Video Log #5, FIRST RIDE - Starting 'Squirt'

I just started my gelding under saddle last week. I did all the ground work myself and I sat in the saddle on him a few times but last week the trainer got on him for the first time and then i took a go at it. He did very well for his first I think. He is deaf and we had to use all body language and no vocal cues so it was fun! He is my baby and I love him so much! You did a great job with this horse! Check out my video and rate or comment. @Adumsgurl Just went and checked out your video. What a BEAUTIFUL AND WELL TAKEN CARE OF HORSE he is! Looks like you are doing a really good job with him.

Never worked with a deaf horse but I'd imagine it comes with it's own challenges. Your horse seems very calm and willing given his disability. All a credit to his good handling and the time you've spent with him.

He did real good, better than I hoped or expected actually. :~)

Wants to go UP but I'm not feeling any *buck* in there so that's a big plus. Things will get easier for him once Squirt starts thinking 'forward' and finds his legs so to speak. It'll become fun for him when he loosens up. Right now he's trying to out think me and he's not so sure he wants to let me be the 'leader'. LOL!

They're all a little different.

Hi Stars! Yup he's been interesting all right. Got a little spoiled as a F-O-A-L and his life is suddenly changing (for the better). He's not so sure he's gonna like this new program but me's thinking he's gonna do fine in the world as a real 'horse'.

Closer to his fifth birthday than he is to 4 yrs old, so it was definitely TIME to get this one started. Doesn't mind giving me the slow pony rides but gets that 'tude when I push him a little. We'll go slow with him and he'll get over it. :~)

What is it with you? You always get the horses with head bouncing and tossing. You're gonna be a full-on expert with them by the time it's all said and done. At least Squirt doesn't seem to really drive much effort into it. Kinda funny when you're up there for the first time, and they move off and then go, "wow ... um ... that feels different!" Lookin' good though.

Dunno Ro! Thought w/Tuco was because I bitted him too soon. Squirt's doing it also in a rope halter. Must be missing *something* in my program w/them.

On the GOOD side none of the colts seem to care at all that I'm ON them. They just let me get up there and go 'OK, now what do you want?' So that's a BIG step in the process that I must be gettin right. YAY!

Ground driving don't do much of it. Going back a step w/Squirt and gonna try it tho.

See ride #2, I don't want to start a bad habit. :~)

Almost would believe it, they are both reluctant to MOVE. LOL!

Better than bucking tho, I suppose.

Going to take a step back with this colt after ride #2 (there's a video posted). Go back to some ground driving so he understands a little better what I want him to do. Not wanting to start any bad/dangerous habits in him.

Get another youngster, go to an auction and pick up a cute colt & GO for it. :~)

It's fun to start the babies, but it's not for everyone. HAVE FUN with your good horse!

Yeah, your away Julz..Good to let him think he's in charge of where he's going early, you can take over when he's had enough and gets lost. I must say, you look like a kid riding a new bike ..hehe your grinning from ear to ear enjoying every minute of it. That's a feeling people that don't ride can't understand. Good to see the safety gear, even though it does look pretty hot over there. Love the tunes too, you must be around my age..

Hehe! Don't know where that SMILE comes from, but it's all ways there with horses. :~)

Couldn't wait to get the vest and helmet OFF, must've been 10 degrees hotter with em on. Better than a cracked rib or bump on the head, just in case. Don't like the way he's thinking UP all the time, think we'll work it out of him soon.

Prob *little* older there, Paul. Age is really a state of mind isn't it? YOU have excellent taste in music! Think that's one thing we have in common. That's good. LOL! :~)

Way to go Julz! "Busy feet are happy feet" He looked to be connected to you almost the whole time with his ears and even did some licking/chewing near the end--what a good boy--You made it look easy--Congratulations! (and a little bit of devil makes for a more interesting horse, dont'cha think?)

Like flying a plane, shouldn't be 2 exciting if ur doin it right. Hehehe!

He's testing his options & a tiny bit resentful of my pushing him around. He'll do fine w/some time. Still thinks the world is *his* oyster & not sure what to do about the sudden change in game plan. Will bring him along a little slower.

His BEST option is to go along with me, not TRY me like he's wanting to right now.

He's a GOOD boy. :~)

Yes head tossing's annoying "G". Was looking for his options & UP is where he was thinking to go. We don't want UP, we want FORWARD. He's got that 'attitude' still & not quite ready to give it up.

All ways get nerves on 1st ride but goes away quickly. Hit a panel & BUCKED almost unseated me. WHEW! Will use my better fitting saddle next ride this ones lite & easy to carry so it's my starter saddle. Squirts gonna TRY & I need to be ready for it. Will ask for little more outta him on ride #2. :~)

Instead of pushing him to 'it' this ride figured to keep it soft & let him get used to RIDE idea. He's not ready to let me be his leader. He'll come around, he's just gonna take more time unless I wanna PUSH. Wanted more from him *trot* *canter* but he wasn't ready. This was a GOOD 1st ride for him. :~)

This was the ear pinner and brat boy. He's gotten a little spoiled in his 4 yrs and doesn't so much like the idea of having to do what I want him to do. Settled for a quiet 1st ride because of his way of thinking. Will ask for more on ride #2.

Nope Bill not quite yet. Staying in the 'Bratty Colt Union' in his mind. Doesn't like me pushing him around up there.

We bumped panel which knocked my stirrup & scared him, one blow up (not filmed).

Like all ranges of motion out of em in a first ride, but not bucking. He kept wanting to go UP with me also. Settled for keeping him moving & thinking about things instead of rodeo, which he would have been happy to give me. He'll come around but he's gonna try me. Can FEEL it in there. LOL!

Big believer in doing everything from both sides, a LOT. On, off, up, down, saddling, you name it. The goal is to come away with some good broke horses. Hehehe!

Wanted a little more from him, but he's got that bratty little temper and he wasn't so sure he wanted me pushing him around. Instead of making it a test of wills decided we'd settle for a nice quiet first ride. Was up and ON and MOVING so that was GREAT for the first day. Like *trot* and *canter* too if I can get it. :~)

Horses feel that like they feel fear and they want a confident leader. Now Squirt's not quite ready to let me 'lead' yet, but he'll come around. :~)

Our friend 'Pinky Pants' is one of my HERO'S. Really truly. Paul just looks at em and says, "Let's DO this Buddy" gets them OUT works left & right. YAY!
