  • What a God Given gift Chris Rea was born with ! Just love the voice AND the feel he portrays in his vocal interpretation of the lyrics. His whole catalogue is music to my ears, my imagination and my soul, just love it !!!

    Regards,

    IAN in Oz.

  • Brilliant - have to agtree C R is criminally under rated - Check out the Benny Santini & Deltics albums

  • This is BORO, Go Chris.

Where were you when they shut us down.....? Great song.

  • This is BORO, Go Chris.

  • Death of Steel at the Artsbank Saltburn by the Sea is a beautiful moving tribute to the steel industry and people of the North East, I highly recommend it. There is a short film interspersed with this song, it touches the soul.

  • Catastrohically prophetic. "Not a single word was true" RIP CORUS!

  • does anybody have the mp3 please :D

  • Such a beautiful song! My CR favourite.

Mats from a steel river town in Sweden.

  • They play this song at all Middlesbrough FC home games. Especially poigniant now with the closure of the CORUS steelworks. The Biggest steelworks in europe.

  • Tony Hicks- Best drummer ever

  • R.I,P CORUS :(

  • my mum asked me to put this on cos the last steel works has been closed today in teeside :(

  • so sorry, I gave it a thumb down by total mistake. so sorryy...

  • I know Chris was born and raised in

Middlesborough but I swear he has some STEELTON ,PA. blood in him.

  • Chris was born and bred in Middlesbrough (as was Paul Rodgers) and like me is an old boy of St.Mary's College.

Many of his songs are about his home town and this one is no exception: Steel River being the river Tees.

  • hi eqrsc

what year were you? I left in '74 Father Greystone the boss, and josh Higgins the enforcer. And now back in the uk after being bagged in oz, hard going these recessions. steel river holds many memories

  • Hi Ged.

    Left in 69.

  • Where is he now??? Once you hear his music you can never forget. His voice his melody ...great!!

I love seeing him playing. thanks.

  • He is back touring we are seing him next year in Sheffield

  • Continueing the thread below - the bankers, politicians and moneymen have not considered people once again - Steel River is not faring well - news of more steel closures and lives ruined. I suppose goverments will not put long term interest above a 5 year desire for votes, its time they considered folk for what they are rather than a vote. Say goodbye to steel river. it is so sad

  • You can take the boy out of the 'Boro' but........ I would never have believed how emotional I could become over a song, missing the place big-time and I'm in a paradise called Maroochydore. I hope they fare better in this recession

  • Billy Joel copied this for "ALLENS TOWN"

  • My favorite CR song as well... great hook... ;=)

  • even this good one sounds very ordinary when you take "nothing to fear" into consideration.

I think Chris Rea is not just a 80's artist, he's a successful musician of all times.

  • haha we had too listen too this song in geography =S

the dude behind him plaing the guitar .. lmaoo

the songs okaii tho ..cool that middlesbrough has a song ;)

  • I am a geordie and Chris does rock brilliant love all his music.

  • Well Chris is a Teessider so it is rare for a Geordie to appreciate anyone outside the Tyne fog -so good on yer.

  • it's very rare to see a singer from Middlesbrough to write a song about the place!

    Middlesbrough Rules!

  • probably the most underrated artist that ever lived. Love you Chris. Oh yes this sounds very american but beleive me this is all English

  • I agree, it does sound American too, but this song is about Teesside (where Chris is from if you don't know) Great!

  • @RecollectionRoad you'r right. I know him since years, but yet now I adore his music, voice and guitarplaying

  • I wish Rea was better known in the US - grew up in the Pittsburgh region and this song hits home for anybody that grew up in the days when steel was king.

  • Shows great songs transfer from country to country from nation to nation especially in times of change and upheaval.

Chris wrote this song about the Steel foundaries in North England closing down on the River Tees -steel that amongst many things produced the steel that made the Sydney Harbour iconic bridge....

Hope that did not take much away from your thoughts, as Pittsburgh USA I know went through similar transition.

  • Josephine, On the beach, All summer long, I can hear your heartbeat are my favorite songs from this album.. Would love to see Chris live

  • The only thing I can remember about my Dad is that he loved Rea. Just found out that my Dad has passed away and all these songs have so many memories. Went to see Chris Rea in 2006 to see what the big deal was about and thought he was amazing. I'm a Bon Jovi fan but would rather see Chris live. RIP IAN DIX

  • probably the best guitar slider in the business ;)

  • the river lives again!!!!!!

  • Mr Rea didn't perform Steel River tonight in Belfast, (a shame, considering it's Titanic past..) but he did capture the crowd and we were molten in the singularily velveteen quality of the instantly recognizable vocal qualities of his delivery.

  • Dave Dryden guitar

  • MAGIC

  • STEEL RIVER = RIVER TEES Yah! ROCKON chris (please come back to your hometown!) ;(

  • Possibly Rea's best track.

  • DEFINITELY Rea's best track!

  • not quite. -checkout the others like "Nothing to fear" "Windy Town" "Road to Hell" "On the beach".... -the list goes on and on the guy's a massive talent

  • i remember the ice cream

  • does anyone know where i can get the piano score music for this song ? ....i've looked everywhere and no one seems to have it...

  • Yeah, there was something published around 1986, I think its out of print now, it was the piano score and guitar tabs to the hits up to On The Beach. Think it is out of print now but keep checking sites like ebay and one might come up. Lost mine :-(

  • Great, indeed beautiful, song.

  • ya "lizqaz19" also a song writter from out home town!!!rock on
