adam is a legend for sure! you guys should definately pick up his autobiography "True Colours".
he tells about why he knelt down in emotion after getting his century. I loved and respected him alot before i read it, after it he is my absolute idol. Love ya Gilly!
n the history of the game i think gilchrist has played 2 of maybe the top 1o test innings his 149 no in his second test against pakistan australia chasing 369 against a attack consisting of akram waqar younis aktar and his 121 against india in his first test in india with australia 5 for 90 and a wicket spinning almost square a once in a generation player in my mind and the most destructive player since viv richards was at his peak
@ratboy2342 i'm not sure if you meant to ask martyn's overall score in this game or how many he made in the partnership with gilly. martyn scored 133 out of 338 runs scored while he was at the wicket...of these, 21 were made in partnership with steve waugh and the remaining 317 with gilchrist. hope that answers your question somewhat.
On reaching my ton, I did not know whether to jump for joy or give a determined up yours to the crowd and whomever it was who had started the rumour. In the end, I had no control over my reaction. I simply ran off the wicket, raised my bat to acknowledge the team and the support staff, felt the emotions bubble up and squatted with my head down. It was the first time I remember crying on the cricket field. From the book "Walking to Victory" by Adam Gilchrist. What a brilliant innings!
my fav player ever im not sure it was his greatest test innings his 149 in his second test against pakistan against younis akram akctar and saqlain with australia chasing 370 to win on a 5th day hobart wicket was probably his best i dont think a batsman since viv richards scared bowlers like gilchrist when he had his eye in he was just about unbowbable to
He is truly a legend. That's the person I respect from Aus. cricketers. I just found out from cricinfo that he cried when he reached 100 .. because some ass h..s(from crowd) made really offensive shout out on ground. I don't want to mention it here. It was just disgusting .. no wonder he got emotional. This was his best inning in test. one of the most respected cricketer. thanks for posting.
Gili woz a class act, speshly considering that He was a brilliant wicket keeper and at least equally good batsman, one of the very few wicket keepers who can still be included as a batsman only.
Seriously, a fabulous innings, and when you consider the emotions, because of the disgusting shit the South African crowds were giving him, it becomes all teh more great.
This is a serious question. Start, I'm English and have huge respect for Gilly. He'd be first on my all time team sheet, along with Punter, Warney and Ooh ahh Glen McGrath. Nice bloke too from what I've seen. Do Aussies think he was on the wane and retired at the right point, or could he have gone on. I saw nothing to suggest he was ready to retire. I think Langer, Martyn and Haydos went too far, but I think Gilly was astute and went while still playing well.
He went at the right time. He was dropping catches, and not making many runs. He would always get starts, but could never go on with it. The pressure was getting to much for him from the media and he decided to quit.
I was devastated when he retired, but looking back it was probably the right decision.
Cheers Gillysbiggestfan: He was an amazing talent. Sadly for my team, too good a talent at times. Fair play to him, he deserved the riches and adulation he achieved.
If you search on YouTube you'll find a video of him as teen doing some time over here in a senior league.
@Gillysbiggestfan I remember reading an interview with him when he said that during the home series against either Sri Lanka or India (can't remember) he dropped a regulation catch behind the stumps and that was the moment when he made up his mind to quit.
Shahan, if I were picking my best ever cricket team then you pick the skips first, and then the wicket keep. I am still thinking of skip, but it would probably be S Waugh. I don't even need to think about Gilly, he's straight on the team sheet.
ive read gillys autobiography and he says that dropping cathces in that indian series made him think about retiring once and for all. id say gilly would be one of the harshest judges of themselves amongst cricketers.
I don't know much about Gilly other than he was a brilliant cricketer and a pieces I've seen on him in the press and on film. I'd say that is one of the differences between Aus and the rest of the world, the players who put on the baggy green would be their own harshest crickets. That's what makes them the best, there is the right culture in CA. People who come on here and slag of Aussie cricket aren't cricket lovers mate. I'm English and it's been painful, but you gotta respect the attitude.
And that's the other difference. You're 14 and are reading biographies of Gilly. Immense effort sir, immense effort. Aussies have complete pride in their national team and engender the spirit of the game at an early age. Best of luck if you play, hope you go far. Here, kids want to play soccer. It's destroyed English cricket.
thnx so much for uploadin this innings! one of the best ever... its taken till this summer for the proteas to exact some revenge, but it was knocks like this that kept aus dominance over the cricket box... wat a smashing!!
wow. looking at the overs he was in it took him just 52 overs to get a 200 with his second hundred only taking 18 overs. Funny how the South Africans were shit back then but are kicking the shit out of us now. May i say wow, EIGHT sixes!!!

A truly magnificent innings from one of the best cricketers of our time; not to mention, in my opinion, one of the best sportsmen in history.
The world needs more Adam Gilchrists.
