@strixq thats the trouble with dumbasses....theyre so dumb they dont even know theyre a dumbass so move on and leave them to wallow in their ignorance
Not to poke fun at either of them, but tell me that here, Steve Earle doesn't kinda look a little like, or at least partially remind you of...........an overweight Joaquin Phoenix? hehehe. Again, NO disrespect is meant towards either of them. Steve is an astounding musician, and Phoenix is (or was, he quit, right?) a great actor.
I suspect that sliver of hope it might also have something to do with why Steve got clean and Townes didn't... though there is not really a lot of hope on The Hard Way, when Steve was nearing his bottom. His most recent album is very hopeful.
Great song. I've been a fan of his for many years right from when his first video "someday" came out. I saw him front row on the Copperhead Road tour as well. The thing that amazes me about him is he just seems to get better and better...
i remember saying to many goodbyes to to many good guys who shoulda been able to say there goodbyes to theres they hold dear, and i dont think ill ever get over there goodbyes. Give Peace A Chance People.
Nah, it is cool if that what brought someone to Steve for the first time. But toolish if their interest in his music stops there... and for going on about the show. (The worst are the folks who quote Big Lebowski incessantly on the video for Townes' Dead Flowers cover.)
fantastic song and fantasticly performed but i hate the way he sings all the lines really early, earlier than they're ment to be. it takes the effect away from the song because its a brilliant song
one of the last great troubadours. what a song, so brave, the way it stares into the void of regret. nostalgia without sentimentality, just grief, still raw after all these years.

