  • I hate that people, even fans, have portrayed Elliott as the "sad" guy in music. "Everything he plays is so sad," people say. "What a beautifully sorrowful song."

Listen to his music. He has a lot more to offer than just depressing lyrics. He conveyed all sorts of emotion, on both sides of the spectrum, through his lyrics and his music. He was a brilliant musician, and saying he wrote "depressing" music does him absolutely no justice.

RIP Elliott, your music got me through a lot in my life.

  • @Zippidyduda A lot of his music is very sweet, but undeniably, desperately sad. I think he probably never intended to write a 'sad song' in all of his short life, but he was in pain and unblocked, so it came across.

  • good song, elliot's the shit..

  • "What is a poet? An unhappy man who hides deep anguish in his heart, but whose lips are so formed that when the sigh and cry passes through them, it sounds like lovely music" - Soren Kierkegaard, Either/Or

  • This is a very special display of human expression. hopefully it lives on forever.

  • We only just scratched the surface of what he had to give. What a loss. Still. After all this time.

  • @Heathathnasoodua This guy gets it

  • hello fellow e.smith fans. come check out Bryan Yurgelis and the Winter Shakers! best regards

  • he always makes me so sad.

  • forget all about the pressure of days....

  • his voice haunts me...

  • There are girls who listen to this :) And if we learned anything from Good Will Hunting, it's that we could find someone who will truly understand us.

  • i cant believe he's dead...

  • I wish I could meet a girl who has the same enthusiasm for the same music I do. It's so hard when no one knows him. :(

  • @Josephaaron27 yeah that sucks dude i found mine keep looking man its worth the wait

  • @Josephaaron27 what's not to like? Elliott Smith is amazing. it's sad that a lot of girls don't know about him, his writing was poetic.

  • @Josephaaron27 Not just a girl... I mean anyone. Now all my friends listen to dub step shit, Elliott is incredibly unknown in the UK. Most underrated musician of all time - although I bet in a few years time his music will somehow just explode and everyone will be listening to him. Its sad that if it happened he wouldn't know :'(

  • phyco neighbours is also a human condition.Eliot Smith is calm.

  • @joebstarsurfer I got some of them. Elliott Smith is the embodiement of beauty thruogh music.

  • mind-blowingly beautiful- if there is a word like that. If not, I'll just stick with: gyönyörű :)

  • why would poeple dislike this song ? this takes time to make and people come to hate? WOW . SMH.

  • If I were God, Elliott would not have died.

  • probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard...

  • perfection.

  • Not my comment. YouTube hack? I hope not....,

  • The best chorus evarrr

  • awesome video. live in a bathroom, watching elliott twist a shopping bag somewhere.

don't wanna sound too faggy, though, lol. went through a hardcore elliott phase a few years back, still love him but i don't put him on much anymore. time will do that.

love the piercing he sported here, too. haha.

  • Mikesnow232, please check the artist called Homestate. I believe you will really like his music. Especially the song "Hundred". And the songs "Kings of the Woods" , "Eyeline".

  • Hey muffinman, I'm here for Elliott. If Joe was that good I'd have heard him by now.

  • great song, check out joseph arthur, great musician. check out his album vacancy and take it from there.

  • Beautiful person.

  • His voice is like a drug.

  • So sad. So talented. His life and music is absolutely tortured and tragic. So special.

  • I feel lonely and emotional when I listen to Elliott..It's like entering my own world every time...

  • @placebofever Something is crying inside me...

  • How could someone not like this?

  • This song just made my teen years tolerable.

  • Comment removed

  • cant watch this cant watch him wanna save him wanna save myself

  • Comment removed

  • Hauntingly beautiful

  • Loneliness is a human condition. although I get depressed a lot, I don't hope to ever find someone who will truly understand me. thus, I try to love myself for who I am, and just go with the flow. solitude, one could say, is beautiful. and this kind of raw music really makes me feel that way. I'm constantly on the look out for more music like this, so if you have any suggestions please let me know. Also, if there are any other soul searchers out there, you should look up "June by Genry Gene"

  • @mikesnow232 You might like Nick Drake if you're a fan. Nick is more technically talented but I like Elliott a lot more for his melodies and lyrics.

  • @PwnZoneification The songs on X/O are far more technical than what Nick Drake did. They both died before their full potential was realized but it's bold to say Nick Drake was more talented. Older doesn't mean better.

