~Must have recorded w/a mic? cos the key clicks drown out the sounds.
This machine is very impressive, not many can compare to its sound quality, forget the TR 505/707 ,R5/R8[Superior edit/programability], RX15etc HR16, DR550.... this one has PUNCH & WARMTH!
~UNFORTUNATELY THIS VID SABOTAGES THE MACHINES INTEGRITY
My dad's friend gave me a yamaha rx15 for free!!! It's awesome because I just decided I want to start producing for my career and I keep getting crazy deals on music machines.
i love this rx more than my linn lm1 , the ability
to mix different degrees of shuffle realtime
and do pitched flams and full enveloppes kicks
any drummachines butt , you get a lot of mileage out of it by the synthesis parameters , funny the gate times for each pad also apply to any external module driven by its midi out
Hi There everyone... YES I have just listed the RX5 Drum machine on ebay last night 22 July 09. No Reserve 99 Cents Seller: ricochet@au ... Good LUck,,, She's a beauty ! ! !
I am still using an RX5 and have not used anything else at home since they came out in 1987. When my first one was stolen 2 years ago, I bought another. The thing is about these is the ability to write time signatures and tempo changes that you cannot do with most other equipment including many of the 'top' software programs. I use this as a rhythm template for almost anything I do in my studio. Never bettered in my opinion.
I still have an RX5 in my studio along with an RX7. The trick to this device was the sound card modules you could use to load new sounds. I have been able to bend sounds on this machine into any sound made by any other machine (includin g the Roland 808 sub bass). I started with the RX15 back in the day and used to rock it live on a thousand watt dj system. This unit is great for studio production if put it through the right effects and know how to edit the keys!
if you like that you should get the elektron machine drum. similar sound great functionality and the software is upgradable. also there's a sampling function available on other models.
I have one of these. Spent years programming the dam thing. I like the toms and cymbals but not the snare and kick. I used to use my Roland TR-707 for those sounds. I also used to have a Yamaha RX-7. Pretty bad. Oh, and I still have my DX-7 keyboard.
Thanks for the demo ... I just received my RX5 today and thge first thing I noticed is a 60 cycle hum. Is this typical for these machines? I have all the faders and the main up about 3/4s. Thanks again ...
You may have a ground loop. Make sure that all the gear that is connected together is plugged into a power strip that goes to the same AC wall outlet. Otherwise, slight differences in voltage between outlets in the house wiring can cause a current to run along your audio cables, causing a hum. Or radio frequency interference (e.g. from wall warts, transformers, wi-fi, etc.) could be the culprit. Or AC line noise from appliances like air conditioning -- use a AC line filter to eliminate.
Thanks ... tried all these ... the RX5 was defective. Many of the sounds were dead and it would not play back patterns. Confirmed when I sent back to the seller. Was fortunate to find one here in Cleveland that was NOS. The only ROM I am missing now is the original that came with the RX5 ... wonder if anyone is selling these aftermarket. Ebay's supply on these is slim.
I used one of these for recording in 1990. It was great, especially being able to alter the sounds, even reversing complete envelopes (which the Rolands couldn't do).
Hehe, I spent days tuning sounds and making songs on the RX5. It always seemed to me that Roland created the classic drum machines and synths, but Yamaha were the uncool, quirky, technology innovators.
lol i have a keyboard from this era also, sounds just like it.. i really wonder what the fuck yamaha was thinking when they were going for this sound lol
The RX5 was a fat drum machine for it's time. I used it in the studio and composed stuff on it. Its sounds are programmable too...along with the sound cartridges, it's not slouch.
My last comment sounds more negative than I meant it to be. I just bought an Alesis SR-16 because I'm a big fan of 80's reverb snares and other cheesey noises that most newer machines don't have. I was mostly talking about that demo song that starts 1:55 in with that guy going "wow" - would you actually listen to that in your car and take it seriously?
LOL that would be a riot to crank up that song cruising down the road with your windows down jamming like Terry Crews on the Adam Sandler Click movie hahaha.
They used an RX5 with the standard installed sounds, just used loads of reverb to get that cavernous sound. Before the RX5 I think they used an Oberheim DMX.
you've right that Sisters used a lot of reverb to creat these sound but in another way like Cocteau Twins do. From Floodland era Eldritch started experiment with sampling and made more industrial&dance sound.
I'm still thinking how he creat snare sound or bassdrum? For exemple Temple of Love 1992 or Alice 1993. It is possible that he used 4 or5 different reverb for snare? some great compressor? ADSR envelope??
Thanks for posting this. I used to own an RX15. Cool 12-bit samples. Would fit well into hip-hop of today. Wonder why we don't see more of these? I also thought the Yamaha style of creating patterns and songs made more sense than the Roland TR way. But everything adopted the Roland method it seems.
I have tha same machine! it sounds cool! Especially the el toms, bass and snare drums! The cool thing about it is that you have the amp and pitch envelopes! Not many other vintage lofi drummachines has that i think!
Some artists use this drum machine really well like The Sisters Of Mercy,Chris And Cosy or SPK.Used properly and it could turn into a pretty good groove machine.Problem is its size.Too big for what it all does.
i bought one new all those years ago, then bought another one recently on an ebay meltdown. i love the idea of the rx5 but get bored of its sounds very easily. i have 8 other drums machine and doubt i'll add the rx5 again...
What a noob learn to play the drums idiot.

You'd be surprised at how heavy these things can sound if you feed this into a guitar amp with distortion.
I experiment a lot, so I do it all the time.
It sounds pretty cool.
You guys should try it if you get bored.
EnDZYm3 2 years ago
i'd be wary of doing something like that.. the bass load may blow your amp or speakers..
guitar amps arent designed for drum or bass frequencies .