@tailesill4 so very true, that! This song makes me miss my ex so much. Even after all these years. I dont know if its him i miss or just who we were back then. Leaving him was probably the smartest thing i ever did, and it was also the stupidest.
Tell me, & be honest, doesn't he kinda resemble Joaquin Phoenix in the movie, "Walk the Line", a little bit? Steve is a little heavier of course, but anyway, I just see a kind of resemblance. & it's not just the black shirt & guitar.
Just broke up with my wife. Even though we are both angry with each other, I recognize my part in the pain. This song really moves me, and I wish I could share it with her to show her how sorry I am for that.
I love this song. It was on a mix some bartender friends gave me, and I didn't know who this was then. But the lyrical content was right on time- moved in with friends 4 states away after a breakup. Almost fell over when I heard this.
This guy is just so underrated it's disgusting. "Talent" wise? There are few that can touch him. It's kinda sad how drugs & prison messed up his career. There was a time (the 80's) he was poised as the new of "Bruce Springsteen". Critics praised him (Copperhead Road) & expected huge success for him. In any event, he is just utterly & phenomenally magnificent. Maybe he didn't achieve the anticipated success, but he still has a loyal following. Wish he'd come to town. I'de love 2 see him.
That`s true but there`s a reason Steve started playing Dreadnoughts. If you can physically cope with a Dreadnought that`d be my recommendation. Steve had to change to a smaller bodied guitar. He`d still be playing Dreadnoughts if he could. : )
@Mouldytone why did he have to stop playing the dreanoughts? Ive got a dc16gte, martins are beautiful guitars. Would love a smaller body 000 or something eventually.
I love this song . I love guitar town also. Most of all I love Steve Earl . I've seen him twice here in Canada. Back in the drug yrs. Wow . Great show.!! I've started to but a few vids on YouTube . Stop by if ya can . ;)
As I understand it, Steve had a Martin D-18S (12, slot head dreadnought) which he had a luthier copy for reasons I don`t know. This is the copy of a Martin D-18S but I`m sorry I can`t remember the name of the fella who made it and can`t read the name on the headstock. FWIW Steve now finds the dreadnought body too deep to be comfortable to play so now favours Martin M model guitars which have thinner bodies.
Work out how much you can afford to spend and go play all the guitars you like the look of in that price range. If you`re checking out Martins always check the real cash price as for some reason Martins usually are advertised at prices up to 40% more than their actual sale price. Good Luck
@Mouldytone In this video, Steve is playing a Gibson Roy Smeck model...which is a 12 fret guitar based on their Jumbo body. The Roy Smeck model was originally a lap/Hawaiin guitar with no frets...and one of Jackson Browne's favorite guitars. Santa Cruz guitars built Steve a replica of the 12 fret, slot head D-18S, which you may have seen. I've had the opportunity to speak guitars with Steve Earle on a couple occasions...but it's still his writing that amazes me.
@mcaguitars Thanks for solving the 'what guitar is that?' riddle! Using that info I found an interview with Steve where he says the Roy Smeck is a Gibson "Re-Issue" but he also mentions the name of John Dillon who was the luthier who made his Martin D-18S copy. He also mentions his Santa-Cruz 12 Fretter. I`ve put a link to the interview in the ifo section if you`re interested. Thanks Again
@Mouldytone Yes, most of the Smeck's you see these days are the re-issues. Many of the originals have been converted from Hawaiian guitars to fretted instruments...and many didn't survive the transition. The re-issues are okay, but don't hold a candle to the original pre-war models. I've played quite a few originals...and built some replicas myself. I'd forgotten about the guitar John Dillon built, thanks.
@mcaguitars Thanks for the additional info Roy. I hadn`t considered that the Hawaiin conversions weren`t always successful. By the way, you make beautiful guitars. Your 13 Fret Lucas Model is my favourite but all the models are stunning. All the best.
have been a Steve Earle devotee for over 20 yrs, we grew up 40 miles from each other in Texas, as recovering addict, i thank God for giving him another chance at life...incredible....
Wonderful, just plain wonderful! That said, it's hard to imagine why a artist like this is just passed over for radio play. To enjoy Steve or others like him it's up to you. Local radio stations don't get this, I have no idea where they get their ratings numbers from I haven't listen to music stations in years, most of my friends feel the same. Keep up the wonderful work and well keep listening!
What really annoys the hell out of me, is how real talent like this, is so totally under appreciated today. I mean, why this man, isn't a mega-super star is totally beyond me. What passes for "Super Stars" today is an utter joke. Doesn't anybody appreciate real music anymore? Well, obviously some (but not enough) of us do. I think it's partly to blame on schools for cutting music & band, etc out of the curriculum to make room for homosexual sensitivity & anti-religion training/indoctrination.
Yes,what you point out is true,2071.But the critical acclaim Earle enjoys as a prodigious lyricist almost ensures him the kind of iconic posthumous place in music fame secured by the likes of Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams. The Critics will not forget Steve.People will discover his greatness when he's gone.
The oversight was not intentional. One might even have hearkened back to such influences as Guthrie or W.C.Handy in the interest of full inclusion.I had in mind, brevity.
@gjc82071 i'm sorry but I take offense to what you said about homosexual sensitivity (what does that even mean?) As a gay man I love LOVE LOVE music, that is my life and this song as an addict and alcoholic touches my heart so,If me as a human being can FEEL songs and beautiful music then what are you refering to? I know music trust me....so please use your words wisely you dont speak for everyone. This song makes me cry for some reason, let me enjoy it .
