CGI alone could do nothing to improve the opening scene. There's more to building a house than the individual tools used to build it. The same can be said of a good movie.
Funny that Lucas' own brilliant creation would end up being destroyed by Lucas himself... how ironic is that! If Star Wars is to make new and better movies, like the originals, they need to keep Lucas in a cage outside the set where he can't influence anything.
This was the first movie when it came out right? Why does it say episode IV in the beginning? Did he know that he was going to make prequels or did he just go back to this movie and changed it to IV when the prequels came out?? I don't understand xD
thanks for the upload.... took me a while to find, just wanted the opening scene and about 15 videos before this was parodies, jokes, voice overs, sing alongs, hitler playing darth, darth playing hitler, just show me the opening scene!!!
when Vader first appears, I was like, wtf is that? i remember being 12 years old when i saw the movie for the first time in 1977 and i was freaking out. What the hell is that? its Vader. fuck yeah!
It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galáctic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire´s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy
Two things I thought about while watching this, 1) How I dreamed of being a stormtrooper as a kid and 2) After seeing Ep. 1, I was like "Anakin Skywalker is in there. Old, but a half man and half machine". cool
Out of all the Star Wars films (and Empire is still my favourite of all) this opening scene is my favourite.
The shoot-out between the Rebels and Stormtroopers is my favourtie part of the whole scene, I just feel like I could be apart of it on either side (playing on BFII of this scene is okay, but just doesn't seem as good as seeing it in the film).
It's a few scenes like this, that seems to be missing in the Prequels (granted, TPM had one).
"Please help me Obi-Wan, My debit card is is empty and I'm broke. The REBEL Alliance is crooked and not paying me. Times are hard and the BANK has foreclosed on my home. You must help me."
I have to assume that the Imperial Navy had Interdictor cruisers, or destroyers, in the sector. Thus preventing the blockade runner from making a hyperspace jump?
The beginning still give me the chills, every time I see "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." I get so excited to see the intro and the music :) I love it
It's hard to convey, to a 14 year old kid today, how incredibly enthralling this opening scene, as well as the entire movie, was to a 14 year old boy in 1977 seeing it on the big screen for the first time--an incredible experience. We had never seen anything like it. They don't understand that there is a Before Star Wars, and After Star Wars. Movies would never be the same. I'll never forget the huge lines, and people going to see it over and over again. It was a cultural phenomenum.
@DandAinTac - Yes I was 8 years old the first time I saw this in the summer of 1977. Up until then the cheezy special effects from the "Star Trek" reruns were the only reference to sci-fi that I had. This opening scene just blew me away and I remember hearing other audience members gasping in awe.
@Encom7 i was five, its one of my earliest memories. along with being the only swing dick in my kindergarden class with THE "DARTH VADER" ACTION FIGURE. booyaaah.
@DandAinTac Yeah, I was 10 when I saw it and totally agree about it being unprecedented. It wasn't like any other space movie before that and totally blew everyone away. The thing that bugs me about this redone opening is the appearance of the planet at the bottom of the screen. In the original, Williams had scored it so there is a big note right when the planet appears. In this version the planet appears WAY before the note. Way less impact. I'll bet Williams was ticked off.
@marksmartus2 Thanks for sharing that--I haven't seen any of the modified versions. I totally agree with you. Williams' score was one of the best ever, and it meshed perfectly with the movie. I can't understand why they would change it the way you describe.
@DandAinTac 8 year old kid and queued up for over 2 hours but got in to the cinema... 42 now but never forgot the experience.... pure quality... thanks bud.
@deaddirtycarnie "Holy Trinity"? Just out of curiosity, what are the other two films you would place in this trinity? I have my other favorites, but I have a tough time limiting the best to just three.
@DandAinTac For me (opinion here, no one get all worked up) it's Alien, Blade Runner, Star Wars (the real ones). They influenced genres far beyond science fiction and are still badass movies today.
I don't mind the original improvements made for the special edition....but I HATE that the DVD's now have Anakin in the end as a young man....do one GL...just do one.
@Tim3Po Amen to that! It's hard to believe it's been that long already! I saw this in the theatre when I was 11 years old in 1977. I guess the old saying goes "how time flies when you're having fun!" Star Wars rules!
@UnknownThomasFan1 After watching the original theatrical versions, I have to say that I don't mind the added CGI. The only things I dislike about it is the CGI Jabba in IV, and lazily adding Christensen in as Anakin at the end of Jedi. I don't mind the Sarlacc having a beak, or seeing the Wampa more, and I like how they edited in McDairmid in as the Emperor in Empire.
@TheUnluckyTug02 Agreeing Exclamation: THANK YOU! It is nice to find someone who has formed their own opinion of the movie and is not following the rest of the crowd in nit picking at the small things.
@kingabidor McDiarmid did not play the Emperor in Empire Strikes Back. In 2004, they edited the scene to make McDiarmid speak to Vader through the hologram for continuity's sake. A good edit on their part, I say.

@TheUnluckyTug02 actually Jabba in IV isn't CGI. It is a large group of mette paintings added into the shot using stopmotion.