  • @ddazska I've never heard anyone refer to Elliott as "Virtuoso" in technical playing talent. So I've heard Drake and Elliott and I really, really prefer Elliott but I say Nick was better with a guitar, you say he isn't, so I'm not sure how settle this.

I love them both but Elliott more since he's done a lot more stuff and I find Nicks stuff fell a little flat some times while Elliott's was always good.

  • @PwnZoneification theres some elliott stuff that would blow your mind guitar wise if you get into more of his albums, ive heard all the nick drake stuff, he was good, but he used odd tunings to make it easier for him to play the challenging parts, its not as tough when your doing that

  • Comment removed

  • @mikesnow232 look up daniel johnston.

  • @mikesnow232 nick drake if you have never heard of him. very very good alone music. cant even say how much it has helped me in my lonely little life

  • @mikesnow232 I would definatly recomend Nick Drake if you havent listened to him already

  • @mikesnow232 bon iver

  • @mikesnow232

lately i've been listening mostly Jeff Buckley's "Grace" and Interpol's "Turn on the bright lights". oh and John Frusciante's "To record only water for ten days". well, and of course Elliott. so you might like those records

  • @mikesnow232 Take a look at Nick Drake's discography

  • @mikesnow232 I'll drink alone to that

  • ill always come back to this.

  • this makes me reflect on my own life. ::sob::

  • fucking well done mate - very cool

  • best song ever written

  • @youtoldmetube i second that, i considered myself an intermediate/expert till i started playing and singing his songs, it wast then it dawned on me truly how little i knew... He is the Mozart or the Hendrix of acoustic, the muting, huge reaches, melodic whatever the hell theyre called, its astonishing the skill he displayed. and I for one need his music.

  • this song will forever haunt my soul. love it.

  • Elliott will always be alive to those of us who love him. R.I.P., gentle soul.

  • every time i play my "shuffle" list and Elliott comes up, it becomes Elliott for the rest of the night...

  • @Heathathnasoodua i totally know what you mean .)

  • @Heathathnasoodua I've been only listening to him for about 3 months straight...

  • it's sad to watch this video and know that he is no longer alive. sad thought indeed...

  • @xoticfcuk damn crazy comments. Hope you get better. You should learn about trauma based mind control, as I think your comments touch upon it in a weird way

  • @xoticfcuk (selfmutilation to satisfy a distorted world view), and I think we all suffer from it to an extent, and not even close to the fullest extent possible, however.

  • soldiers get wounded by bullets and bombs. Theyre attacked by an enemy outside themselves. One over which they have no control. They struggle and fight to defeat the enemy and in turn keep themselves alive. What does one do when this battle is taking place within themself? When it seems the soul is at odds with itself. When the bullets and bombs are shot and planted by the person themself.

  • It reminds me of a person who self mutilates, cuts themself, burns themself or cuts off their own air supply. we look at them and wonder why they do this, yet to that person it is fully justifiable and creates a good result. Nevertheless when that pleasure of pain they seek disipates they are left with wounds, holes an cuts as reminders of their diseased mind. I have shot myself with the worst of bullets. I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger so many times my eyes can barely open.

  • They remain constantly closed to protect themselves from the disgusting reality around them. the reality which the mind behind the being has created single handedly. I look at myself and see gashes and scars, a man ripped into pieces and barely alive. Most others look at me and see a normal man, but i see fragmented pieces at odds with eachother. I struggle more and more to keep myself in check, to unite the pieces and be me again. but i find this to be a difficult task.

  • Ive gradually torn myself so much that the pieces are too many to piece easily, and the pain of failure has lowered my energy to a point which i cannot bring myself to put in the work for repiecing myself. ive shot the bullets through the heads and hearts of others only to boomarang it back to myself. the boomerang is my conscience trying to make me stop the rampage at any cost, it hopes that if i feel enough pain i will see that its not in my own selfish best interest to keep shooting others.

  • ive disconnected with my one true friend. ive parted ways with him and forgotten his name. i hope he remembers me and i know he does, but i believe he looks down at me with disgust and pity. he wonders how one can fall apart so heavily while he himself stays so perfect. All i can do is hope, hope that i can unite my heart mind and soul into the perfection that it started as.

