I feel lucky to have been his friend, and to have had the chance to perform with him. We played the Iowa City Jazz Festival in 1999, and it was a memorable performance.

He was a warm, generous friend, and the kind of musician that kicks your ass and makes you play at your very best.

Max, rest in peace. I will miss you!
