I had the pleasure of meeting Mikey Newbury on Hank Cochran's boat in Tn...with Barbara Cochran and some friends from Kansas at the time ...he love to to pick and sing!
Love ALL your music ♥...You are and always will be my most favorite singer/songwriter and you are "responsible " for bringing two hearts together with this song..The Two Step Goes On.... You are always remembered this way ...even though you are gone...R.I.P.Mickey ♥~
RIP to a beautiful man who shared his beautiful soul with us all...through his beautiful gifts...writing, and performing, the true art of story telling. Love you, Mickey.
Seeing Mickey in this video brings back a flood of memories of that wonderful night at the Florabama! I'll never forget Miss Mamie, his mother, in her red cowgirl outfit, the dark, crowded room filled with those of us who adored Mickey! And, of course, Mickey, who I miss so. He was such a special friend of mine. I miss him so and always will.
Mickey continues to be the greatest influence on my music even though he's gone. His legacy will live for ever in the heartsw of his followers and admirers.
Thanks for this wonderful video. I was a singer in a duo back in the '70s, and my partner Sam introduced me to Mickey's music. We did "Apples Dipped in Candy", "Once You've Got'em (You've Always Got the blues)" and many more. I think he is one of the top 5 American contemporary songwriters. I was sorry to hear he passed so soon. Thanks to his family for keeping up the website.
Great Houseboat in the Sky, but it would sure be a quiet Heaven now without him.
One of my few idols, he was a huge influence on me, & a great person to hang out with at Combine Music, way back around 1970! He was an angel even then....
Sweetest man that ever lived! There will never be another to compare to this artist. Spent much time with him playing golf and hanging out. I wish I could call you Mickey, just one more conversation.
Wow! What an extradinary video this is. You are so lucky to have been at this performance. And we are so lucky that you are sharing this with the world.
I think that's the same guitar Waylon Jennings gave Mickey years ago. I saw Mickey "Live" after many many years of wearin out his records. That was the days of Vinyl not CD's mind you. Mickey knew how to say things just right when it came to a man and a woman and how easy it is for things to go wrong. PEACE Mr. Mickey Newbury.
Actually, dad had this commissioned later in life by a guy named Plumber. I'm sure Waylon gave him one at some time, tho i don't remember ever seeing one. This one is still in the family under my care. Many people have asked me why i don't put it on display somewhere safe, but i feel dad would want it to still be played.
When I was 18, I bought Montezuma Hall live album bcause of the poetry on the covers. Played it all nite long for several years, many loves, many storms. Now I'm 51. Mickey died the same year as my wonderful sister. Never got to the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. Rest his personification of cool and deep!!
back when, I saw him open for Carly Simon. This 80s or so "chic" crowd waiting for Carly, Anticipation high on the charts, and this guy comes out with real short hair, in a white T-shirt, sits on a stool and starts strumming a small-ish guitar. He was the act I came to see, and everyone is talking over him. Fortunately I had second row seats in a great hall. But it was strange. Mickey was great and filled the hall with just his voice over the din.
No one has ever been able to write and sing with the heart-touching, haunting beauty of Mickey Newbury. And I can't think of any recordings that compare with his spelllbinding versions of "American Trilogy" and "San Francsico Mabel Joy." Often imitated, never duplicated.
Wow, talk about cinema verite! Thank you so much for sharing. Mickey Newbury is one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. Watching these clips has made me wonder if any of his concerts "back in the day" were ever filmed? What a great DVD that would be!
