She was obviously a very gifted pianist and showed superior technical control in this performance. However, I have my doubts about the wisdom of those who believe the Etudes should always be taken at breakneck speed, with the prize to the one who finishes in the shortest time. In many cases, doing so seriously degrades the musicality of the piece. Listen to Horowitz play this Etude. His speed is much more reasonable (about the speed at which I take it ;)D ), but musicality is not sacrificed
@Chopinzee613 Actually many call Elena Kuschnerova "poet of the piano".. She has her own vision that is more objective than that of Horowitz who is a very fine but ideosyncratic pianist.
Elena played first and second rounds (black-white and rose dress, respectively) and then she was eliminated. She did not take part in the final and thus she received nothing. Actually making it through the two rounds was already a great success because Elena's own professor, Sergei Dorensky, who was in the jury, was against her because he was supporting another of his students. Also other Moscow Conservatory professors in the jury were against her.
No, it was not like this. The professor tried not to let her take part in the competition at all to give way to the other. It was not simply a bias in judgment, it was an attempt to stop her in advance, the usual practice. I am sure it was not tough at all for this professor to do it..
Tood bad she had to play against Berezovsky during the competition. There are many technically proficient pianists alive today that never receive superstar status just because they never won first place at Tchaikovsky or Chopin Competitions...
Surprise .Never heard of her and it is really clever , so well articulated and it sounds like a Chopin idea in style.Ive heard dozens of the etudes recorded her is as fine as any.Zimmerman really young slows down perfectly in places .Pogo played this in comp I wonder if this is on film.Pollini sets the standard but her musicality wins me over .
I like her "powerful" way of playing of this piece. Any problem about her manliness? Well, speaking of testosterone, just listen to her playing of Heroic Polonaises op 53. It is great!!
sorry if you were insulted, but all i meant was that she was just a little to powerful for this particular piece. i believe this etude should be played more softly, reflecting the feminine side of chopin's emotion, in some parts where she was way too powerful.
Oh right its cool lol. Yeah i guess it may have been played a little too powerfully. I think Freddy Kempf's version is too slow though. Lovely etude though.
I think female pianists should have enough testosterone, otherwise they can be easily accused in feminine playing. And, of course, there is always some interpretation freedom, musicians never play exactly in a way we want to hear.
Wonderful peice., Wonderful pianist - put them together and you get outstanding results. Kuschnerova truly is the greatest female pianist around! 5 Stars
i love it

i think that's kind of unfair, but then again, it must have been tough on the teacher because he had to choose between her and another student.

She is a fantastic pianist in all different ways. She is a big inspiration for me and many other pianists.

Heard a second time ... hm, somewhat mechanical. Not bad, but somewhat robotics.

Very fine bass line. Clear play, without being "boring". Dood delays (?) at the right time.

The phrase 'Dood delays' makes me (?) too.

I think that Pollinis musicality is much more sophisticated. But that's only a matter of taste.

why does she have to be it so perfect?
*whimper*
she sets a standard so high. It really sounds very nice!!
i have been trying to learn this piece on my own for two months after grade 8 but now i realize how half baked, and lousy my playing is!!

i envy her fingers SO much
i mean...i've been playing this piece for two weeks now and i'm only like 75% there..

A week is nothing, man, you need to put at least months to get a Chopin Etude good.

Increíble ejecución.Yo creo que ya se debe dejar a un lado el asunto del lado femenino de Chopin. Es un cliché que ya debe terminar.
