  • hey alva its nick! man its been a while since ive seen your awesome bass playing hope all is well :)

  • Nice Job..very tight..but you seemed bored playing it

  • Pretty good. Always love it when people spread Rush's music and keep it alive. Now for some constructive criticism: while technically precise, your playing sounds choppy. Geddy himself said in a bass magazine interview that he often lets his strings "ring out". Maybe you should let them ring out a bit. I think you'll notice that your sound will closer replicate the bass perfection that is Mr. Geddy Lee...

  • Wow :O You're amazing

  • i guess some people have never heard of slurs before

  • I can hear you well and you do Geddy justice .Real good man.

  • Sounded good. Love that Rickenbacker tone. Too much staccato though.

  • No, it is not false..perhaps, you dont know what stacatto means...It`sO.K with Avabass baslines

Try again and don`t be so straightminded, please!

    Flavy

  • Why is everything so god damn staccato?!?! You didn't even play a lot of the song right..

  • @Luckyhat66 THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That was a good cover Alvabass. Keep on Rockin' If youget a chance, check out my videos at the TorqueTheRich channel!!!

  • i respect your ability to play this but the staccato playing on this song just makes me raise my eyebrow in annoyance

  • @belial1237

It IS stacatto..can`t you hear a all?

Please take a more deep listeningto to geddy`s part..

I`ve done, and it sounds so...a quick stacatto!

  • @flavy1000 False.

  • @flavy1000 you miss understand what i mean though i know it's a quick staccato but this sounds a bit robotic and i have gone into a deep listening and i find it's really quite fluent, and i have the geddy lee bass tab book and there wasn't very many eighth and sixteenth rests in the man riff nor in the solo.

  • @belial1237

Yes...I now understand..perhaps you are right ont the fact about sixteenth or eight rests..it`s a fine line to get Geddy`s sound..jajaj!

And the worst is..that he plays it a different way many times..live..or studio..

    I`l pay attention to that

BTW..who are the tabas from...to say..it is Geddy himself who wrote them?

Thanks for the data..and for commenting!

    Flavy

  • Mr. Choppy Staccato man!!

  • Outstanding!!!!!!!

  • One of the most difficult Rush pieces, especially at the end...

Love this song and the posibbility to see if I get it the correct way . I always do as you did here, with the song at the"back"trying to train my ear, and not to use tabs...I generally do this...

It`s nice to play fingerstyle, Geddy shows us that this must not be boring, on this excellent work: you must have a computer on your head, for the last part,.I think it`s like a Puzzle,ja,ja...

    You`re really trustable,man..Thanks a lot!

  • Damn i LOVE BASS!

  • Nice Job!

  • do u bi-amp? u can get ALOT closer to his sound this way

  • Thank you so much for your comment! I've been extremely curious about bi-amping my Ric (for studio recordings, at least), but haven't done it yet. I need a proper cable for that. I tried with a stereo cable with two mono plugs on one end and a single one on the other, but didn't work. BTW, the Ric-O-Sound kit has been discontinued.

  • Not bad1 Awesome! I don't think that I could even do that either! I had a hard enough time playing guitar when I was in 8th grade. If I tried to play "Freewill" by Rush on bass guitar or electric guitar, I WOULD SUCK so bad at it! Keep rockin'!

  • Beautifully played. Thanks for the show!

  • you gotta let the notes linger

    nice bass

  • good work

  • dude where did you gt the rickenbacker bass its so sick

  • I bought it brand-new in Sam Ash in early 2006. Thank you for your comment!

  • Love the rickenbacker!

  • Good job, I love the solo part! :D

  • I liked it. good job. Nice tone. a little rough in spots but way better than I can play it. Keep ricken dude. Thats not a typo, but a bad pun.

  • Alva, you're a great bassist. I love your YYZ cover, and your "Eruption" on bass cover. However, I have to agree that you play this a little too staccato, but if that's your style then that's fine, I'll back off. Just thought I'd let you know.

  • It's OK, man. I really appreciate your opinion. Thank you so much! :)

  • You're most welcome. Again, you're awesome! Keep up the good work.

