show tunes or novelty tunes but the arrangements were always 1st class. "Fiesta" was one of my faves of his.

Always played well within the boundaries of the song, unlike Benson who just completely baffles you with chromaticism.

Both Chet & Benson were influenced alot by Hank Garland.("Sugarfoot Rag")

  • @HrubyHonza I saw Eric so many times during his career. From 1967 right thru. to 1989.

The worst time was when he was the main spokesman for the Neo-Nazi Party in the UK (around 1976)

That was a hoot ! He was supporting Freddie King at the time.( I actually went to see Freddie.)

IMHO I liked Mick Taylor & Peter Green more than Eric, as far as Brit Blues goes.

Taylor has to be one of the most inventive players in Blues.

  • @taildragger53 I so agree with you. I have a friend who thinks Clapton, Beck, etc are the greatest guitarists of our time (a view shared by many). I think a view encouraged by their style of popular music. But George Benson is so underrated and could play circles around the aforementioned. Yes, the jazz guitarist is a good level above these other players. I am so impressed by George Benson (and the other jazz guitarists). Btw, also check out the Gypsy Jazz players, who are also amazing

  • @Humanfactor7 The Gypsy style is born out of Flamenco, which is hugely Arabic.

I've been a Django fan since 1967. I recall seeing Wes Montgomery when i was a kid so Clapton etc don't impress me. Some may like the 3 licks those guys play but i prefer imagination and command of the frets.

The jazz musician is pushed to learn his instrument backwards & forwards.

Joe Pass said "In jazz, if you play blues licks, within 1 min you've run out of them and end up repeatiing yourself".

  • @Humanfactor7 I have to say, alot of folk don't know that Benson plays guitar because of his vocal pop hits (which were poor in comparison) but it brought him alot of cash. Although he was initially a vocalist, at 4 yrs old, BEFORE being a guitarist.

His guitar took the back burner for MANY yrs during the 80s/90s.

But i recall seeing him in 1972 when he burnt a hole in the ground with his unbelievable fiery fretwork.

Very few knew about him, or even Pat Martino, back then.

  • @taildragger53 Yes, that's the essence of what they do. The jazz musicians will play the same tune a hundred different (creative) ways.

  • @taildragger53 i dont think comparisons are valid between any music.. because its all subjective.

  • @taildragger53 You seriously underestimate Mr. Clapton, and Jerry Garcia, and Trey Anastasio, and Carlos Santana, and Warren Haynes, and Jimmy Herring, and Dweezil Zappa and.......

  • @yragoner Sorry, so many sound identical.

When it comes to true innovators we come down to just a handful.

Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian. But i DO admire Eric Johnson's playing..also Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Sonny Landreth & Derek Trucks, Danny Gatton. They have/had their OWN sound. Clapton is hugely overrated, so is Carlos.

Carlos's brother , Jorge, is better than Carlos.

  • @taildragger53

Recently I've been totally blown away by Joe Pass. And Pat Metheny is totally distinctive, too, even without his MIDI. (q: do you fly a Piper Cub :-)

  • @vibratingstring Metheny has done some wonderful stuff. I have all his very early albums.

Joe Pass; I saw J.P 4 days in a row in London in 1977 (Ronnie Scott's Club) and then the following week met him whilst browsing in a jazz record store near to where he was staying. He was looking for his own LP's from the early 60s.Joe was a very sincere & modest guy. The store owner gave Joe a very hard time . was very insultive.

    I don't fly anything.)

  • My jazz band instructor/leader is one of the really great jazz trumpeters in Texas. He says there are many really great technical plaayers but only about 1% are "naturals". George and Chet are technically great, but both are naturals. They clearly demonstrate that in this duet when they take two widely separated musical genres and meld them into a truly great performance.

  • Just push record! These guys totally rule this number. Enough Said!

  • Music has no racial boundaries whatsoever. It brings people together and that's the way it should be. These guys are playin' the blues, gospel, country and some r&b. Classic.

  • This is a really great duet. There is a nice contrast in guitar tones. Both of these guys have great taste but coming from different backrounds. The result is an interesting and entertaining conversation. Very tasty stuff.

