Silent Running has a toggle on/off key. When you are in silent mode you don't show on any radar whether firing or not. Sniping is very, very hard in silent mode as you cannot attach to a surface to stabilize your aim.
Please, eough with the "no sound in space/everything inbetween your gun and you wouldnt conduct sound that well/modern guns dont work in space" arguments. For one, we have little indication whether the suit is rigid or not, but even if it isnt I find that the muffled "thud" your gun makes could be realistic. Second, this is based in the future, so we have little to no idea of how the guns work, but its not a far stretch to believe that engineers could make "space guns".
God ppl complainimng about the sound need to shut up.. seriously.. this is a video game where ur in space suits shooting at other ppl in space, i mean come on..
Something like that. But i beleve it have to have some kind of sensor that detects in a different way than just pure visuals (the visible spectra for humans).
The suits simulate the gunfire, compensating for the lack of sound in space. As a combatant in space you wouldn't want to be denied one of your senses, now would you?
Dude are you dumb they stated in the description that the suit simulates the sound for the soldier. Going into silent mode where your system is put down (you can't hear anything) so you can sneak up on enemies.
Your comment is like seeing someone 50 feet in the air and after he performs it you go up to him and say "No one can do that, theres no way for you to do that!"
uhh, you hear the part about audio simulation files? the suit simulates them to increase situational awareness, as for the sound when he fires when the suit is shut down, that is the sound of the impact of the recoil against the suit, not actual sound in space. think before you start swearing
Sound needs a medium to travel through, be it air or a solid. The soft thud of the weapon you hear when in silent mode is indeed sound. It's just traveling through the user's body. Awesome stuff.
#1: It wouldn't be fun to play a game with no sounds besides hearing yourself inhale and exhale 12309101 times....
#2: The space suit you're wearing has uploaded audio files. Want proof? Watch the video called Escalation. The suit even says "Pre-loading audio simulation files" and BAM! all of a sudden you hear the sounds of your surroundings.... just listen and it makes all sense and don't make up theories or prove the game physically impossible...
Easier on the whole just to say 'to hell with it, it's a game'. And they DO say it's an audio simulation. Perhaps if the suit tracked the flashes of light sent out by the tracer fire? The thrusters are easy enough, you could connect their computer to your sound simulation computer easily enough. Same with your boots hitting things. But other people's gunfire is sort of the part where you start needing to handwave stuff.
Re: Muzzle Flashes, Since a minor explosion is generating the thrust for the bullet I believe some sort of muzzle flash would be visible as that explosion would need to vent somewhere. Think of thrusters for movement. Theoretically you wouldn't even need gunpowder to project the bullets as it's a Zero G environment, a highly pressurized gas would work since there's no air (less drag & friction) and little gravity (pulling the bullet off course) but I digress
cool feature, this game could be another great multi fps if you'll add few more modes and other cool features, after all this whole game is based on cool feature like the Counter Strike admin option "gravity_0"
the recoil of the gun creates vibrations into the suit. The suit then lets the air inside the helmet resonate thus letting some of the vibrations reach your ear, where they are transformed into sound
Yeah, swing and a miss, unfortunately. The gun'd not have a very good contact area, even if you gripped it tightly. Also, unless the suit was totally rigid, the noise'd disapear in the folds. It's why they hang velvet at orchestras. It absorbs the sound wonderfully.
Adding to that, most of the sound of the gunshot comes from the gasses exploding and breaking the sound barrier, etc. Very little of that gets turned into contact with the guy, either way. Just the newton's 3rd effect.
I've only commented because people proposed solutions to the hearing in space thing which were scientifically dubious. I'm perfectly happy with the magic spacesuit idea. It doesn't really compromise suspension of disbelief, as the rest of the game seems pretty accurate.
Vibrations would be transferred from the area of impact to the air within the suit, which would carry it very quickly to the user's ears. It wouldn't have to go through the suit to the ears.
You think that in a space suit... in outer space... with no sound ANYWHERE... you would not be able to detect the sound of your gun vibrating against your suit when you fire it?
I think it would be kind of like the way you can hear a tap dripping or the clock ticking at night because there's no other sound.
You hear the sound of the tap dripping because there's an atmosphere for the ocillations to vibrate in. In space, we're not so fortunate. We might hear the sounds that the insides of the suit makes when it gets squished, etc. But the gunfire, and probably most of the squishing sounds'd be too low to hear. The gunfire particularly, as 99% of the sound from that isn't transmitted through solids.
I would indeed like to know this as well. From what I'm hearing it seems that way. A shame really but with a full campaign it would probably have cost another $40.
