@zosten But it takes a genius to come up with the idea. To do it first. And that's what Steve Vai is. A Musical Genius. And the imitators can never be quite as great as the Innovator.
200 years from now people will be talking about how Vai pushed the limits of the guitar and played with such grace and passion in the same way that modern critics and fans talk about the way Beethoven pushed the boundaries of the pianoforte and piano, and blew the socks off the crowds who were used to the sounds of the rather "non-dynamic" harpsichord.
VAI is a genius composer, musician, AND a wonderfully grounded, gracious human being. I feel honored to know him and his music.
This is one of Steve Vai's very best moments, and, is in fact why this is the ONLY version of "The Murder" I Like. The ethereal ordered "out of tune" 12 tone row that is the guitar polyhamonized is like synths and guitars on "Love secrets" that blew my mind in 1990
There's so much performance instead of good music, I know Vai can do much better than that, if you watch his old performances, they're so better than that strange stuff.
The term shred should not be used for Steve Vai. He can definitely shred but he's way more than that. The man oozes music creativity at it's finest. And you can't argue with that. You're just being ignorant or are extremely jealous if you do.
Steve Vai is a talented musician from a technical standpoint. That being said, he can't make interesting music to save his life. There's already many guitarists who can "shred". In fact there are many who are both technically talents AND can use their talent to make good music. Vai can't do that. He can just jerk off his guitar. What he can do is act like an cocky idiot though, which this video makes clear.
@nurarihyooon You've said it fairly well. Musicians who can play this well are like champion spellers who can't write good poetry to save their lives. Spelling: perfect. Content: blah. Sometimes this amazing talent temporarily appears to be good songwriting--but 10 minutes after viewing you have a hard time remembering ANYTHING you just saw. A sexy violinist, let's see... and a really cute guy in tight pants playing a zillion notes a second. Um...
@nurarihyooon You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. I have literally cried with some of this man’s music. He is way up there in musical expression and artistry, absolute musical embodiment and connection to his instrument, some people are just too dumb to see that; they’re not even instrument players, they’re used to the usual radio stuff. Steve vai isn’t regarded as a legend for for nothing.
the question is: do you prefer a guy who plays only scales from the beginning to the end of an album like rusty cooley or MAB, or a guy who hides his lack of technique behind three notes in an entire show like the major part of bluesmen or a gut like steve vai who is really connected to his guitar and audience?
@guitarbridgecleaner Agreed... this is pretty fucking awful. The guitar is kind of neat, but he both overdoes it and has a SHITTY video to go with it.
Never understood the love for guitarists like Vai... gimmicky, poor writing.
@40sTheme well thats his theme, and fuckloads like it, if you dislike such guitar effects, Which you will NEVER be able to copy, ever. Then G T F O.. !
@Bestbier666 I think foxboy321 put it well (albeit with a bit of grammatical and spelling errata). It's not 'amazing' or even 'cool', just simply annoying and over-flashy, as with most of these 'professional' guitarists that do shows/music like Vai. Sure, Vai can scale and arpeggio better than most, and he can play with effects (which is not that impressive the way he uses it), but he does not write music on the level of, say, Jonny Greenwood, who is not technically 'better' than Vai.
@40sTheme Music is not about who can Write a better song, It's about expressing your passion. People express it in different way's. Some may dislike, Some may like. But it is in no way, About who is better.
@MrApex37 Thank you for writing a clear and well expressed reply. I understand this sentiment, and I did not mean to only say that Vai does not write very good songs. Overall, it is just not good music. I will fully agree that there is subjectivity in any art form, but there is also an underlying objectivity. There is BAD art, and Vai, while most of his work is not that bad, writes some objectively bad music (such as this video). This is not passion, just, for lack of a better word, wankery.
@40sTheme I do agree. I'm just saying it is a form of Music, However the passion may seem small, It is still their to some Degree. But i do agree, It is alot of Wankery for the most part.
