i know every1 can say who wasnt there but got-damn where the fuck was any of the 9! wu members!? big project neway. if this shit was done nowadays all you'd see in the pic is lil boys makin the pic look fucked up wit all the flash n bling they got 2 show how much money they makin.
@wavvymassta agreed, i'm surprised wu wasn't there... To your point about the new school kids with all the bling; I notice some emcees in the video are rockin plenty chains. I think the big difference nowadays is that the bling is the big motivator, like cats get into the game to get a chain, whereas the old school didn't place much emphasis on that lifestyle, it was more of a by-product of the profession. I always want to find out more about hip hop, and I'm curious to know when it all changed
The direction of Rap Music shifted greatly when N.W.A came out in (1988 this should be the year).1986.87.88 this is considered the Golden Era of Hip Hop.Hip Hop peaked in 1988 with artist like Rakim,Biz Markie,Big Daddy Kane,MC Lyte ect..But here on the East Coast NWA isn't mentioned in the Golden Era because that Era is Golden due to the quality of production and creative lyrics.Due to N.W.A.s success Gangsta Rap began to develop into a fully blown entity from that point on...
Pt-2. Puff Daddy is responsible for ushering in the drinks, shiny suits and materialism. When he introduced B.I.G to the world.Shortly after B.I.G's first album dropped it began to take full effect. So,with N.W.A.'s success with Gangsta Rap in 1988 and Puff Daddy success with his materialistic messages from 1994 - present,we have "Gangstas that will do what ever it takes to get the paper".And this is exactly what the message is and has been in Rap Music since.
1988 is the Golden Era of Hip Hop.Due to Quality of production and creative lyrics. But from 89-99 the trend carried on very strong.1993 to 99 witnessed the slickest and toughest Hip Hop Production in the history of the game. With DJ Premeire (beats) Gang Starr,Pete Rock,Diamond D,Wu Tang Mob Deep,Group Home ect..2000- present there were still touch cutz to come out but each yr to the present it began to die down more and more.
@jayufoon its always gone be people missing....them dudes mightve been invited and decided not to come. or had business elsewhere. but who am I kidding. dudes always gone ask the "how they not gone have..." question whenever theres a meeting of great artists.
Although we are amazed that the many legends of hip hop got together to take this legendary photograph the real impact will be felt when we are old and gray. The younger generation will wish they experieced what we had.
@bwanieman123 7 months ago, but oh well...pause a 5:34 then look at fat joe (right in the middle blue tee and look straigh up L has got a black hat on with a checkered top)
This is one hell of a living room picture.I was born in 1982 so Iam glad to say I seen all of these artist in thier prime and know what real hip-hop is all about.
@bmore1625 I was born in 89 and I took it upon myself to sift through all the garbage that was pushed into my face growing up and FOUND OUT what real hip-hop was all about.
Man... so many of the comments in this post seem to be focused on who wasn't in the picture. Look, it's not like they were ever going to be able to get EVERY relevant Hip Hop artist in the same place at the same time. Yes, it bugs me that Premo, KRS, Chuck D, Dr Dre and Outkast didn't bother to show up. But, if you get over yourself and take a step back and look at who did show up, you realize how impressive it is that they did manage to get 70%-80% of the most important Hip Hop icons in the pic
Shame 2pac, Biggie, Big L, Big Pun, Scot LA Rock, Big DC, ODB, Aaliyah, Left Eye, Eazy E, Proof and others R.I.P all had 2 pass away man it woulda made the picture greater!..i didnt see nas, ice cube, snoop, dre, jayz doee on this but they was probably there!..great respect doee for RUN at the end! Peace
Big L, Big Pun, ODB, Aaliyah, Left Eye and Proof were all still alive at the time (1998). Big L was the only one who bothered to show up though. Proof wasn't really on the national seen at the time. ODB might have been there, I know some of the Wu cats were there, but I've never seen a comprehensive list of all of the folks in the picture. Nas, Ice Cube, Snoop, Dr Dre, Outkast, Jay Z, Ice T, Guru and Dj Premier were all notable no-shows. Still, the important/impressive thing is who DID show up
@Freshhhhh1982 - Don't you think it's emblematic of Hip Hop that people immediately start looking at what's not present, as opposed to what was accomplished? No matter what they did, they were never going to get everyone. Are there important people missing? Yes. Are there people present who probably don't deserve to be? Yes. Did they still manage to convene an amazing cross-section of Hip Hop for a great tribute/moment? Absolutely. Heads need to check themselves, cynicism is not a virtue.
No, the photo was taken on September 29, 1998 and Big L is part of the photo. Therefor he is part of the video as well but it's impossible to spot him, because the camera doesn't zoom where he stood.
I know my Don Cartagena the original J.O.S.E. all of that, I'm just saying, just cause he's rocking big chains on speed boats in miami now as opposed to conehead hoodies on a stoop doesn't means he's whack. He changed his style up, but he still says some serious shit.
I guarantee you everyone mentioned who wasn't there received the memo and just decided not to go for whatever reason. There's just no way with every other Hip-Hop legend there that they didn't know it was goin on. I wish I still had the magazine.
man you'll never see anything like this today with all the watered down hip hop out now. fucking turds like shit ross, flies, soulja girl, gay spot boyz, dem franchize hoes, 50% no sense at all, gay-unit, afag, lil gayne, etc can't measure up! they've done nothing for hip hop excpet infest it with doo doo stained drawls!
I miss a lot of them... more from the west snoop, Dre. And what about people like Daddy or even will smith?... but GREAT the picture. Grear Slick Rick, great Mos Def, great Busta...
this could never happen everyday. hip hop is not divided by coasts any more-its divided by people. if they did something like this nowadays ,each rapper would be dissin other rappers there to their own camera man-hip hop is too jerry springer nowadays. big up the artists with actual talent tho-and not the 80% of it filled with gansta wannabe rappers with ice and an athletic build. real music will live on forever.