  • ITS PLAYED IN A STACCATO STYLE!!!!...jeez does anyone think he's playing like this because he cant play in a more fluid style. Its actually harder to play this way from a technique point of view!.GEDDY plays this way on the studio version!.Nuff sed!

  • It's a mixture really. In the main riff the notes are longer than Alvabass plays them, but in the solo they are evidently more staccato. Whether they are staccato or not Alvabass does a fantastic cover nonetheless, so chill out dude.

  • it's bit too choppy for the song

  • Rush basslines are choppy. Where have you been?

  • sorry dude. not that good. way too staccatto, lots of wrong notes.....you have students? give then their money back.....

  • WOW! After watching some of chaisson's videos, he really has some nerve commenting as such. Alvan is 10 times the player chiasson could ever be.

  • Are you joking?

  • dude instead of normalizing, try using a low pass filter then boost and or envelope if you need too. you sounded great tho _|,,|

  • dude your fucking sick. r u in a band?

  • Thank you so much for your comment! You can see my band at /watch?v=TjVPBFS_e4c (That's the second half of the YouTube link. YT doesn't allow to post full URLs here). Thank you again! :)

  • I haven't seen your Freewill cover video yet!!! As all your bass videos, just perfect!!

Alvaro, you are really great!!! Is very good to virtually play with you!!

  • is it just me or are you a really small guy?

  • Well, I'm 5' 10" (179 centimeters) tall. :)

  • That's exactly average for a while male in the USA. Great playing, I really respect what you do! If you have any tips, please critique my videos.

  • Dude, you get such a sweet sound!

  • I love the Rick ;) You play great and all, but (this might be a result of playing near the bridge) be it as it may, you should hold your notes full value and try and make it less choppy...o well =\ great cover again! =D

  • job well done my friend, ive spent the last few days trying to learn this song, the solo is my only downfall at the moment

  • i think your bass is a little out of tune

  • buen sonido!!

  • Oh man, mind blowing!

  • I love your version bro! I am keeping a lookout for a fireglow ric like you have...great sound. What amp are you playing from?

  • Thank you for your comment! I use a Kustom KBA30 practice amp for my videos, man. Its line output is plugged to my PC sound card's auxiliary input.

  • you did a great job but you should try to make your playing sound smoother overall it was great

  • this guy is one of my favorite bass players on youtube no matter what kind of bass he uses but i love the dweebs who say things like "WoW niCe BAss!!11 lol"

it's like saying to a photographer "nice camera" or a painter "nice brushes" or an architect "nice bricks"

btw for all the rickenbacker yuppies; geddy used a jazz bass for this recording

  • the funny part is

people in those professions do talk like that

my brother is a professional photograhper and he talks all the time about gear

and he makes rouygly 110 grand a year free lance photograhpy

so u saying its just lil dweebs

as for architects thats just not similar enough and a painters brushes arent meant to be beautiful...so they arent similar either...

guitars/basses are made for the look otherwise we'd all play steinbergers

  • yeah, he is my favorite for learning rush songs. if it wasn't for his yyz cover, i'd still be trying to figure it out.

    lawl, "nice bricks"

  • Wow spoken like true at home elitist.Don't play many gigs or mix with too many musicians huh?I've been playing in touring bands for 10 years. And it very common for musicians to talk shop about gear esp.basses and guitars, since the sound, look and feel of every instrument is unique. And one other thing my wife is a photographer and many times I've heard other photogs say wow thats a beautiful camera or I love that specific piece of gear. Go back to your bedroom where you pretend 2 know everything

  • i'm glad for your wife.

  • wow ur a dumbass...

or just extremely jealous tht he invested in something tht u'd have to suck dick for...

btw- architects dont carry bricks around w/ them...

  • yes extremely jealous... i actually sold my rick for the jazz i'm using in my vids

btw, if i were you i'd suck dick for some english lessons.

  • "i'd suck dick for some english lessons."

hey bud! cut that out... you dont want people to think ur a fag!

but ur english IS pretty bad.