God bless you, my friend..what you are and how you live has nothing to do with your great appreciation for a talent that, in my lifetime, has been untouched by another else...take care.
ive met steve a few times and being a songwriter myself i asked him whats the best song hes ever wrote he said goodbye i said yes but can you just answe before you go he said GOODBYE then i realised !.Amazing talent cool guy god bless you stevie
I'm afraid our man wouldn't say that about himself. He has too much character to say nothing less than Townes is the best songwriter of all time.
But that's Steve.
I'm here to tell you very few can play the acoustic, combine songwriting, and sheer emotion like Mr. Steve Earle. A living legend to be sure.
I'll listen to all arguments about Dylan, Springsteen , Van Zandt, Prine, Cash, Haggard,.line em up,.Mr. Earle has closed the gap. He's bordering on All-time, even though he'd never say.
I heard Emmylou Harris sing this song first, and knew it was a Steve Earle song by just hearing him count in at the beginning. She makes it a beautiful song, he sings it and breaks your heart.
Song per song, I'd make the argument that Steve Earle is the best songwriter. Its a stretch- I know. But he's closing the distance between he and Dylan and Springsteen.
With Someday playing on my yellow plastic walkman I hitchhiked across Eastern Canada listening to Guitar town back over 20 years ago. I knew he was the man back then.
i was 15 when this album came out in 95 i knew it was his 'comeback' cd. i was at first, disappointed when it was all acoustic. but turned out to be one of my all time favorite albums.. this happens to be my favorite song off the cd. this guy is a genius. took the music world too long to finally take this man serious. saw him twice in concert, met him too. he spelled my name wrong lol steve rocks always
this man is a genius and is probebly one of the best singers in the world. He is singing this song whit feelings no other singer can compare it with. his guitarplaying and also his singing are faboulus . This absolutely wonderful and grateful man should get a lot more attention for his songs and his voice.
I've listened to this video a thousand times and it never gets old. There is just something about it, that grabs a hold of you. Great Great tune.......
And before some ******* clowns decide this is giving away free music and must be removed - I also play this guitar style, been meaning to check out SE for some time, now after watching this I'm ordering two CDs.
People who live in relatively remote places don't hear variety on radio and won't find much in a music shop. Listening to music via my internet connection is how I find out what I want.
@allan1147 right there with you. I live where there are plenty of radio stations available, but radio is dead, and no it doesn't matter if you listen to classic rock, Classic country or true folk music. the reality is the stations have a set number of tunes they play over and over and over. Youtube is a god send, though the corporate idiots whine & things disappear, yet usually another fan will post what they've taken off.
@steele917 Yep I live in DFW Texas. Just junk on the radio. Thanks god for You Tube. Sometimes i just clicks links and see what comes up. Clear Chanel and Belo SUCK
Message to Steve by your brothers football friend,,Pls listen to molly mmc122 cover your song~~what a duet this would make~another guitar towne 'shorty"terry
I don't think they gathered the best songwriters of his generation yet, but when the time comes I'm sure he will be there in the top together with all his friends. Until then we just need to spread the word!
He must be the most underated songwriter of his generation. Suppose that happens when your not a "Yes" man. Truly an amazing talent. Good Songs have emotion, Hot or Cold emotion, doesnt really matter. S Earle, is poetic
hot darn it..i wanna freaking learn this song in my guitar....i hate being a damn beginner at playing guitars..everything is still..."complicated"..i'll get there though..i just need to tackle smaller songs first
i loved emmylou's version of this song, but i didn't realize that steve earle wrote it. i'm afraid i came to his talent rather late...he wrote God is God for joan baez, and that is a great song.
Could anyone tell me what style of picking Steve plays? Or what it's based around? I can't finger pick very well and I would love to play this song, so it's either learn a style to adapt or watch this video a million times and teach myself. Badly.
style of fingerpicking? the same kind I use...LOL...without a pick and pick around with your first three fingers. it's synchopation and timing that makes it come off great. good luck.
It's basic flat-picking. Steve uses a G chord a lot, which is why most of his songs are capo'd up -in this case, 5th fret, using G, D, Em & C chord forms (1-4-5 progression in the key of G) He goes back and forth between the C/D chords, or C/D/G, rather than D/C/GG and adds spice with the relative minor chord (Em in the key of G). He's also alternating the notes on the 2nd string for melody.
If you watch Steve playing Townes van Zandt's song "If I needed you" on u tube you get a good idea of his right hand style. It used to be called a "rocking base" style. you can see his thumb rocking between the 6th and fourth strings. You keep this going while moving any or all of the other fingers, I think Steve just uses his index. Any way keep, playing! every day!!
Gorgeous rendition of a gorgeous song. Thanks for posting it! BTW why did the version with Steve and Emmylou get pulled? That one was even better - I'd love to see it back!
Great song. You can sure here Townes Van Zandt licks in this song. It reinforces the influence Townes and other Great Texas Singer/Songwriters had on Steve Earl at a young age. The way he plays the guitar in this song is right out their book. Beautifully done.
Love you steve E. always have and always will. Just a fan

