I think the big difference nowadays is that the bling is the big motivator, like cats get into the game to get a chain, whereas the old school didn't place much emphasis on that lifestyle, it was more of a by-product of the profession. The direction of Rap Music shifted greatly when N.W.A came out in (1988 this should be the year).1986.87.88 this is considered the Golden Era of Hip Hop.Hip Hop peaked in 1988 with artist like Rakim,Biz Markie,Big Daddy Kane,MC Lyte ect..But here on the East Coast NWA isn't mentioned in the Golden Era because that Era is Golden due to the quality of production and creative lyrics.Due to N.W.A.s success Gangsta Rap began to develop into a fully blown entity from that point on...

Look, it's not like they were ever going to be able to get EVERY relevant Hip Hop artist in the same place at the same time. Big L, Big Pun, ODB, Aaliyah, Left Eye and Proof were all still alive at the time (1998). Big L was the only one who bothered to show up though. Proof wasn't really on the national seen at the time. ODB might have been there, I know some of the Wu cats were there, but I've never seen a comprehensive list of all of the folks in the picture. Nas, Ice Cube, Snoop, Dr Dre, Outkast, Jay Z, Ice T, Guru and Dj Premier were all notable no-shows. Still, the important/impressive thing is who DID show up
