"The US" hasn't traditionally seen Latinos as a different race, hence the fact that it has never been against the law to marry. Caucasian is a broad racial group. Only recently as militant latinos (mostly Mexican Americans and Mexicans) in the US (legal and illegal) have taken to identifying as non"white" and more recently "indigenous". Cubans and Puerto Ricans usually identify as "white" or "black". My point was merely that the US Census uses "hispanic" nonracially.

Why do people feel a need to pronounce certain words with a thick Mexican accent while speaking without an accent most of the time? We don't do this when we refer to Paris or Istanbul, we pronounce those words in the English speaking way. Politicians do the same thing with Missouri, Nevada, and Nebraska- trying to pronounce them the local way but they don't even try to pronounce Maryland, Georgia, or the Carolinas like locals do.
