I was a part of the RERP program in 1999, giving design specs to do a massive upgrade. My initial recommendation was to utilize the GE90, at the time, GE had a 15 year commitment to continually improve the engine making more thrust and use less fuel. My Idea was on the tables for final review. Te only reason it was Scrapped was due to cost. The additional thrust easily offset the Engines weight difference froth CF6-80C2, and required less fuel to operate. Upfront cost killed the GE90 on the C5M.
