  • Lol who is this god person anyway

  • To all the haters: Adams never intended for all the editions of the story to be exactly the same. None of them are supposed to be identical, due to the chaotic nature of the franchise.

  • I love this movie, and this version of the theme is good.

  • In my opinion, one of the worst movies of all time. It had two good points, Stephen Fry and the theme tune. The rest of it was an abomination, was so disappointed they raped the story.

  • 5 people must have panicked.

  • @demon3070

Yup, Stephen Fry. Absolute legend =]

  • Very underrated movie. It reminded me of Galaxy Quest a lot (another of my fave sci-fi comedies), and that helps a fair bit as well.

  • i prefer this version of the guide than the button version described in the book

  • The books where the best in the galaxy. Bigger rating then 42! (If you have read the books you would see why i said that)

  • 5 people are vogons

  • One of the best intros ever. That Banjo is so <3333333333333333

  • Why the hell does it say don't panic on the BACK cover?!

  • @DarthJawaProductions None of the previous versions ever said it didn't.

  • @edmundog True. You don't really expect it though. Although I suppose thats the whole idea behind the Hitchhiker's Guide...

  • I though the movie and TV series were both very good.

  • @Costerguy1234556 the original Radio show is far better

  • @ManicMalcolm I have yet to give a listen through the radio show but I'm gonna start listening to it tomorrow.

  • MY FAVORITE FILM NO LESS

  • @20meerkat I liked it, and I disagree with your points.

  • this the most epic voyage song ever

  • Better known to the people of this planet as Wikipedia on an iPad.

  • @sweetfreek I wouldn't have said so, Wikipedia can be edited by anyone - The Guide has researchers. I think there's still a place for this in todays world - when we get flexible OLED screens ;)

  • I don't think the failure of the movie was the fault of Douglas' script (which he never finished before his death) but with bad execution of the script after his death. The thing that slaps you in the face if you have an idea and the PoV gun are genius, but Mos Deff was dreadful as Ford mumbling through his lines & delivering none of the humour. The guide animations were no better than web flash, Stephen Moore's whale was WAY better than Bailey's, they chickened out over the non-existance of God

  • Love the books, really like the movie, but nothing beats the radioseries. I'm listening to them at my Iphone atm and I constantly burst out laughing in the subway, with alot of frightened looks from my fellow passengers as a result x)

  • @biggles1111 AMEN!

  • Fantastic movie. Highly underated.

  • @Bugsyboy333 Agreed... wonder why they made ford black though...

  • @beriadan

I could not care less whether Adams wrote the whole thing or not, this movie is terrible, at least in light of the rest of hitchhiker's brand. O no, wait, there is that Mostly Harmless book which sucks too. You see, Adams was amazing, but he made mistakes. Mostly Harmless and this movie are his biggest ones in my opinion. Also, I reeeaaaally doubt Adams would've completely omitted the jaguar joke at the beginning of the book.

  • If you had read the books, NEVER, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES would you say it was the best movie ever.

So sue me if I'm a vogon, the movie killed Hitchhiker's Guide eternally, which is a shame, because now nobody remembers the BBC version.

  • You wanker. Any TRUE fan of Adams knows that the only thing consistent with HGttG is inconsistency. ADAMS HIMSELF POINTS THIS OUT. The radio play came first, and the books took some notable departures from the scripts (Which themselves have been rewritten by him a few dozen times.) The Infocom game was different. Your precious BBC series was VERY inconsistent with the books.

So this movie IS inherently true to the spirit of Douglas Adams. You diss this film, you can't call yourself a fan.

  • 4 people are vogons.

  • Current views: 66,666 LOLOLOLOLOL

  • i wish they would make a second one.

  • Every single version of the story(books, radio series, BBC series, movie) is absolutely great. Douglas Adams was the best writer ever!

  • I always thought the emblem on the book was a weird bird with three feathers on its head. Just today I looked at it and saw a fucking thumb.

    How dumber can you get?

  • @PivotMario I thought it was a penis with three testicles. Is that dumber? :D

  • The books are quite different from the radio series, which were the funniest if you ask me. But I digress. I for one love this movie!

  • Too bad Douglass Adams died before they could make sequels :( at least we have the books

  • 1:20 The simbol of men are pink???xD

God (or the planet God )bless Adams!!!!

  • this movie was sooooooooooooooooooooo of the book but stilll a rilly good movie

  • where god went wrong. LMFAO!

  • whats the songs name with the guitar?

  • @Celticborne "The Journey of the Sorcerer" by the Eagles.

    (And it's a banjo, not a guitar.)

  • DON'T PANIC

  • thats not the intro, its just showing the book for the first time. the real intro with title is at the start.