  • Not the right bass for this song? Geddy recorded this song with his Rick.

Except for "Different Strings" which was his Fender, the rest of the album was recorded with his rick.

  • Muy bueno!!

  • nice bass, but not the one for this song bro

  • another stupid person who critisizes a great bass player....

i bet you cant even play and you critisize this awsome player...

  • Really nice bass guitar. I played at a Rick in a Pink Floyd cover band. The video from that show lays at my videos if you wanna see.

  • nice farmers tan

  • I LOVE YOUR BASS GUITAR!!!!!!

  • yeaaaaaa!!

  • the notes aren't supposed to be staccatos....

  • Love the tone of that Ric!

  • what kinda bass is that its amazing

  • Rickenbacker

  • shame on this teacher! he plays this lazily. The bass playing here is wrong, there's a guy that has done the bassline correctly but he is using a Fender Jazz which actually sounds better too. Rush are from TORONTO only Neil was from St catharines. so ignore nathan10X.

  • u suck balls

  • anyone who can claim to think that a fender jazz is better than a rick is just fucking stupid. honestly, how the hell do u sleep at night?

  • i LOVE the fender jazz bass BUT anyone who says a j bass is better than ANY rick should be shot in the fucking face

  • check out the video for yyz from this guy, you might not say a fuckin word after watching something like that, now........... a fender better than a rick?????? LLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO youre a fuckin dumbass

  • lmao a fender jazz..better than a rick...that made me fucking laugh out loud you have got to be a moron to even think something like that

  • Okay, seriously dude, don't even comment. Nobody wants to hear some bullshit Youtube hater saying things that make completely no sense. Playing it lazily or not, he still can play it much better than you. Also, no one in their right mind would take a J Bass over a Ric.

  • i would

  • I think your screenname describes you pretty well. An immature, ignorant fool who thinks everything is a competition. First of all the playing here is really and has few mistakes. Plus I don't see you playing any fucking better!

  • You're wrong.

  • o wow. your fretboard looks amazing.

  • Great bass, great playing, and great sound.

    Great :D

  • I do Alex's parts!

  • Correction, Rush is from St.Catherines, Ontario, Canada. Toronto is located 1 hour away from St. Catherines. Sorry I take great pride in where Rush originated because they are one of the only actually 'good' bands to come out of the Niagara Region.

    :)

  • Hey man, i think the 1600 USD you paid was well spent, you definetly kick some ass bro! keep up the good work,!!!!!

  • a little staccado (or however how spell it), but still good

  • whats the difference if 4001 and 4003?

  • The main difference is that the 4003 has an improved truss rod system that can handle roundwound strings' higher tension with no problems. There are lots of stories about damaged 4001 necks since they were designed with flatwounds in mind only.

I think there are other minor differences including different pickups, but in essence, both are the same (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Thank you for your comment!

  • ok,did urs cost round 1700 dollars?

  • 1600 USD in '06 including shipping to my country, man.

  • rickenbacker is a hell of a good bass, but is it worth the money?

  • Well, what I can tell you is that the Ric is one of the most unique sounding and looking basses out there and to me, that's enough reason to gladly pay every penny.

  • check out The Jam....

  • how much was your bass guitar?

  • I'm not sure of the difference...I've got a black 4003 I bought new about 4 years ago and I really like it...really nice big full low end to it.

  • I love the 4003, I've just Uploaded my version with a Fender Jazz which I also Love to Death !! Keep up the Good Work !!

  • I can play Alex's parts but I can't upload any of at the moment.

  • hey man, how do u get that deadly fuzzy tone?, wat tone settings, and if so, amp settings on wat amp

  • Thank you so much for your comment, man. That's just the Ric's natural tone. I mean, I plugged it into my Kustom KBA30 practice amp, which line out was plugged into my sound card (Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum). All controls were set flat. My Ric's tone controls for both pickups were fully open, same as the bridge pickup's volume. Neck pickup's volume was slightly rolled off. That combination gives more midrange presence. (Continued...)

