My sensei competed in Karate during this time and he said to me that it was supposed to be a "non or light contact" rules, but they still go at it!!!! the only thing they avoid was to KO somebody because you could get disqualified. But cuts in the face and lips, broken ribs, fingers, arms were things you normally see in this kind of competition.

I competed as a junior in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan back then, and your sensei is correct:). You could blast your opponent's body without worrying about disqualification. You could also make solid head contact beyond the area covered by a catcher's mask. Twice I scored points for drilling my opponents in the back of the head, full-contact, with a backfist. I came through these tournaments with bloody lips,  black eyes, bruised ribs and much pride:) --

I should add that this was BEFORE safety equipment became mandatory. It was optional, at least in the Midwest, until about 1976-77 --
