The August 2007 issue of Scientific American Magazine contains an article on page 82 that addresses some of the issues raised in this video. It shows the advantages of using perennial crops vs. annuals, the current norm.
It makes environmental sense, but not economic, as the farmers would no longer have to buy seed, fertilizer, fuel for tilling, etc.,which is why it will not happen under current government policy. just not profitable enough for their corporate contributors. Sad, but true!
Cool...buy local food when you can, good idea. Now about oil, lets see...everything in your home is made from it (appliances, etc), your car is made from it, your shoes are made from it, and on and on and on...So what do we do???
So what the fuck do you want me to do? Grow a fucking orange tree in my backyard so i can save the world from the hassle of getting them from florida?
So this is not taking into account the energy it takes for me to drive my SUV down to the farmer's market nearly 4 times farther away than my local market 3-4 times a month to buy local produce. Surely every household in America doing this would save energy amirite?
very good video - run away global capitalism is not only unfair, dirty and socially divisive but it is not capable of adapting itself to our needs in time to avoid an oil dry up - only THEN we will get localisation we need now and the CSA farmers will, as owners of the food supply -will finally be in charge.. roll on a greener and more localised world.. power from the roots up and not from the rotten fruit down !
@ B4: And then the world stops technological innovation for 50 years, then the same thing grows up because of need to advance, then people like you make us go backwards again.
please look to the positives in this argument as any amount of careful study will prove that local food is best all round... importing food by boat is ok, will be better when they add sails to the boats again - whereas importing soft fruit and easily grown salad by plane is a quick way to add millions of unnecessary tonnes of co2 to the atmosphere - we have to take some personal responsibility for our choices!
great vid, good animation... imagine the agricultural devastation that will arise from a failure to find alternative enery sources before global crude peaks.

It appears that you've already gone backwards.

Nicely done. If you'd like more information and pretty good background to these claims, check Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma".
