  • Without the symphony orchestra and w/o John Tout on keyboards; the depth is lost. Still, I enjoy this version a lot. Yes, they were on a decline here but an interesting era for the band. At least Jon Camp was still in the band. And, Annie's voice is still fantastic!

  • Thank you. I don't think anybody has ever posted the complete medley (Opening Out, Song of Scheherazade, Ocean Gypsy, Can You Understand, Touching Once). Another question: have you ever seen the version of Northern Lights at The Mike Douglas Show?

  • Hi. Now that YouTube allows long videos, what about posting the complete (17 min) medley?

  • @RenaissancePrologue

Great idea. I might just do that if no one else has beaten me to it. :)

  • My first rock concert that I was in , was Renaissance concert in 1977/78 in Israel , Haifa town

It was holiday for Rock lovers in Israel

The concert was in Romema basketball hall in Carmel mountan,

It was the best moment in my life

    Lord!

  • Old guys rule. I saw the Moody Blues on PBS recently and they were tearin' stuff up!

  • Fantastic voice!!!!!! seen them a few times in the Philly area in the '70s. I seen them when they toured for this album and did the whole album live at the Tower theater in Upper Darby, PA Never forget it!!

  • I had such a mad crush on her then... in spite of that, I still think she had one of the best voices of my generation.

  • Kind of like YES. Annie and Jon Anderson should've done some works together.

  • What a talentd group! I love song for all seasons as well!

  • I LOVE GAVIN! :D He should wear a kilt!

  • Love both Blackmore's Night and Renaissance music- - both ETHERIAL!!!

Candice and Annie are both AMAZING!!! And... that is it!

  • I saw Annie and Renaissance in about 77 or 78 perform with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in Roch. NY. Sat in the third row center in The Eastman Theater. One of the best venues in the world. Truly a remarkable show.

  • @skizcat Really?

  • @skizcat I was there too! It was 3-17-77, and someone has put recordings of the concert on youtube.

The beauty of the music, of Annie Haslam's voice, of the 35 members of the RPO, and of the Eastman Theater... overwhelming bliss.

  • wow!

  • The drummer Gavin Harrison is really good. He's now in Porcupine Tree.

  • Annie is really great, but the band is poorly sounding (ugly synth sounds) ! I miss John Tout and Terry Sullivan ! And what's Michael Dunford doing with this electric guitar ?

  • Beautiful music and voice. Have loved this song for years. I have not been able to find another "sound" like the hauntingly beautiful music of Renaissance, or an incredible voice like Annies. Incredible.

  • @sltwitness If you listen to some of Steve Hacketts work you may be impressed

  • Annie is a goddess...

  • i agree shes the queen

  • Does anyone know where i can get the sheet music for song of scherazade?

  • unfortunate costuming selection. But what a voice!

  • I think the band was just as good here as it the 1970s... A bit different of course, because things do change as time goes on. ∞∞∞∞∞

  • splendido

  • Annie, que buena voz, no hay otra igual.

  • Sorry but this to me is like looking at some ofhter band. It's like going back a ways and listening to the Original Fleetwod Mac and listening to the 1975 version oif the band with the same name not the same music. Annie will always be Annie but Reniaissance is not without John Tout and Terry Sullivan. Also Annie has way to much echo in this video and that outfit. Oy vey

  • Buena version , bastante diferente a la original , se nota que es mucho más moderna y sin orquesta .... One its my favorites albums : Scheherazade

  • I was head over heels in love with Annie 30-some odd years ago, and this just makes me fall in love with her all over again.

  • You and me both. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Haslam before a WNEW-FM Christmas Concert (I won "special" tickets) and was completely dumbstruck...got a kiss on the cheek out of it, and i remember Scott Muni saying how lucky I was...great voice, wonderful person. Glad to see she survived the breast cancer.

  • I definetly envy you. :-)

  • That's ok You Tube and Sponsors, I bought the "Trip to the Fair" on vinyl!

I actually have a few turntables! Gotta give a little to Annie's Pension one way or another!

  • What's the bass? I think is some kind of Fender Precission but i don't know what version or model.