  • This song is breathtaking, as for the guy that made the comment about him being dead, some people are simply too shallow to see past their own insecurities and into the mind of a truly beautiful person, instead of yelling at him, maybe we should feel sorry that he ha to go through life with his ignorant, appearantly homophobic, thoughts.

  • this is... my life is now complete.

  • Okay, I'm getting aggavated. I'v been drinking coffee and this is what happens. I start writing like "The Devil and Daniel Webster". How can the world NOT deserve his music. He made it for people. That's the world, people and everything in it. Again, I'm gonna say this. On the night of Jan. 31, 2003 at the Henry Fonda Theater Elliott Smith said, "They're just songs." That's a verbatim quote. He knew that. He wrote and performed them. Beautiful and Poetic as they are; merely songs. Boyce.

  • @DjangosBurntFingers - Maybe now, wherever he is, he knows they are much, much more than "just songs" - for a whole lot of people.

    Thanks again, Elliot.

  • I'm gonna check out "Greed Machine"s video cus' new bands deserve a look see. Plus, I like the name. Cool name for a band. Everyone should give them a look. If they are good, spread the word. If not, well, just remain silent and Let It Be. Just some advice from a old cus'.

  • I like Lil Wayne. And Elliott Smith also happens to be my favorite singer/songwriter since the days of "Good Will Hunting". I like Outkast a lot. I'v seen them around Atlanta. Very cool.

OH, I'm a white guy. The stuff people say in the comment section just bends my brain sometimes. Firstly, people need to learn to write a complete sentence. After that, a paragraph. Once that is accomplished a thesis is not impossible. Then you can get a Masters degree. A Masters might actually get you a job.

  • Everyone who disliked this probably likes lil wayne

  • HE IS SO HOT

  • Elliott Smith still inspires us all!

Check out the Skywalker Appreciation Society on youtube, myspace and facebook :)

  • gentle genius. you rest in peace.

  • Hey everyone we are a band that has been inspired by Elliot Smith and we just put out a new song and our recording equipment isn't always the best but I wanted to see what some elliot smith fans would think. If you search Greed machine it will be the first link. Check it out if you want and let us know what you think.

  • @0scuro i mean "again"

  • yep. another song to make you remember you are human agsin.

  • It touches you.......somewhere deep in your soul.

  • he references dr suesse, oh the things you can think.

  • thank you good sir for making the music you did.

  • I get goosebumps listening to Elliott... They always come even though i've listened to each of his tracks hundreds of times over.

  • te amo Elliott Smith <3 gracias por tu música, que alimenta todos los días mis polillas emocionales.

  • its really sad once you realize its a song written by a bottle booze, singing to him.

  • @id300129 i think it's freakin amazing.

  • It's like he is talking to me. Like he wrote this song for me.

Every word resonates through me and makes me want to cry with relief, he is saying everything I want to say in a way I'd never be able to and seems to make everything clear.

I hope he will 'keep them still' forever.

  • Between the Bars, Angeles. Songs people will listen to in a hundred years.

  • love you (and i was gonna say mate) but that is testament to his music, and the way everyone who loves him feels they know him, thanks for existing Elliot my life and music wouldnt be the same without you x

  • Just got this on vinyl.. so happy I did. Had to ride 2 miles in the freezing cold at 5 in the morning but well worth it

  • First time... today? Oh gosh I heard about him when I was eleven and liked him, had him on my mp3 when I was twelve and loved him and now I'm going to have him on my new iPod and I ADORE him! I never had a real favorite musician before except my dad.

  • Why does the good guys aways die first? I heard of this man for the first time today, and I'm in love with this amazing song. Real music. It's sad he had to die.

  • @farbsucks

Well, Steven thought differently didn't he?

  • @farbsucks no. he meant for everyone to hear his music. it connects with so many people. the world more than deserves his music, at the very, very least, it gets people feeling again

  • @mglenwright09 @TheKenTerry he probably did. I'm not speaking for Mr. Smith. It's just the way i feel. It simply feels too surreal compared to the most things I encounter in my life. His music is just much more than music. Anyways, don't mind some stupid shit someone writes on youtube.

  • @farbsucks oh i didn't my friend. and i know exactly what you mean :)

  • @farbsucks :-D :-D :-D :-D

  • @farbsucks So... How's that dead d|ck of his taste?

  • @DevinDevinBarnett hows being a dumb fuck feel? respect the dead you piece of shit at very least he is a great musician. what are you?