  • hey i want to start putting my bass playing on youtube how can I connect it to my soundcard

  • The thing is, the 4003 is one of the growliest basses you'll ever find, man. Although it's not my primary instrument, I love it to death.

Thank you again for your interest! :)

  • Like yourself I have one but I don't play it all the time but you can't match the unique sound for some things. It has a signature tone all it's own for sure. You don't see that many young guys playing them though...not sure why.

  • I'm pretty sure that has a lot to do with the Rickenbacker, since everyone I've heard has this sound. An amp is important as well, to improve the sound. One day, I will own one of these basses..

Good video, I hope to learn the song someday.

  • that wasnt really a very noticeable mistake, i can do the first 2 bits of the fast section, but the third bits timing throws me...

  • I think this is the best version on you tube

  • wow, i just cant get enough of that sound. beutiful!

  • Great playing..why does nobody do Alex's parts?

  • dont know my friend could probably post one he can play it perfectly!!!

  • Cool vids but I also you need a bit more sustain on some notes.

  • Yeah thats true

  • Sunburst Rickenbacker! :O

It'd look cooler with a black pick guard, though.

  • its not sunburst its fireglo

  • hah, your "mistake" at 3:44 is better than most of my regular playing. good job man, this is pretty cool. also, i love the rickenbacker bass...very very nice bass.

  • I gotta admit, out of all the basses ricks look the coolest man. Good stuff.

  • Very well done!!

  • That was good, but as a bass player, my advice is to feel it, man. You looked very robotic. You just gotta feel it, and your notes wil ring longer, and it'll sound a bit better.

  • beautiful rickenbacker dude

    i love rush

  • that rickenbaker must have sent you back about 2 grand, but you said you lived in clumbia so i dont know what the foreign exchange would be

  • One word:legato

  • Besides some of the notes being way too staccato, I love the sound. The Rickenbacker truly has a great sound. Love your vids man.

  • Alvabass, have you ever heard of Legato? Can you hold a note down until the next cometh along? Can you not hear how wrong your interpretation is? Listen not only to the notes, but HOW Geddy is playing them.

  • Yeah, way too much stacaccato in the notes during the verses. Otherwise I think he nailed it.

  • reminds me of my first prostate exam when prostatic secretions came out of my peehole and onto a slide.

  • great run. my gripes with this take is your style and accenting... geddy plays a lto mreo agressive with hsi ricky, you reach his kinda grwoly tone a few tiems but his accents in teh fills and jsut teh bass lines truely bring lfie to his playing

secondly, you play some short and muted in a funky/percussive kinda way. mebbe is just hwo i comes otu on youtube or your guitar settings, but the lack of any sustain kinda makes it feel out of place

great playing tho. i lvoe your videos

  • damn sweet bass

  • i hate to be a pest, but i'm in a good mood, and im plotting. how did you come by your Rick? and what model is it? 4003?

  • Thank you for your comments, man! Yes, it's a 4003 and I bought it brand new at Sam Ash Miami in May '06. My fretted Bongo is my main gigging bass but I truly love my Ric. It's a great instrument.

  • sam ash eh? and it costed around what, 1600? thats about a summer and a school year of work, especially if i wanna get new amps. i got the stupid starter amps, and it SUCKS. my bass is one of the fender P-bass knockoffs. its a california.

  • Exactly. 1600 USD, but that included shipping to my country, so the actual price was around 1500.

  • ahhh. allright then. where are you from?

  • I live in Colombia, man. Look in YouTube for videos about the city of Bucaramanga and you'll know a bit about my hometown.

  • should of went to musicians friends, the have it for 1400 american dollars.

  • hmmmm... my teacher tab this out for me, and the part where the vocals start is a little different... damn it.

  • its ok. just give it a little more feeling

  • O_O

  • yo rush freek fuck you

    this is excelent

  • take th emade in the usa sticker off....

oh, and buy a better amp

  • whats that thing over your pickup?

  • It's a "metal" cover that comes stock with the the bass, man (it's actually plastic, I think). Many Ric players remove it, but for me it only took a couple days to get used to that.

  • This is awful, I'm scarred for life!