  • i like that they got stephen fry to do this

  • LOVE the MUSIC!!! LOVE IT !!! or you'll be ex-ter-min-ated.

    but still, DON'T PANIC

  • one of the best books ever writen and still a great movie

  • Where can I get this song :(

  • Does Peter Jones (the original voice of the book) do the first line? It sounds like it.

  • @Kay10en No, it's Stephen Fry.

  • Man. I'm in doubt between this, Lord of the rings and Star Wars as the best movie. I simply can't choose one

  • It was cool :D

  • It IS the best movie of all time... Douglas Adams IS a legend!

  • brilliant film it was beter than the book apart from marvin who was brill but didnt get as many lines

  • TUNE

  • zaphod's just this guy, you know?

  • The greatest movie ever. No doubt.

  • YOU ZARKIN FROOD!!!!

  • 42!!!

  • I'm glad they included the banjo part of the music from the tv series, it gives great atmosphere!

  • "Journey of the Sorceror", by Eagles. Check out the original tune, if you will.. it's a sweet ride. :)

  • I read the first book back in the late 80s, and shortly after that I played the video game, watched the TV series, finished the books and then listened to the radio series. After first viewing the movie left me with mixed feelings, but now I find myself enjoying it more and more, and wishing there would be a sequel.

  • 42!

  • to althose who dont like the movie then to bad, this is by douglas, this is his reinvention of the series. its not a adaption but a remake in my opinion

  • I think the film was meant to be an homage to the books notorious continuity record. That way they could get away with putting in planet vogshpere and the point of view gun

  • You have it just right. Adams was well aware of just how his work had transmogrified in translation from radio to book to movie, and I'm pretty sure he was perfectly happy with the discrepancies.. maybe even reveled in them...

    lol

  • Don't Panic I Kknow Where My Towel Is

There should be black t shirts with those words in big Red friendly letters on it.

  • it was OK, but disappointing, considering that the books are 5(/6) of the greatest works of literature of the 20th century.

  • I found it all right and enjoyable, though some passages had been dumbed down a bit, and the dialogue was nowhere near the quality of the radio play, even considering that they are different media.

  • Douglas would have loved this film, it totally surpassed the series and came alive, the wife thought it was utter rubbish, no imagination !!

  • are you kidding? where did the entire middle of the movie come from? it was good to see the characters on the big screen but this wasn't the movie the fans wanted

  • I found it an absolute pleasure to watch and loved all of it, just my opinion nothing more. What do you think the director got wrong ? What did the fans want to see ? I suppose for me i loved the series and watched all episodes as a child and the film totally surpassed the series, i personally thought the transition was excellent.

  • Main concerns were Ford being wrong and the middle of the movie. Trillian and Zaphod were technically more correct compared to the BBC version but Ford isn't Mos Def, not ever. Nor bald. It IS a good movie but not the one the fans wanted, the whole detour to meet Havala Kuvala was made up. Things like that. I respect your opinion.

  • Where did the entire middle part of the movie come from?

    Douglas Adams wrote it...

And I'm not entirely sure what fans actually wanted. If it was too faithful then people would have complained, but people would have complained if it deviated from the radio series/ book.

Well, it is one of those classic stories that can never really be surpassed in a movie form...

  • Part of the "Hitchhiker's Guide" deal is that -none- of the versions (radio, BBC-TV, movie) are exactly alike. Adams even mentioned this... feature.. in the preface to the omnibus edition of the books.

  • Also, although I think not intentionally, the radio series, the book, the film and the TV series all had slightly different spelling of the title.

  • 1:21 ,where god when wrong, some more of god wrongs, and who is this god person anywhey...

  • forty two

  • man, i can appreciate both, who said we need to pick favorites?

  • DON'T PANIC!

  • The discussion reminds me of what had been said (partly by the author Mr. Ende himself) after the release of the "Neverending story" movie in comparison to the original book (and the fact that a book forces the reader to visualize fantastic worlds by himself).

Things that the HGTTG movie added to my reading experience (and the low budget TV series - I didn't grow up with the radio play):

The mimic of the vogon captain (e.g when reading his poems) and the revitalization of the second earth.

  • i thought the film was good, but steven fry's bits were the only bits that captured the essence of douglas adams.

  • You do realize that the script was written by Adams? Everything from the movie went across his desk? He was involved in the move production from day one until he died (which was after most of it had been filmed). If you have a beef with the movie, you have a beef with Adams' writing style.

  • You're wrong.

The screenplay was begun by Adams, and completed by Garth Jennings and Karey Kirkpatrick after Adams's death in 2001.

  • Jennings and Kirkpatrick could have achieved the same end in much less time by simply urinating into Adam's grave.