  • Maybe it's just me but this song puts me in the MOOD :D

  • @AlAlekhine We all know benson is outstanding, but any guitarist should know Chet set a standard of quality back in the 50s. In any of his videos you can find good taste and musicality. Check his cd with Tommy Emmanuel if you haven´t. Tommy is actually the best acoustic guitarist ever. his cd "Only" will certainly be amoung your favorites, trust me. best wishes from Arg.^^

  • All I can say is,WOW

  • There are many great guitar players, Hendrix, Clapton, Santana, Al Di Meola, Tommy Emanuel, Jimmy Page, Johnny Winters, Paco De Lucia, etc.

When you get to that level, I believe you cannot say one is the best as there all the best.

  • @casyatbat 'jimmy page , hendrix , clapton santana n al di meola' dont even get close to montgomery, benson, christian, les paul, joe pass and d other jazz guitar masteros.. agreed tht each one is individual.. but musical out put on a common progression speaks loads.. love n peace from the equator

  • @PIYUSH1188, Have you heard Santana's Caravanserai & Borboletta? So beautiful. They were inspired by the Great John Coltrane.

Have you heard Al Di Meola's World Sinfonia inspired by Astor Piazzola or any of the Di Meola/Chick Corea/ Paco De Lucia collaborations?

Have you heard Hendrix Electric Lady Land, so beautiful and imaginative?

    Have you heard Tommy Emmanuel?

I like Benson & Montgomery & also Phil Upchurch.

They are great musicians and composers and for me deserve equal respect!

  • @casyatbat ,look its not my opinion or yours dat matters... d amount of chords santana , al di meola or hendrix can handle is obviious...do lisn to how insensitive by wes, shadow of your smile and california dreaming by benson, and paco de lucias rio ancho wid out al di meola..... i;ve heard to the traks u mentioned.. dey are alll great players buddy.. just tht a few of dem have worked alot harder dan d rest and deserve d due credit... love n peace again from the equator

  • oh my God! that was awesome

  • George benson def one of the best guitarists around

  • its chet & george! not george & chet! so we know who the champion :)

  • AWESOME! And Chet's rockin' a good old fashioned Peavey bandit.

  • Great!! Shame about the MIDI backing though.

  • George Benson tore up that fret board! He just plays it so smoothly! It's like a Shaolin Martial Artist performing masterful Kung Fu forms yet making it look smooth & easy.

And Chet Atkins has that Tennesse twang that exemplifies art in motion with some wine on the side.

I like how both these masters have their own sound & their own style to the point that they're having a conversation with 2 guitars. Just simply Amazing!

  • Two gentlemen with talent and Class!

  • love how i dont even need to look at the video to know whos playing :)

  • What you have just witnessed is the blending of culture, heritage, individualities, styles and lest I forget, the music was awesome too!!!

In the realm of musical craftsmanship these guys operate at a level even MENSA members fail to understand.

    theodas

  • Tasty.

  • wow jazz and country mix :-)

  • Two greatest guitarists of all time...George played with all his passion !! But Chet, man, I don't know how he put the melody into my head so relaxedly !!

  • what is this song about?

  • @assa123assa123 The song is called,"Help me make it through the Night."

It is an old Country Music Song from the Late 60s or early 70s. Type it in to YouTube here & it will probably spit a hundred different renditions of the song back with a wide assortment of Singers from that era of time.

  • just the best

  • I am having a really hard time believing that there are actually FIVE thumbs down on this... Beautiful seems a silly word. What incredible synergy and mastery here.

  • @avalemert Simple: 5 LOSERS whom will never have the ability, patience,

or aptitude to appreciate true skill and expertise of a precise and fine artform.

    Basically, Degenerate Scum.

  • Profiik xXd :D

  • that drum kit is tight too!!!

  • Wow.. just wow.. So smooth and melodious. Great video, muzikman74

  • Only these two could play as many notes and not get in each others way..... now that is pure talent. Oh and i agree with jvlvs2, they both adapted their styles ever so, to make this work SO well.

    Awesome indeed

  • super delightful!!

  • It may be the tune itself... but I do believe that Chet, with a couple of slight, subtle phrases, gets George to play with more chitlin's than he usually does...

  • Whoa oohooo!!!!

  • smooth,,close your eyes, lie back and just chill,,,,,

  • Obama vs Bush,...

  • @smithkonj Haha...

  • The two best guitar players ever..Most people now days do not even know who either one is..The know May,Clapton, Santana, SRV, but these guys are old school

bedrock of guitar playing...Rock remember your roots..Jazz,soul and country

  • ibanez rule!!!

  • priceless!

