Why r they giving this movie away for free on google movies make them take it down & pay you for the 4 years they've had it up there. They just violate our rights left and right
in response to the neg givers in no way am i discounting this brothers work. i have written and worked for numerous indie projects. and i know what can be done with a volunteer crew and a non existent budget. Spook was one of the best films by black writer/directors along with Killer of Sheep and Chameleon Street but the diff is the last two had budgets of about 1.5 mill respectively. These days we can shoot on digital and use the power of ppl who will work for free to create a film
I like this dude and I read his book, after watching this interview though, it feels bittersweet. Years ago when I was about 16 or so (I'm 19 now) I was at Kennedy King College. Sam Greenlee (I later found out who it is) came up to me and the man in charge of my community center, I don't remember if he was selling copies of the DVD or talking, but it sucks to know he probably looked at me thinking I would grow into somebody that will always be the same, a white person.
@platypusrex256 RELIC? he's a historical figure...he has a voice... and to quell his voice and prevent him from expressing his view..is indeed conterproductive..He is an artist...not a politician..by the this film did not have the effects nor absurd depictions that the film "Birth of a Nation" had!
Sam Greenlee speaks the truth, if you want to be a real black artist it's better to be free than a "Rich Ho" to Hollywood. All the modern "crossover" culture would rather be loved by whites than have a strong black music and media culture. It's eating crumbs from their tables.
that was interesting about 'we ought to bake our own bread'
but i think it is a bit pretentious of him to label people like f gary for making films for general audiences. it is counter productive to any movement of equality if they segregate themselves.
hollywood doesn't give a shit about us, so we should work together and create film and tv under our own studio. black folks spend 700 billion making white folks rich, i think it time to make ourselves rich. it is time to build our own black america, fuck anyone who thinks that's racist.
Anyone want to meet with me to discuss this process futher my name is Steployd 310.424.5081 is my office number. 340 E. Jefferson just south of downtown los angeles. if we don't do it on our own, it won't happen. CALL ME let's do something. ONLY IF YOU R SERIOUS!!
Thank you so much for posting this. I viewed this a couple of months ago as a bonus in the Spook Who Sat By the Door 25th DVD. Mr. Greenlee speaks the truth. It is a shame he blazed a path and those who followed him ignored it. When will those whiny black filmmakers ever learn?
Love it
