.45 ACP for Bear? Not in this lifetime. Bear would eat you and then shit the bullet on your fleshless bones And then laugh. Bears have a sense of humor. I don't know many stories about folks with handguns successfully stopping Grizz. Nope, not many. In fact, I have never even heard one yet. Nope, no handgun drops Bear stories. I will Google "Nut with .45 shoots Bear" when I finish commenting. If I get any hits they will probably be obituaries.
@Razorback30001 knock down power may be good against humans, but try knocking down a 600+ lb bear. i would be leery to go against one with my .357, much less a .45 acp. personally, i would take a rifle any day of the week but if one must go with a handgun, then it should be .454 casull and bigger.
i think FMJ is enough but the bear is too big so in 20 feet away shooting it in the legs, tummy, head or even in breast area would be enough especially if you shoot multiple times with 45.

That'd have to be a pretty lucky shot. I once heard about a hunter up in alaska who shot a brown bear 4 times with his 30-06 and then 19 times with a 9mm and it still lived to maul him and travel 8 hours away...the skull was barely fractured from the 9mm bullets, it died from cranial hemorrhage
if he had shot the bear in the neck, eyes, nose, or through the mouth it wouldve killed it in a shot or two with a 9mm. and he shouldve shot it in the head with a 30-06 or carry like a .45 at least.
No...the bear had been shot with a 9mm around the eyes and forehead. The 30-06 hit its vital regions. The 9mm hit the forehead where the skull is not only thickest but also at an angle, causing the 9mm to be deflected.

Yeah, the .45s maybe slow but they have aggressive knock down power.. Especially the 230 grain bullets..!!!