  • @beriadan51 I think you need to check your timeline bro. Douglas Adams died in 2001 and this movie was filmed in 2004. Douglas Adams wrote the first few drafts of the script of the movie but beyond that he had nothing to do with the production of the film. btw i really enjoyed the movie.

  • @bahruth Bear in mind a film may spend years in post production. Case in point LOTR was shot all at once and cut into 3 parts released a yaer apart. So its possible that adams had a hand in it.

  • @beriadan51 Well, actually, filming began in 2004, but he did approve the final script.

  • @beriadan51 Your are extremly right... R.I.P. for the genius

  • @beriadan51 yes, but he ruined his own work. the book and tv show were much better than the movie. It was a decent movie for people who don't know the story as much, but many devout fans of the book were very dissappointed.

  • @beriadan51

    Great point.

  • @beriadan51 allot of people dont realise that the genius that was DA understood all three genres (tv, radio and film) and never intended for the movie to be a retelling of exactly the same story!

Love the film but was a little dissapointed by some of the casting choices.... and Zaphod's voice was just not quite "sexy" enough to work although his style was bang on.

  • @beriadan51 Sorry but if others have already said this, but they did NOT start filming before he died. It wasn't even commissioned until, what, 2002/3? It had several rewrites.

  • @beriadan51 And after his death every part of the movie he wasnt involved in was run past his widow for her approval. She was his proof reader and editor. If there was anyone besides Adams himself who knew his work, it would be her.

  • @beriadan51 so, is that why they had to leave it hanging, (as in zaphod doesnt get his second head back)?

  • Comment removed

  • Is the theme music from this video on the soundtrack for the movie? please respond.

  • Yeah, its called "The Sorcerer's Journey'

  • Actually, it's called "Journey of the Sorcerer".

  • The movie soundtrack only has the short, orchestral version of the track that you heard on this clip. If you track down the original version of "Journey Of The Sorcerer" by The Eagles, it is a 6 minute-long epic piece!

  • Some people criticise this film because it's different in ways from the books, radio and TV series. But THAT's the point of Hitchhiker's! It changes in every incarnation!

Even Douglas Adams himself said "The only thing consistent about Hitchhiker's is Inconsistency",

So when you think about this as just yet another retelling of the story, this movie is actually pretty awesome.

  • It is indeed a great movie. But the original radio series and the following books were better.

  • i like the banjo and the trumpets, they really make this song

  • The best intro ever and I love the music, really sets the film up although not so sure it could have been as good as it should but still fun and more imagative than 90% of hollywood rubbish . perhaps should have been in 3 parts or a more cohesive vision from Douglus, although we can't blame him as he didn't get to finish it. I miss him, a great talent, and wish he had gone easier on the gym (I go to the gym and realise the personal trainer pushed him way to hard for his age) what a loss

  • truly epic intro.

  • belgium, man, belgium!

  • How dare you sir!

  • tulingdrome! swut!

  • BURMA!

  • Who dares to utter such a disgusting word such as BELGIUM!

You should focus your efforts on IMPORTANT MATTERS:

Such as- what do you get if you multiply 9 times 5?

  • 42? I must use that as an answer to many a question in the future.

  • 1x42?

  • Actually, it's 6 by 9, not 5 by 9.

  • find Eagles - Journey of a Sorcerer...

    sounds familiar? :)

  • its the name of the song, suprised they sound similar? its the same song

  • The books were better. They always are.

  • Frood, this was really hoopy !

  • You know, it wasn't as good as the BBC series. Or the radio show. But still, I got a soft spot for this movie. Their heart was in the right place.

  • There are 42,000 views! (give or take)

  • Love this movie! The intro music is beautiful/cool too ^^

  • If its the original author its okay, Since it really can say that this is what the author had intended.

But what i am talking about is the newest movie that countinues to ad extra stuf and ignore the books.

  • Oh you mean the extra stuff that Adams wrote specifically for the movie?

    Yeah, toolbag.

  • Adams had been dead for 4 years when this movie came out.

He hadstarted to negosiate plans for a movie with disney, but thats that.

he may have started to write a screenplay but it was Re-written after his death.

So taking all that into accunt Adams had NOTHING to do with the movie.

  • actually, he wrote most of the screenplay, but died before it was completely finished, its the same case as with his book, The salmon of Doubt

  • I love how many people here seem to think that the movie was 'based on a book'. The book didn't come first, people.

  • Please, for God's sake, Check Wikipedia.

  • Please yourself. Anyone what knows anything knows that the radio show came first, and the book was based on that.

  • 42.

