  • @rubyhaleybenjamin yeah i have seen as many as you that's why it's scaring me...we do need rehab haha

  • @rubyhaleybenjamin oh my god! you again! i swear every single video hahahaha this is so random too.

  • I love hearing someone of this talent doing a great job of covering a very different song that I also love. It's one of my favourite Strokes songs, and it shows there's always something else to be done with a song. I thought nobody could cover Stairway to Heaven well, but dammit, Rodrigo y Gabriela's version is amazing.

  • When someone covers a song, it's because they love the song so much, they want the experience of playing it. What Thile has taught me through his many covers is that a song is not always finished when it's originally cut, there's always another perspective, another angle to be found; whether it's "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" or "Heart in a Cage", Thile is always finding and presenting another side to a song that further clarifies the abstract set out by the songwriter.

  • @mandolinfreak2 someone likes linkin park a little to much!

  • You're crazy- and all us hicks know how to spell "broken"

  • I adore the original version of this song - but this is just fantastic!

  • fuking awesome how they have done this song!!!!!- id way rather listen to a version like this then a standard copy....... now its 3 in the morning and your eating alone.............

  • very, very cool. I love what you've done with this.

  • At least he's not trying to be The Strokes. I've been a Strokes fan for years, and a Chris Thile fan for years too, and the songs are different enough that I can appreciate both of 'em.

  • I've been a Strokes fan for years as well.

And I guess I can appreciate that.

But I just can't get into this, man. Just not my style.

  • fair enough but chris thile is one of the most phenomenal musician's of all time and everyone that's ever played with him in any of his bands are all also incredibly talented so don't say he butchered this song. i find this version much more interesting and compelling than the strokes' but i listen to way more rock than bluegrass. i'm just glad you at least said you could appreciate it. just keep in mind that (most) musician's put their heart and souls into what they do before badmouthing them.

  • hey go suck a bag of dicks

  • wow go listen to some linkin park.

  • I've loved Nickel Creek and Chris Thile for years, so I orginally knew his version first. I've gotten into the strokes in the past couple months, and I love them too now. But I still think this is better than the original. Its not an insult to the Strokes, people have to realize that. Thile just knows how to cover songs right...his cover of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground is better than the White Stripes too and I absolutely love them.

  • No, no it is not. White Stripes kick the shit out of this dude.

  • Its a matter of opinion...the White Stipes are one of my favorite bands and yes I am one of those people who thinks Jack White is a genius, hate him or not. But in my opinion Thile's cover is better, i just love the tempo and flow of it. If you dont recognize his absoluetly immense talent then you are just being naive.

  • he does know how to cover songs but nothing is ever better than the orgional, or else he would have never covered it if they didn't think it was soo good.

  • i'm surprised with how awesome it sounds!

  • Not my style of music, but I give them props for an awesome cover. I love the Strokes, but this is like country Strokes.

    I like it.

  • this is way better than the original

  • this shits on the original

  • Evidently, strokes fans have been conditioned to dislike good music.

  • lol

  • I like them both actually. Thile puts a whole new spin on Heart in a Cage, and he still keeps alot of the angst that the Strokes have in the original. people who wouldnt appreciate this version are people who already have negative perceptions about bluegrass, country, or anything involving a mandolin or banjo. they link it with "the dirty south". its a shame....

  • I must say, I'm shocked that so many people think The Strokes' version is better. Thile is a virtuoso... the most talented in the world at his instrument and all these hipster assholes are writing this off as worthless country music. I like The Strokes but these guys are such better musicians. Wake up.

  • Words cannot describe the awsomeness of these people.

  • .....................?

  • this band obviously don't think they are better than The Strokes (and they're not) otherwise they wouldn't be covering their song

  • yea man, don't make it a competition. Thile did this as a tribute to the strokes and a great song.

  • Why does it have to be Chris VS The Strokes? It's a great song, performed by two great talents. This is a brilliant cover, but the original is great as well. You can't say one is better than the other when they're two totally different genres. Stop arguing, and give both the props they deserve.

  • Nothing against the Strokes...they wrote a cool song, they're a great rock band.

But Chris Thile is not only a very gifted and talented instrumentalist, but I really think this guy is musical genius.

  • These guys can't even touch the Strokes.

  • You are being ridiculous. The Strokes are quite good and this is a good song but musically and technically they are at kindergarten level compared to the Punch Brothers.

Maybe you prefer the Strokes doing this song but to make a statement about the Punch Brothers not being able to touch the Strokes is plain ignorance. If you are young then maybe I am being too harsh on you but learn to discern real ability and talent. There's a big musical world out there. Don't cut yourself off from it.

  • My reply here was to the post by electricturf.

  • I agree with every word.Reply well stated.

  • @electricturf Yeah, the Strokes can only touch themselves...

  • Wow! This is quite possibly my favorite song by the Strokes, but man, this version is really cool. I agree that it's very different from the original but...wow, I'm left speechless. That's really, really cool.

