  • worth watching this video.

  • Sankofa has the best coffee in DC, bar none, and I've become a regular there. You can find Gerima in there every now and again, he's more than happy to talk to you about just about anything. I had had a couple of conversations with him and had no idea he was an acclaimed director until recently. I've been playing catch-up. Great interview.

  • @theDrewid DC huh? Does this city exhibit a strong black community? I imagine so. I'm asking because I plan to move there next Fall for grad school. Please share your experiences about living there. Currently I live in Atlanta and am so ready to leave the South. This city in general is very vapid and lacks any true depth.

  • @TRESBELA i'd say there is a very strong black community here, definitely, and it's also a diverse black community, so there are the more capitalistically-minded black people here, but also the more earthy, wholistic folks (which is more where i lie on the spectrum) and everyone in between. there are a wealth of things to do to get involved in bettering your community (activism, volunteering, art, etc.). it's not perfect though, there is a lot of poverty here and systemic obstacles

  • @TRESBELA but i think that that's what really exciting to me about DC, there's a lot of potential to make real changes and make DC's black & hispanic populations even more prosperous (w/o gentrification). So, I'd say DC is the place to be if you're interested in community issues.

  • He is speaking the TRUTH. Really like this guy.

  • what a strong and empowering Brother and teacher!

  • he is a serious guy

  • I love his style. Always loved stories so true childhood was idylic pets, nature games good times playing in the grass. Tell me a story : )

  • yehh, I really satisfied by ur work, Prof.. U are really a true asset for my mother land country- Ethiopia!

  • Wow!

  • Mr Haile Geerima: I had the chance to enjoy and appreaciate Teza: it is really a perfect film: perfect actors , perfect pictures and landscapes, perfect lyrics and "traditional popular songs":The film just is a "painting of that time" period. Thanks Mr Gerima, proud to be Ethiopian!

  • very intelligent and makes lots of sense. I believe art is an expression of reality in creative way. Adressing most important things in short but powerfull system. That where most holly wood movies doesnot make sense.

  • Awesome!

  • If anyone needs a copy of this interview in text, let me know!

    Great interview!

  • I had the opportunity to meet Haile Gerima in person! He is very influential and I am glad he directed Sankofa. Sankofa immensely affects every person who sees it. This film is a must-see! It definitely opens eyes.

  • I do appreciate you, proud and wise Ethiopian. Actually to be Ethiopian means to be confident ,proud and respectful .Haile Gerima is one of the rare real people who live up to their principles and do it by the dictates of his conscience and objective realty. Finding your voice, helping other to find his voice. I am fed up with fabrication of false black history by the Europeans and americans who only produce what the white audience wants to hear, not what is the fact and reality.

  • He never kept his promise to pay the actors and crew of Sankofa and he has made over $50 million.

  • Who are you exactly? What proof do you have for this allegation

  • so what !!!! it was a good dam!!!!!!!! movie i am from the south i saw it on the RBG channel the movie was FIRE!!!!

  • 30 minutes of wisdom from a fellow Ethiopian !

  • Makes me proud to have the last name Gerima xD!!!!

  • Genius!!!!

  • I wish I knew him in my earlier years. I used to think like him. What a difference listening to a person like him can make. He defiantly invigorates what is dying in most of us-cultivating the inner self in lieu of our ancestors no matter what.

  • What he answer on interview is bomb with hard confidence. Finally she is highly convinced by his words that come direct his brain flooded her views.High talented professor.

  • his shop has the best food

  • He is my new hero. Honest and tells it like it is.

  • Thank you Mr Gerima- you made happy and even more poud to be Ethiopia (as I already was to be that). What a man you are..what a speech.. If the fil /movie £Teza" is yours, I am wondering when we will be able tosee it in Euopre- Rceently it has been presented in Italy (Venice) andit had a great success!!

  • This Ethiopian is a credit to all peoples who see themselves as black and African.

I saw Sankofa brilliant film, I also bought 500 years later an excellent film and thought provoking.

  • What a man! Ethiopian with a gut. I am proud of you man.

  • You're an inspiration to all of us Mr. Gerima.

  • all i can say is wow.

  • so true, so true.

  • I just downloaded this interview. I loved it.

  • What a powerful interview.

  • Amazing man! He makes me proud to be Ethiopian.

  • I was lucky enough to see him speak in VCU as a gust speaker for the black history month.

  • His humility is impressive...very inspiring

  • What an interview......i remember watching Mr. Girma talking about film on 120 tv show in Addis when I was a kid. It has greatly influenced how I watch movies and even the world. I would love to study under him. What a man!

  • I am the first to comment --what a honor --Haile Gerima is the living Legend. He himself is more interesting than his historical movie like Sankofa. It is amazing to see how eloquent he speaks and how deep he thinks. Most of all Halie is like a proud serpent , who fights the Dragon, inside the belly of a Dragon.--I wonder if anybody knows if there is a biography book about this enigmatic man--I know there are many books who write about his works.