The oversight was not intentional. One might even have hearkened back to such influences as Guthrie or W.C.Handy in the interest of full inclusion.I had in mind, brevity.

One of my favorite songs by Earle. Better than Dylan, yes, IMO. Right up there with Lightfoot.

She makes it a beautiful song, he sings it and breaks your heart.
cowgirlkiki 2 years ago
Song per song, I'd make the argument that Steve Earle is the best songwriter. Its a stretch- I know. But he's closing the distance between he and Dylan and Springsteen.
With Someday playing on my yellow plastic walkman I hitchhiked across Eastern Canada listening to Guitar town back over 20 years ago. I knew he was the man back then.
dundeeroad 2 years ago 3
Steve himself gave that title to Townes Van Zandt. He said he'd stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say it to his face.
I have to wedge John Prine in that songwriter list, too ...

i was 15 when this album came out in 95 i knew it was his 'comeback' cd. i was at first, disappointed when it was all acoustic. but turned out to be one of my all time favorite albums.. this happens to be my favorite song off the cd. this guy is a genius. took the music world too long to finally take this man serious. saw him twice in concert, met him too. he spelled my name wrong lol steve rocks always

this man is a genius and is probebly one of the best singers in the world. He is singing this song whit feelings no other singer can compare it with. his guitarplaying and also his singing are faboulus . This absolutely wonderful and grateful man should get a lot more attention for his songs and his voice.
Keep up with the singing!!!

And before some ******* clowns decide this is giving away free music and must be removed - I also play this guitar style, been meaning to check out SE for some time, now after watching this I'm ordering two CDs.
People who live in relatively remote places don't hear variety on radio and won't find much in a music shop. Listening to music via my internet connection is how I find out what I want.
allan1147 2 years ago 9
@allan1147 right there with you. I live where there are plenty of radio stations available, but radio is dead, and no it doesn't matter if you listen to classic rock, Classic country or true folk music. the reality is the stations have a set number of tunes they play over and over and over. Youtube is a god send, though the corporate idiots whine & things disappear, yet usually another fan will post what they've taken off.

I don't think they gathered the best songwriters of his generation yet, but when the time comes I'm sure he will be there in the top together with all his friends. Until then we just need to spread the word!
JannoKlufs 2 years ago 3
He must be the most underated songwriter of his generation. Suppose that happens when your not a "Yes" man. Truly an amazing talent. Good Songs have emotion, Hot or Cold emotion, doesnt really matter. S Earle, is poetic

the picking is not that easy. Steve's uses hammers on between G and G4, and does the same for D7(sus2?)/F# and D6/F# and most of the other chords.
Chords out there will only give you the basic which feels rather unsatisfying after you have listen to this very fine piece of music.
Apart from that, it is a fairly standard alternative thumb picking
After a couple of weeks it should feel natural. He uses it on a wealth of other songs so it really is worthy to learn his picking style.

@buckyk4tt Thanks brother for taking the time to explain! Love the song and though I cant really play that well im learning this! : )

i loved emmylou's version of this song, but i didn't realize that steve earle wrote it. i'm afraid i came to his talent rather late...he wrote God is God for joan baez, and that is a great song.
babaradio 2 years ago
Could anyone tell me what style of picking Steve plays? Or what it's based around? I can't finger pick very well and I would love to play this song, so it's either learn a style to adapt or watch this video a million times and teach myself. Badly.
modi0perandi 2 years ago
style of fingerpicking? the same kind I use...LOL...without a pick and pick around with your first three fingers. it's synchopation and timing that makes it come off great. good luck.
babaradio 2 years ago
It's basic flat-picking. Steve uses a G chord a lot, which is why most of his songs are capo'd up -in this case, 5th fret, using G, D, Em & C chord forms (1-4-5 progression in the key of G) He goes back and forth between the C/D chords, or C/D/G, rather than D/C/GG and adds spice with the relative minor chord (Em in the key of G). He's also alternating the notes on the 2nd string for melody.
syncbox 2 years ago
If you watch Steve playing Townes van Zandt's song "If I needed you" on u tube you get a good idea of his right hand style. It used to be called a "rocking base" style. you can see his thumb rocking between the 6th and fourth strings. You keep this going while moving any or all of the other fingers, I think Steve just uses his index. Any way keep, playing! every day!!

Great song. You can sure here Townes Van Zandt licks in this song. It reinforces the influence Townes and other Great Texas Singer/Songwriters had on Steve Earl at a young age. The way he plays the guitar in this song is right out their book. Beautifully done.