  • and now I've understand the original paper book

  • Good! But it sounds like different song

  • it is supposed to sound different

  • this version was put together with more knowledge of theory than the original was.

  • very true, if you have studied music theory, the difference between the cover and the original is clear as day

  • I saw this comment a while back but I had to come back and ask you about your statement on the theory. Can you give an explanation. I am not very educated on music theory.

  • well, Thile uses more advanced harmonics than the strokes do and also, he makes better use of cadences. and you can readily tell that this arrangement wasn't a guitar riff and a bass added to it; all musical harmonics were considered, and specific ones were chosen.

  • gotcha. Thanks

  • I think this cover sounds softer and clearer than the original ,refresh and relaxing version.. nice one!!!

  • its good but not as good as the strokes

  • WTF its wrong with you ppl this version suck jaja the strokes original version is like 1000 times better........ jules sing with more feeling adn the music i way better you can't say this is better man please don't fuck up

  • while I don't really think this version is better you can't really say that jules sings with more feeling.

jules nonchalant attitude towards everything he does, especially his singing, is kind of one of the defining aspects of the Strokes.

  • Chris Thile is about a billion times more talented than the whole of the strokes combined, who are not that bad for a modern rock band. The best you can say for the strokes is that Chris did honor them by covering their song. This tune is awesome live ... Had the pleasure of seeing the Punch Bros./Chris perform it at the Troubadour in Hollywood in February.

  • The Strokes stopped being good after "Is This It", stopped writing garage rock revival and started writing bland rock. Chris Thile is not only more of a musician than any of the Strokes could ever dream to be, this version of the song also beats the pants off the original. His version of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" is also amazing - though I hesitate a bit to say better than the White Stripes'.

  • LMAO!You're so fucking stupid. How can you listen to Room On Fire and tell me it's not Garage Rock? I'll admit that FIOE isn't Garage but it's something just as good if not better, It's Rock & Fucking Roll, they way music should be. I would like to see this guy write better lyrics that Jules did on FIOE, hell on ALL of the strokes albums.

The bootom line is you're an idiot because you can't recognize a band that is gonna go down in history. This video sucks, by the way.

  • Alright, I concede, Room on Fire is also garage revival. That said, they've been becoming less and less so ever since their first EP came out; it's not nearly as dirty and rough around the edges as Is This It. Also, I think that their music got progressively blander, too - and I don't only listen to one genre of music. I never said the Strokes wouldn't go down in history, they probably will. Only because of them could the Libertines get signed, they popularized revival. The video is low quality.

  • Uh, the Libertines? You're forgetting: Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, the Killers, not to mention all sorts of bands in Europe.

The Strokes opened the doors for all of them.

  • There's such a thing as room constraints here. However, the Arctic Monkeys, the View, the Fratellis - hell, most of the British music scene right now - they're more post-Libertines bands than post-Strokes bands. Although the Strokes opened the doors for the Libs, they opened up the doors for everyone else to follow. The View even say that the Libs are their heroes. That said, no one can touch the Libs, musically or lyrically. How many bands can reference heroine and Blake in the same breath?

  • Dude, Arctic Monkeys said themselves that they're huge strokes fans. Thats why they've covered 'Take It Or Leave It' numerous times. They said that without the Strokes there probably would have been no Monkeys.

The View and Fratellis are good though.

They're right loving the Libs, but remember who got the Libs their big break.

    The Strokes!

    They're just legends, man.

One of the best bands of the 2000's if not THEE best.

  • i think is this it and room on fire were fucking awesome.. but the strokes needed to do somthing new .. and they did well with FIOE .. more serious and alot more compelling

  • no offense strokes, but this version is better.

  • i love this one way more than the stokes... you can feel the song the way its supposed to be heard.

  • Have they recorded this version of the song? Can't seem to find it on iTunes.

  • its on how to grow a woman from the ground the album

  • this is great :D:D:D

  • boper's a fucking retard

if we're talking ONLY technical ability (which i'm surely not) the Punch brothers exert WAY more of it in this version than the strokes, and even creatively i prefer this one, and i love the strokes.

  • Great version

  • This was an amazing cover. I'd love to hear that bluegrass album someone said was released.

  • personally I think its great....keep it up guys!

  • any strokes fan knows..that the strokes had a tribute album done all in bluegrass and the strokes loved it. So honestly just be open minded and enjoy music. This is an amazing cover.

  • Fuck you bro thats bullshit

  • You're out of your mind. This version is just as good if not better than the original. Gnarls Barkley covering the Arctic Monkeys is shit, but that's only because the Arctic Monkeys are shit to begin with.

  • I'm advent listener of the strokes and bluegrass/jazz and I like both of them as equally.

  • that was sweet!!!

  • This is great. I also do a cover of this song. Check it out in my videos

  • I really love the strokes version, but this one is really good too!

  • this man is great, lovely version, different from all the traditional covers. The solo sounds wonderful with the mandolin Thanks for posting.

  • Great harmony and instrumental version!

  • This is really nice! Thanks for posting