  • wolfepack and Kwinquark1, we were comparing this version with Blackmore's Night version of Ocean Gypsy, not an original studio version. Live, Blackmore's Night takes it. Why? Because both female singers, Annie, and Candice have beautiful voices, but musicianship wise musicianship wise Blackmore is genius as most guitar afficionados full well are aware. And he can

garner the best of the best for his bands, based on his reputation as a virtuoso himself.

  • Annie Haslam has a perfect voice.

  • I like Camp's playing about as much as the next progger. But I hear a lot of classic Rutherford most of the time.

  • No disrespect to Candice Night but Annie's voice is magic. Still sends chills up my spine three decades later....

  • classy classic - shades of ELP thanks

  • so funny look inside PROLOGUE-all true hippies-now theyve given into the times-haircuts-'contemporary' playing of the songs.

had Dunford and Camp not wigged out and thought they needed ti keep up with the time-stheyshould have gone to a small label

TURNOFTHE CARDS and SCHEHERAZADE are the apex-

NOVELLA pretty good/just OK. SFAS was barely tollerable and Azure dor made for a great frizbee They gave in-and neednt have,

Blackmores version is 4&1/2 stars-she leaves off the coda to each verse (?)

  • Novella "pretty good? just ok?". It's amazing how people react to the same song, I much prefer NOVELLA to SCHEHERAZADE. "The Sisters" is just too haunting...:)

  • here it was 1977-the social and musical landscape had changed-they moved to a major label-WB--which means they had to produce-freedom to create changed to-'as long as it makes us money' they were probably exhausted from the gigantic touring of Scherazade. Seemed like Dunford was kind of shellshocked. The collapse of BTM-their home label in the UK-where they could do pretty much anything they pleased plus the creative freedom of the early mid 1970s was gone. punk and throwaway pop songs now ruled

  • I agree with anah; the original version is much, MUCH better. No offense to the Blackmore Night version, but Annies voice on the original release, back in 75 I believe, was second to none. Her voice was amazing!

  • It's a shame there's no "platform" for bands like this , these days. A pop singer can play a whole concert "playback" now and no sign of backing musicians!

  • Thanks, anaha.. will try it, though I was only comparing this particular version with Blackmore's Night's studio version. Blackmore's Night's live performances of course are even better (as usual with Ritchie, in Purp and Rainbow too when he was with them) than the studio version. I hope they put out

a live album eventually. Saw them in concert and it felt like being thrown back in history

    to the Renaissance itself.

  • this is just too eighties for me... i love their music, but this performance just isn't right...

  • I prefer the Blackmore's Night version. Although this is beautiful too. Blackmore's Night version has a more mystical and minstrel/trobadour like quality to it like they stepped right into the Renaissance era to perform for some Euro king's courtyard.

  • You need to hear this song off of their "Tales from 1001 Nights". FAR and away more mysterious and deep than Blackmore's Night version. This vid does not do justice to how wonderfully they recorded this song which after all they wrote. Here, it is squeezed into the medley, truncated, and not particularly well played by their standards. They were a '70's band and may have been a bit past their prime here also. FIND THAT VERSION and then decide!!

  • actually, i DO have that version muahhhaaa!!!! i used to listen to it alot. i had it on LP, but i dont remember what happened to it so i bought a cassette tape version of it a few years later, i always loved the melodic way it flowed

  • Erm, Blackmore's Night version of what?

  • Blackmores wife Candace singing OCEAN GYPSY

  • Haha, note the guy checking his watch at 2:50!

  • Have you ever heard Camp and Dunford do vocals without Annie...ouch!

She was the greatest ever and they were perfect together!

  • one must admire Annie's vocal abilities, an incredible singer, unmatched and unique. But Dear God, this dress...

  • i agree , this dress...

  • I love so much this band... I have this concert, but, sadly, wrong quality.

  • awesome symphonic prog

  • someone post the ocean gypsey live version from the carnegie hall album!!cmon someone must have it!!!!

  • I WAS THERE, SNUCK IN , IT WAS GREAT.

  • Even Stanley Clarke was once quoted as saying that Jon Camp of Renaissance was the most melodic bass player out there. I love this music!

  • Agreed. Jon Camp carried the melody of many Renaissance songs... very rare for a bassist to do.