@40sTheme what's wrong with wankery? Hell, it's practically all I do on my guitar half the time. And as far as the "objectively bad music" goes, that's technically impossible since NO THERE IS NO UNDERLYING OBJECTIVITY. Look at Eastern and Western music, there is an entirely different tonal sensitivity to each, and both of them have changed over time. And I personally think it's pretty good, maybe not his best but still good clean fun.
@40sTheme Poor writing, the man says. Listen to Alien Love Secrets, I DARE you, and tell me "poor writing." Vai has fun with the guitar, and judging from his sold out shows, so does the audience. He gets bored doing the same thing over and over, so he invents stuff as he goes. Vai, Satriani, Friedman, THESE are the true masters of the sixstring, not whoever the hell is in radio rotation these days
@SarajevoKyoto Satriani's alright. I haven't really heard Friedman. Alien Love Secrets seems like more of the same... Also, do not assume I listen to the radio rotation. And I also wank around a bit on my guitar, but I understand that that does not constitute ACTUAL writing. I often get disagreement to my belief that there is objectivity to art in general, so I don't worry about it, but Vai just isn't very musical. It's the same problem the radio has; there just isn't ART in it.
@40sTheme anybody who played with Frank Zappa is very, very, very musical, you clearly have no idea what you speak of. And judging that your name is derived from an Umphrey's McGee song, and don't get me wrong, they're very talented, it only further shows me your lack of true knowledge about music as a whole.
hes been watching toomuch hedrix doing are you experienced with a flat e string played on the floor with his foot while he waits for a rodie to get him a tuned axe...
well i guess once u get all rich and famous u can play the dumbest things and people will still love it ...ignorance people ignorance get rid of it...
He just straight up raped, violated & tortured that guitar (in a good way) oh && that guitar still manages to stay in tune!! I fucking love Steve... Genius!
i think this was a complete show. he played some seriously good songs the way only he knows BUT! he didn't forgive about the spectacle and the visual part
he may not be playing arpegios or stuff
but he's offering magic and spectacular parts like this video
@AZII5296 He has a great guitar tech and probably changes the necks of "Evo" and "Flo" more than you change your underwear, if you knew anything about music, guitar, and sound you would love this, do you play guitar ? I doubt it. Listen, learn, only then you will understand.
@Kando0615 You gotta be kidding. How is this not nonsense? You play the guitar? Cause if you do and you thought any of that was hard than you must blow at the guitar man. The only thing i found hard about that was how steve vai was able to keep a straight face while doing all that stupid shit. I know he is good at the guitar, believe me, but that was dumb as hell.
@Estevanmusic: I'm with you. the song title is "Dancing in the abyss" Imagine that he's standing on a falling platform in the middle of a black hole, dancing like it's nothing but his favorite hangout. I admit, I won't watch this a million times, but as part of the entire show, and the emotion portrayed, I think it's done nicely. Steve is known for using the guitar for more than just music, but expression. Most people don't have the balls to act like that onstage without fear of people mocking.
Just because he make a few weird numbers dont mean that all the great playing he also do,is obsolete?Say what you want.On a good evening,he is one of the best outthere hands down.
Who cares how weird it is? Vai is one of the most unique and talented musicians out there today. It's not that horrible, it's waaay better than listening to Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers
Naa,man.he's using the Fernandez 401 sustainer and Digitech whammy.I own both and thats wassup, lol. But this is noise,I dont quite understand what he is thinking here,ha,ha.Loony
You dont have to sell me on how amazing Vai is.Ive been a Vai hard since 80's and he is hands down my biggest influence. But what message?
Everything aside this is corney no matter how you slice it and why I still say I miss the 80's 90's Vai.I have always loved and defended Vais stage antics, but this is just way to much.Kill the Guy With The Ball had a much cooler message if thats what we want to call this. But anyway, lol just a little over the top even for him.

It's not that horrible, it's waaay better than listening to Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers

yea like wtf are you guys talking about down there?
steve's just playing harmonics and bending with the whammy bar, theres almost no added effects other than the basic amp distortion