  • @farbsucks its a bit hypnotizing o.O i found one of his songs by accident on a sound finder app on ipod... and couldnt stop listening to it XD

  • @farbsucks false

  • Enough to bring out strong emotions in anyone. The guy was insanely talented. Stop debating his death it negates the very thing his music was meant for. Lets all just live in peace. R.I.P elliott.

  • I still can't wrap my head around how he died. Crazy shit.

  • When I hear this song I just have to stop wherever I am, sit down, close my eyes and just drink it all in. It just like releases all my stress, like I have someone telling me I'm special in some kind of way. It oddly, makes me feel appreciated. Love you Elliott. See you when my time comes.

  • Did you hear the cover of this song by De la montagne ? It's really good !

  • not only do I buy his cd's as well as songs on itunes but even though I own them I still love to watch his videos on youtube just to watch him play, him a guitar and a mic how music was meant to be heard not some lady gaga bullshit

  • insanely simon & garfunkel inspired, very good tune ;)

  • stunning audio heartbreak

  • @LetsDancee2 Drug addicts OD and if they kill themselves they do it while under the influence. I think its pretty naive to belief that a drug addict not only killed himself sober but stabbed himself in the chest.....twice. There was also no motive. His girlfriend claimed they had a fight and she locked herself in the bathroom. I smell loads of bullshit. Doesnt matter really, he's dead none the less.

  • @BlackBrainRevenant he was misusing his medication and it made him progressively more paranoid as he further misused it, he didnt know it was the drugs and he didnt know what to do so he ended his life. i wont reply to your disagreement, this is what happened, take it or leave it

  • @xn6 he was not on any drugs when he passed away. read the toxicology reports. read the police reports. why would jennifer chiba take out the knife? how could he have stabbed himself repeatedly in the chest (with no hesitation marks, per the autopsy report) and then still had the strength to walk up to jennifer? why don't you research these things before you speak about them like you know something.

  • @LetsDancee2 He would, but I wouldn't.

  • Amazing...beautiful....

  • So great.

  • I listen to this drunk and i feel comforted as well as sad in my dark times...thats the beauty of his music

  • This video truly leaves me speechless. To see him move and see the emotion in his face as well as hearing it in his words is such a moving experience. Truly one of the finest artists the world has ever seen. Lost far before his time. R.I.P Elliott. You've changed all of our lives.

  • He went out by stabbing himself in the heart whilst sober... whoa

  • Elliot Smith. you've helped so many people and your music is so good it hurts.

    remember.

    everybody care everybody understands

  • His music leaves scars and shivers down your spine ♥ wish that he was still alive

  • best thing ive ever seen, ever, love you man

  • he sounds like bam margera kind of.

  • It is a sad thing being an alcoholic.

  • The Civil Wars did justice to this song

  • if someone sing that to me, i'd marry him

  • I think it's ironic that all of the best, most talented musicians that could possibly alter the music industry forever, die young.

  • I know these lyrics by heart~

  • i can't decide if this song makes me happy or sad. it's the saddest song i've ever heard and expresses so much pain; but the 3rd and 4th (after the first chorus) verses are so fucking beautiful it's unreal - "drink up baby, look at the stars/i'll kiss you again, between the bars". RIP Elliott, xo.

  • perfect

  • love this? me too. davesplaylist.co.uk

  • Imagine all the music from this legend we have missed out on in the past 8 years. This man was the soundtrack to my life.

  • is he the neil young's grandson???

    love this music!

  • This song may be the saddest song I've ever heard. I can hear so much pain and sadness I can't stop the tears. I have felt a lot of pain in my life but nowhere near as much as this great man. This is such a depressingly beautiful song with so much emotion in it. It makes me so sad thinking about how haunted and depressed he was but he still saw the beauty in the world. Elliot you will always be loved and missed greatly.

  • rest in peace.

  • Y U ARGUE FOAR NO REASON?

  • beyler bu şarkının adı ne

  • @jesusjerkoffistrulyg

shut the fuck up, no respect but expect everything. that sounds like jealousy.

  • @rvmm2 @Sledulus You just got trolled up the ass. Congrats.

  • @jesusjerkoffistrulyg

Dude show some fucking respect i'm not going to waste my time with this at least my hero never made enemies like your gay 2pac :P Go fuck your mum and her spliff sized nob!