    -The One, The Only, S0VIETNINJA

  • i love this movie!

i recently read the book for the first time and, get this, i STILL like the movie! i found it very similar, and the fact they took alot of the actual writing and put it in is great! i think they tried to keep it very close to the book, so i'm happy.

oh and the opening to the dark knight is better, but this is still cool!

  • well this is the opening to the american one which was crap!!! the british one (the origianal) was better by far!!!

  • I disagree. And so does Douglas Adams. The TV series was his least favorite version, mainly due to two things. First, they didn't work within their budget at all, leaving everything looking very cheap, and second, they adhered too slavishly to the radio scripts.

  • unfortunately the tv-show can run circles around this piece of shit of an excuse for a movie.

But in a way that should have been predicted British humor and American humor are two separate thing and doesn´t translate very well into one another.

  • The pacing on the TV show is terrible. They paid no attention to how to make audio jokes work visually. I know that what you want is for every new version of the story to slavishly follow the previous version, but that's not how it goes.

  • allow me to respon with a qoute from the creator of the earthsea stories

I wonder if the people who made the film of The Lord of the Rings had ended it with Frodo putting on the Ring and ruling happily ever after, and then claimed that that was what Tolkien "intended..."

As crappy or good as a story might be in the book, thats how the story was written and thats what you should stick to, not making all kinds of ekstra material that doesn´t fit in anywhere like the movie did.

  • A - Doesn't really answer what I said.

B - There was a HHGG radio show before there was a book. They took a lot of stuff out and added a lot of extra stuff. I assume you hate the books?

C - Douglas Adams came up with all the extra stuff himself. I think we can safely claim that it's what he intended since he's the one that did it.

  • The book was better :)

  • i need a towel

  • well don't panic while you try to get one

  • i just love the solo guitar at the beginning

  • banjo

  • banjos rock!

  • ridiculously hard to play

  • dunno why, but it always reminds me of 'GAME OVER'

  • Awsome song

  • greatest song ever

  • The song is "Journey of a Sorceror", by The Eagles

  • No its by the eagles i forgot what the song is called.

  • What's This song called?

Isnt it a led zeppelin song?

  • i love every kind of hhgttg aparition:books, movie, theater, bath towel, lp, radio, tv...

  • The movie was great but in comparison to the book and the radio series, inferior.

  • Ya know this movies was great. I don't care what anyone says. Don't get me wrong, the tv series kicked ass too, but in my book, they are equal. The movie might have more of the randomness vibe to it.

  • the movie sucked balls compared to the series. the music is still nice though.

    The Answer is 42!!!!!!!!!

  • TV series/movie/etc all has the same basic plot,. silly. :P

  • I'm sorry, but the 'plot' of the movie has bits from the TV/radio series but then goes completely off track. For one thing, Vogsphere has already been deserted by the Vogons in the originals. Then, there're a load of added characters and supposed plot which completely ignores the original plot and suddenly ends up at the end of the first book. For no apparent reason.

  • Just think of it as a new chapter in the book, I liked how it went in its own direction.

  • As a rule, don't try to apply any previous versions of the Guide to the movie, or even compare in plot any versions to any others at all, for that matter. They are in fact, *supposed* to contradict each other. Try to appreciate the movie for what it is, and not judge it next to the (vastly superior) other versions.

  • I was just pointing out the difference. I realise all the versions are contradictory, but still feel that, due to large amounts of editing of the portion of the script Adams wrote, it is a huge disappointment.

  • I do agree that the film would be vastly superior to it's actual form if they had kept more of DNA's stuff in it.

  • It's nice to hear someone say this. I've tried SO many times to get through this version, and I never can because it's so different. I really need to keep your advice in mind. After all, it's ALL great, even if it's not the same.

  • i love this film

  • I like the HHG in all its forms. One definate advantage to Mr Adams making alterations to each incarnation.

  • TV series is better.

  • Agreed. Much better.

  • I gotta watch this movie right away

    bye!

  • Great music

  • I LOVE this movie. This movie is why I went and bought the books. I even loved Mos Def's role. And then I read the books, and I loved them more than if I'd gone in cold. I can understand why those who read the books first would hate it, but count me as a HGGthemoviePhile.

  • and wow good pic quaulity...sme the sound is a bit quiet

  • it kinda aint the real intro...coz the title was dne earlier during so long and thnx for all the fish in the dolphin sequence...

they shudda kept the title out until this prt

  • what eagles album is "journey of the sorcerer"?

  • 4th studio album, One of These nights

  • Better intro then the older series, but I think that the older series is better then the movie because it is much more like the book. However, the book itself is the best

  • And Douglas Adams wrote all of them. He liked having each version to be slightly different in someway.

  • has the theme tune got a name, and wat is it