  • Awesome... nothing els to say

  • I would say this is the best thing I have ever seen!

  • great playing. george overplayed a tad bit tho... chet was telling him to slow down in guitar speak!

  • "Can't we all get along?" You bet!

  • It just doesn't get any better guitar picking than this.....Both are tremendous...

    R.I.P. Chet we miss you......

    10 stars for ever.......

  • thepianofixer@yahoo.com

  • Grand Masters at work ;)

  • WOW!!!

  • Chet's one of my favorites, and George is really SOLID here!

  • 'll bet George would add a new diminson to classical music. Or..has he already?

  • Those men gonna kill me!amazing!!

    look their faces..relaxed..happy..serene..

    My God..

  • Love it!! Made me smile.

  • Brilliant.

  • @shetalkscrazytalk84 I couldn't have said it any better... If there was a guitar speed limit George benson would have racked up enough tickets to pay off every US citizens credit debts... The man is FAST

  • Too sweet...

  • They had fun. So great to see.

  • chet atkins, the greatest picker of all time!!

love Benson too btw so no harm intended!:)

  • George Benson is freakin' amazing! Nice guitar too.

  • when you play for a living...and you're in front of a camera and crowd....it's always head-cuttin.

  • George does it again.

  • Two greats performing with great respect for each others syles. No head cutting here. Love it!

    Big Ron

  • Can't stop smiling... thanks for sharing

  • there are some pretty fast players out there but when George gets flyin there's just no catchin'm

  • thanx for this wonderful video.

  • Two of the greatest guitarists ever, complimenting each other like I've never seen before. Smoother than ice and glass. Talk about eat sleep and drink guitar. The best electric guitar ever. Thanks a truckload!

  • George Benson...who else wants to follow dat?

  • I can't stop grinning at this. It's just so nice!

  • I don't care who it is playing with Chet. All of us guitar players are just students. And deep down in Benson's being (you can see it in his eyes around 1.10-1.18), he wants to be approved by the master, just as all us players do.

  • @LashBridges

No? If anyone it would be Django Rheindhart. George praises that man

  • Is this an ad for Ibanez?

  • @Rikk303 How could it be when Chet is playing a Gibson? Of cource George is playing an Ibanez.

  • @ttsqas silly me. I was thinking of that moment when an apprentice like Jeff played with Les using a Strat.Have a feeling Les felt a bit astounded when listening to Chet play.George, the elephant in the room?

  • That's a trademark Atkins lick at 0:51 !

  • WOW!!! Amazing, two guitar players I would have never thought I'd see play together.

  • Thanks for posting!!!

  • God bless em' both. Amazing performance.

  • Man, who says jazz and country don't mix? And they're both akin to the BLUES, baby! Gotta love the chemistry between these two.

    RIP, Chet!

  • @jvlivs2 Agreed! ANY popular music that keeps the blues in it will be good IMO. I think music goes wrong when the blues is stripped out, for example most pop country, heavy metal, alternative, new age, what have you.

  • @FarEastBeast so im gonna presume chopin, mozart, liszt, rachmaninoff all suck?

  • @flipperboy Presume anything you want. I will point out, however, that you seem to have misread, or misunderstood, my post. The first key to understanding it is "popular", as in pop music. They second is "stripped out." The composers you mention never had "blues" to begin with. Might I presume your reading comprehension skills suck?

  • @jvlivs2 Larry Carlton, GB, Mark Knopfler..... They've all played with Chet. HE is the link between them all, look at his smile when he plays, always : just have fun playing your guitar.

We all miss you, Chet, but as you told us, you're still alive when we listen to your guitar....

    Thanks for all

  • @jvlivs2 nice chemistry

  • @jvlivs2

Anyone who says Jazz & Country don't mix hasn't heard Danny Gatton & Joey De Francesco's CD "Relentless".

    Best wishes my friend!

  • @jvlivs2

..i meant to add, George Benson was really influenced by Hank Garland and Hank straddled the verge between C&W & Jazz.

George Barnes was another jazz player with a C&W feel.

Joe Pass' last CD ( which he did with Roy Clark in 1994) was a tribute to his biggest heroes, Hank Williams & Gene Autry.

  • It don't get no finer than that, ladies & gentlemen.

  • what a beautiful ending!!!! Heart to heart to OUR hearts!!! Melody is from GOD!!! Channeled to us through men like these!!!!!!
