I heard the story about this. It happened somewhere in Canada, and the bridge operator was found to be drunk and/or high when the ship was passing. He accidentally lowered the bridge too early. Everyone on the ship survived I believe, even the captain and first officer in the wheelhouse.

This was an N.M Patterson & Sons ship named the Windoc. The date of this diasaster was Aug. 11, 2001. This accident (f***up) was the straw that broke the camel's back and forced a very respected family company in Thunder Bay Ont. to close up and sell off any remaining assets... They are missed dearly..

I know the bridge operator - his real story was that while on duty he hired some bad ass hooker who sat on the down button accidently just as she was going down on the bridge operator. He only got fined five dollars while the hooker was charged with negligence!

When the shit hits the fan the pilot is only an adviser. The captain has the complete responsibility for his ship. If the bridge is not open when you arrive, you wait. Here you can see the bridge lowering as the ship hits it. If the bridge starts to go down when you passed the point of no return you are in a realy bad situation. Maybe that is what happened.
