What a God Given gift Chris Rea was born with ! Just love the voice AND the feel he portrays in his vocal interpretation of the lyrics. His whole catalogue is music to my ears, my imagination and my soul, just love it !!!
Death of Steel at the Artsbank Saltburn by the Sea is a beautiful moving tribute to the steel industry and people of the North East, I highly recommend it. There is a short film interspersed with this song, it touches the soul.
They play this song at all Middlesbrough FC home games. Especially poigniant now with the closure of the CORUS steelworks. The Biggest steelworks in europe.
what year were you? I left in '74 Father Greystone the boss, and josh Higgins the enforcer. And now back in the uk after being bagged in oz, hard going these recessions. steel river holds many memories
Continueing the thread below - the bankers, politicians and moneymen have not considered people once again - Steel River is not faring well - news of more steel closures and lives ruined. I suppose goverments will not put long term interest above a 5 year desire for votes, its time they considered folk for what they are rather than a vote. Say goodbye to steel river. it is so sad
You can take the boy out of the 'Boro' but........ I would never have believed how emotional I could become over a song, missing the place big-time and I'm in a paradise called Maroochydore. I hope they fare better in this recession
I wish Rea was better known in the US - grew up in the Pittsburgh region and this song hits home for anybody that grew up in the days when steel was king.
Shows great songs transfer from country to country from nation to nation especially in times of change and upheaval.
Chris wrote this song about the Steel foundaries in North England closing down on the River Tees -steel that amongst many things produced the steel that made the Sydney Harbour iconic bridge....
Hope that did not take much away from your thoughts, as Pittsburgh USA I know went through similar transition.
The only thing I can remember about my Dad is that he loved Rea. Just found out that my Dad has passed away and all these songs have so many memories. Went to see Chris Rea in 2006 to see what the big deal was about and thought he was amazing. I'm a Bon Jovi fan but would rather see Chris live. RIP IAN DIX
Mr Rea didn't perform Steel River tonight in Belfast, (a shame, considering it's Titanic past..) but he did capture the crowd and we were molten in the singularily velveteen quality of the instantly recognizable vocal qualities of his delivery.
not quite. -checkout the others like "Nothing to fear" "Windy Town" "Road to Hell" "On the beach".... -the list goes on and on the guy's a massive talent
Yeah, there was something published around 1986, I think its out of print now, it was the piano score and guitar tabs to the hits up to On The Beach. Think it is out of print now but keep checking sites like ebay and one might come up. Lost mine :-(

I know Chris was born and raised in
Middlesborough but I swear he has some STEELTON ,PA. blood in him.

Chris was born and bred in Middlesbrough (as was Paul Rodgers) and like me is an old boy of St.Mary's College.
Many of his songs are about his home town and this one is no exception: Steel River being the river Tees.

even this good one sounds very ordinary when you take "nothing to fear" into consideration.
I think Chris Rea is not just a 80's artist, he's a successful musician of all times.