  • i agree with rushfreek, theres way too much staccato

  • very good ima bassist too ( and a drummer ) I just learned limelight... so yea keep up the good work

  • Good try...too much staccato and some wrong notes. The feel is incorrect as well.

  • Hi Rushfreeek, you're right, it is a good try but...

  • Geeze a shot o' yer Ricky.

  • Very nice job. I can appreciate you taking time out to learn the solo well..including the different fills in between the chorus...awesome...can you post "Donna Lee" by Jaco?

  • Thanks so much for your comment! Well, I also have a video of the Donna Lee theme alone (haven't worked on the solo) at different speeds. Look at my profile and you'll find it (can't post URLs here). Hope it helps!

  • very usefull I wouln't nit pick it, If I had to mention one thing, you don't seem to sustain some notes making it sound a little mechanical, but this may be due to the fact that you were running direct, not cranked up on an amp (or playing with other live musicians to boot) regardless you've created an invaluable teaching tool with this video, kudos!

  • god i love Rickenbackers. how much did that one set you back?

right now im stuck with a DeArmond Pilot 4, saving up for that Rickenbacker, just for the tone.

    good job by the way.

  • Thank you for your comment, man. I bought it last year (new from Sam Ash Miami) and I paid 1600 USD for it, including shipping to my country.

  • awesome job man

  • dont be hard on yourself u sound great! thats a hell of a run!

  • Hey, Greetings from TB.

Can you send me the transcription for this? Or is it for students only? If so, thanks anyway for posting the video.

  • EXCELLENT JOB!! I've been playing Bass for 2 months now, and you have inspired me to learn this song. I have a new Fender Aerodyne P-bass-- any suggestions on how to get your sound dialed in?

  • Thank you for your comment, man! Well, I don't have experience with Aerodynes, but in my opinion, Rickenbackers have a very distinctive tone which is really hard to duplicate. Geddy Lee may have a basic, distinctive tone (of course, thanks to his hands), but anyway he must process his Fender A LOT to get his current tone, something that he didn't need to do that much back in his Ric days (continued).

  • Anyway, my advice is: Use a passive bass with the tone knob fully open, don't scoop your mid frequencies, make sure that your bass is properly setup with the lowest possible action and PLAY HARD. :)

  • sounds really good man

  • great job great song, everyone will nitpick but no one plays perfect with a recording and geddy improvises a lot in his stuff but anywho i thought you played it pretty much dead on keep rockin man

  • Great effort on this tune, but your not playing it consistantly through with the right hand. Too much staccato. I think you improvised the soloing at 3:26 to the end. It was close though. Nice Rick. Keep the rush stuff coming..:)

  • That was really good, awesome job with the bass line to this song. You realize you made a couple mistakes, but big deal. Nothing you can't perfect

  • Thats a Rickenbacker 4001 I think...yea its like 1500...one of the best out there

  • dude idk what bass that is....but its the bass that almost me choose bass over drums....very cool man rush isnt easy stuff on any instrument

  • Hey I really admire your work. This is one of Rush's best. Quick question, and this may sound stupid, but I can't put 2 and 2 together. When you record your bass through the computer, how do you both record yourself playing on camera, and hear the audio from the computer track?? Thanks much

  • Thank you for your comment, man (and thanks everybody, of course!). I have a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum sound card which is very convenient since it has a front panel with plenty of input/output jacks. I'd plug my bass direct to the soundcard, but I don't like the sound that my PC speakers (Cambridge Soundworks 4.1) return, so I prefer to use a cable from my practice amp's line output to the sound card auxiliary input. (continued...)

  • Of course, my bass is plugged to my amp's input jack. My practice amp (a Kustom KBA 30) allows me to hear my performance with a decent sound quality and also sends the signal to my PC. I use Sony SoundForge for recording.

Thank you again! Let me know whenever you feel I may help. BTW, that's a 4003 made in 2006.

  • (I posted my previous comments as a reply to bassguy413. Don't know why they don't appear like that, at least at this moment)

  • I agree with masonruiz. great job but relax asnd loosen up a bit.
