I have a fluval edge 12gallon that's only one week old, I have two gold fish, two glass cats and a crawl dad. I noticed the gold fish had ICK on them lastnight. I went to my local fish store and purchased AP quick cure., and added the right amount to the tank. I love in Florida so I do not have a heater. My water stays about 74 degrees. The people at the fish store say that the ICK treatment will not harm my crawl dad. Is this true and is there anything else I should be doing ? Thanks
I noticed 2 female Guppy's get ich after a batch of baby fry. I read everything and then just put half a spoon of garlic salt in 5 gallon tank filter . I changed 50/50 water, Salt brought life back into the fish the fry became free swimmers . The garlic is known to kill the ich and reduces carrier activity. Also I had to remove the infected females once the spore grows they become host droping the white mucus sacks of ich it infects the tank at this stage . It was pet smart aswell, Ich.
If you don't want Ich in your tank, simply increase the temperature to 85 degrees and add a gallon of aquarium salt, per 5 gallons and within one week all ick will eventually die.
Goodness, this guy is clueless. Take the carbon out then put it back after you treated? So you can reinfect them? Take the snails and pleco out cause they may be affected by the ich? No the reason he takes them out is the coppersafe will kill them. He doesn't know why hes doing what hes doing or what hes saying.
@MegaPlanelover Wrong, ICH is short for the really long name of the bacteria, and it is spelled ich. People just think of it as gross and spell it like icky...lol But really ICH is correct, do a search you'll see.
@MegaPlanelover Nope, he's just your regular goldfish, it actually seemed like he was controlling the ick better than the meds :o They're all better now though and he seems fine, he's just fatter XD
I got two new goldfish for my tank recently and EVERYONE got ick... ARGH. I am in the process of treating them now, but when I found out they were sick, my littlest fish was cleaning the parasites off my bigger guys XD I found it cute in a disturbing way, but I'm wondering if that's bad for him, any thoughts?
You don't want ich? real easy when your dealer bags ur fish put it up to a bright light and examine the fish for any fungus, ich spots or sores, so easy to do if its sick then dont buy and go somewhere else i do it all the time and it saves me alot of hassles and tell your dealer why you dont want to buy that fish.
DARN last time i went to the petstore i went to the hamster guy CRAP well, now i know that when dealing with fish i should ask for the fish guy, oops, thank god this video was made! I could not have lived without it [rolls eyes]
@happisonu Maybe so but I have bought fish from Pet Smart for years with no ich. I finally got ich from a fish store than I considered to be very good. The people at Petco/ Pet Smart are stupid do do you'r own research before buying. But their fish and prices seem to be good.
i did not say all their fish have ick, but 50% of them already have ick and the rest gets the ick from the other fish which already have ick on them. every time i went to local pet store, most of their tanks have dead fishes and some of them looks sick. even the best store fish could have ick on them for many reasons like stress during delivery etc or more. i just buy my accessories from local pet store, but no fish.
@happisonu it really doesn't matter where you buy them, ick is caused by stress. bought fish from petmarts, and they are happy and health. or maybe your aquarium isn't balanced.
@1Rockyboxer1 wrong, ich or ick is not caused by stress. While stress can be a factor in increasing the chances a fish gets ick, a perfectly happy and healthy will get ick if exposed to the parasite. Balancing your aquarium isn't the issue either. High levels of Ammonia and/or nitrates, Ph too low/high, salinity level, temperature kill both fish and the parasite. In fact fish are more resistant than the parasite to those changes.
@happisonu Ick is going to be a possibility from any shop you buy your fish from. Petland, petworld, walmart, petco, petsmart , mom and pop shops etc. for the majority do not breed their own fish and get them from suppliers who for all you know could have had ick issues. Ick can live in the gills unseen to the naked eye and so instead of slandering any company or shop I think its a bit more grown up to simply say that wherever you purchase your fish make sure you quarantine them first!!
I've had one goldfish for 4 years in a 10 gallon tank. My niece won two rather small fish at a fair two days ago and her mom was going to get her a tank for them this week. I know it's cramped, but I felt sorry for them b/c they were in a freakin' ziploc baggy. :/ So, I let them stay with me. My bad, I know. But, now my goldfish has ich. :( Her two small ones have already died. I've been putting the Jungle Ich Clear in on them...but, it doesn't seem to be helping. Any advice? I'm really bummed.

