He didn't want the words heard clearly because Top of the Pops was remixing it to turn down the volume of the music. This actually a funny story: It turns out this UK tv show required their performers to play using playback, Kurt and them dudes wanted to play their music, do their stuff, but the producers denied so they decided to play this joke on both the producers and themselves, and, I'd say, the song itself, which Kurt had grown tired of. Damn I miss them...