People only said there's no sound in space? Well guess what, there aren't any muzzle flashes or tracers in space either. In fact, you can't use just about any conventional weapon out there. Who bother pretending to be realistic at all? Just do what makes the game good, not a half-assed attempt at realism.
The Soviets fired a cannon (I don't recall the caliber, I vaguely remember the number 12) in space on one of their manned spy satellites successfully. Granted, the vibration from the shot nearly ripped the thing in two, but yeah, it's entirely possible to fire bullets in space.
I realize this, but that still won't allow you to have MUZZLE FLASHES or TRACERS so I'm still right. And that still isn't a conventional weapon and it still doesn't create enough oxygen. You need more mass.
No, you fail hard. SoManySkinks is right, combustion weapons really wouldn't work in space- theres too much temperature fluxuation the lubricants would all freeze//boil and the gun would seize up.
The game looks fucking fun, but don't tell him he's wrong just because you don't know -why- he's right.
They have the same issues in deserts. Sand sticking to the lube. Hence the existance of graphite, dust based clearners and lubricants. They're plausible enough. The only issue'd be recoil, but most guns don't actually have all that much. It's why you don't see people getting flung back after being shot.
i read about the recoil, the suit thrusters push back against the recoil, preventing you from flying backwards. however, if you go into the silent mode, the recoil does push you back.
*Nods* Yeah, I'd thought something like that'd be the case. Although the lack of recoil compensation during silent running is pretty cool.
I figured the rifles might use something like gyrojets anyway. Might be able to deal with recoil better when using burts. Hell, I honestly don't think that human's could really do a particularly good job of conducting ground war in space. The training-benefit'd be too small. I'd say drone's'd be the way to do things.
@harlequin2262 You also must remember this is set 40 years into the future. The soldiers' training might be conducted IN space, therefore giving them an understanding of what they're getting into.
This is a possibility, but I just don't think that humans are built for it. If nothing else, true 360 degree warfare'd be hell on the psyche. Training'd be possible, but as I said, you'd need a LOT of training to get someone at an adequate fighting level. 80 basic, this ain't. Adding to that, I imagine that you'd pretty much have a very high fatality rate amongst your casualties.
regarding the temperature in space i bet that any steel made conventional weapon would freeze and on the first or second shoot would just fragment itself,... if it manages too shoot
Temperatures in space can be hotter than on earth because of direct sunlight. In space craft construction how much the metal expands or contracts due to temperature change is important though. Modern space machinery uses a large amount of aluminum and I imaging that the spring components of the modern automatic rifle would be replaced with a gas piston and, of course, there would have to be a different propellant used for the bullet.
Because it's so unbelievable that on a site visited by hundreds of millions of people per day that any of them actually know what they're talking about...
@SSEi02 Yes it is quite unbelievable. It's very hard to believe someone knows what they're talking about especially when their grammar is so poor. Oh and the fact that they've copied directly from Wikipedia.
Also, the lubricants that enable the mechanical aspects of the weapon to work would either freeze or lose cohesion and ball together due to the vast variation in temperature and lack of gravity.
There are ballistic weapons under development and in use that have no mechanical parts at all and are operated solely by electrical triggers. I believe the recorded ROF for one such weapon was 1million rounds per minute, using four barrels. This type of weapon would work in space flawlessly.
This game is the best 20 bucks I've spent. I like to get a kill, shoot an ice gren to mask my retreat, boost then go silent running to hide for my next kill :D
They're considering adding bots, based on the community's input. I've already told them I think they should, and most people agree. Bots may be added in eventually.
Great loaction and graphics, but basically its just another tired old shoot-em-up game. Bang bang.

there actually can be sound in space.
sound are vibrations and the vibrations of the recoil of the gun. let your suit resonate.
the suit lets the air in your helmet resonate thus letting the soundwaves reach your ears.
the enemy fireing can also be sound from their
microphones picked up by the friendlies Uav
Icecold218 2 years ago
Science fail.
Sound travels through vibrations.
But in space, what's there to vibrate? No atmosphere, no real contact.

vibrations of the suit maybe?

Here is something for everyone to think about before saying they cant fire in space:
potassium nitrate in gunpowder contains oxygen ( KNO3 )
10 KNO3 + 3 S + 8 C → 2 K2CO3 + 3 K2SO4 + 6 CO2 + 5 N2
all of these reactions are in a closed environment where the gunpowder is contained behind the bullet to give it kinetic force.

I love the way you've fixed the problem of no sound in space. Very clever!

I love running silent. I do it all the time. I've even mastered a rotation that makes me appear to be a floating corpse.

Love the silent mode. It's a tough way to play but very fun.