Wrong, It has been found that Ich does not infect new fish at 29.4°C/85°F (Johnson, 1976), stops reproducing at 30°C/86°F (Dr. Nick St. Erne, DVM, pers. comm.), and dies at 32°C/89.5°F (Meyer, 1984), [1]
I need HELP! only one of my fish have a problom its kinda wired i thought it might be fin rot but it has white on the fin. it don;t look like ick because its not salt size. its larger in size. i DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO
temperature increase is bs! you'll more then likely just cause the ich 2 reproduce and kill your fish faster. salt is also more bs, bad 4 your scaless and sensitive fish, i have lost plenty of fish with those two methods, never lost a single fish by using my method below
I use a different approach 2 ich, no malachite green, no coppersafe, no temperature increase.
Daily gravel vaccuming of atleast 30% and granulated garlic sounds weird huh, but the parasites hate it and it will actually stimulate fish apetite, finally get a UV sterilizer, you can pick up the small one at most pets marts for $40, this will kill free swimming ich
After installing my UV sterilizer i have never had an outbreak, my plants still look great, and my water looks crystal clear!
It's a myth that ich is always present in a tank and a healthy fish will be able to fight off the disease. If your tank has ich the fish will all get it, but some are more sensitive to it than others. Cichlids are generally more resistant to it in my experience and the ich doesn't generally take over the entire body but instead just attacks the gills, perhaps it's the thicker slime coat or scales or something. That's often how ich is transferred, a fish will have it on its gills not body.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
heres a simple tip, if you have ich, no big deal, figure out what stressed the fish out so much and dont do it again, then chop up a little garlic and put it in the tank water, bye bye ich,
my tank 20g infested with ich i washed everything thru boiled water did a 100% water change placed ich control and just waiting for some results any1 kno what else i can do?
i agree, i have seen this method of treatment before in some articles, but it is a old age aquarium keeping method, now that we are more informed we should discurrgae such methodologies.

if you dont want to pay the enourmously over priced uv sterilizers at pet stores, buy them from home depot in the pond section.
yes, never ever do a 100% W.C ever if you do theres no bacteria in there which will kill the fish with the ick so youve wrecked a 1 month long cycle from your fish tank
if you dont know what a cycle is dont bother getting any fish at all..... if you want to know find out for your self not by asking people a cycle is the benifical bacteria that multiplys during the cycle a cycle lasts about 1 month with no fish in the tank you neen it cycled or the fish will die due to a amontia over crowd
Go to your nearest fish specializing store and ask for medicine. Follow the steps above mostly. I think your baby's are goners because they are incredibly small and probably goin to be overcome with the parasite.
if you get ich in a reef tank you might aswell say bye bye to all your fish there are two options which may sound creul the first one is save the fish you want and put them in the isolation tank the ones that don't cause any problems and let all your fish die or let every single fish in your aquarium die run it for a least a month (ideally two to three) and add some fish and always quarantine your fish before adding them to the main aquarium try it in tropical and coldwater tanks
omg i never knew to take out the carbon filter... u people will hate me for this but i had several fish.. more than 5 and less than 20 that died of this cause.. yrs ago when i was like 14...
my cat has a pet fish named Temptation shes in the family room since new years
dont listen to his dude. hes full of it. if you want to remove ich, go buy some marine salt. and put your fish in a differnt bucket or bowl or w.e for about 30 mins with around 2 teaspoons of marine salt in it and raise the temperature of the water to 82 degrees. do this ever day for 2 weeks or until the ich is gone :)
i have treated disease this way effectively before. slowly raise the temp and increase the salinity. do not use unchleated copper with fish of smaller scales such as piranhas and other tetras or scaleless like cats.
Stutters a lot, but frankly, it nice to see that someone is actually putting useful information out there. it's scary to see/hear how incompetent some people are when it comes to keeping goldfish...
wow expert village is absolutly the worst i yet to find an expert village video that is decent even if its not fish keeping every video is just not even worth it
ich/ick medicine also kills fish. they are DNA binding substances (sometime carcinogen) and create complex problems in fish health for which their life span become very less.
avoid buying fish from local pet-shops. if you buy check, all other tanks in the pet-shop. if you find a single fish with ich, there is a chance that you might bring the disease at your home tank. in this case keep a secondary tank and allow the fish to stay there for 2-3 weeks under observation. When you see the fish has no sign of sickness, transfer it to the main tank.

1st you do not take the filter out just the charcoal carbon.
2nd you need to raise the temperature to 80 to 86 degrees depending on the type of gold fish for 2 weeks.
This will increase the life cycle of the ick and help get rid of it faster.
3rd you need to add aquarium salt to the tank this will also kill the ick and help with the fishes stress.
4th Do a 1/3 water change every day and Checking pH, amonia, nirtrite
5th use the ick medication for two weeks to be sure you get rid of it.

Hopefully nothing bad happened. But typically you don't want to do a 100% water change because:
1) It stresses the fish out with all the moving.
2) You killed all the good bacteria that rids ammonia, nitrate, and most nitrite.

yes, never ever do a 100% W.C ever if you do theres no bacteria in there which will kill the fish with the ick so youve wrecked a 1 month long cycle from your fish tank

What's a cycle?
rsoares57 2 years ago
if you dont know what a cycle is dont bother getting any fish at all..... if you want to know find out for your self not by asking people a cycle is the benifical bacteria that multiplys during the cycle a cycle lasts about 1 month with no fish in the tank you neen it cycled or the fish will die due to a amontia over crowd

I need your help my guppy has ick she also has 15 fry's how do I get rid of the ick without killing the babies
Animalloverkisskiss 2 years ago
Go to your nearest fish specializing store and ask for medicine. Follow the steps above mostly. I think your baby's are goners because they are incredibly small and probably goin to be overcome with the parasite.

if you get ich in a reef tank you might aswell say bye bye to all your fish there are two options which may sound creul the first one is save the fish you want and put them in the isolation tank the ones that don't cause any problems and let all your fish die or let every single fish in your aquarium die run it for a least a month (ideally two to three) and add some fish and always quarantine your fish before adding them to the main aquarium try it in tropical and coldwater tanks

my cat has a pet fish named Temptation shes in the family room since new years
no ich either!
shamelesstill25 2 years ago
dont listen to his dude. hes full of it. if you want to remove ich, go buy some marine salt. and put your fish in a differnt bucket or bowl or w.e for about 30 mins with around 2 teaspoons of marine salt in it and raise the temperature of the water to 82 degrees. do this ever day for 2 weeks or until the ich is gone :)
mak3myda3 2 years ago
i have treated disease this way effectively before. slowly raise the temp and increase the salinity. do not use unchleated copper with fish of smaller scales such as piranhas and other tetras or scaleless like cats.

Stutters a lot, but frankly, it nice to see that someone is actually putting useful information out there. it's scary to see/hear how incompetent some people are when it comes to keeping goldfish...

ich/ick medicine also kills fish. they are DNA binding substances (sometime carcinogen) and create complex problems in fish health for which their life span become very less.
bz476 3 years ago
avoid buying fish from local pet-shops. if you buy check, all other tanks in the pet-shop. if you find a single fish with ich, there is a chance that you might bring the disease at your home tank. in this case keep a secondary tank and allow the fish to stay there for 2-3 weeks under observation. When you see the fish has no sign of sickness, transfer it to the main tank.
