I love Chama. It's still pretty remote and "backwoodsy" Unlike Durango, the yuppies aren't there. The bar across the street from the yard was built by supplies hauled by the train, and the footrail is a section of railroad rail. It's reasonbly priced and friendly. (No, I don't get paid for this) LOL
I often wonder why people visit Durango, but miss this spectacular operation just a couple of hours away. The C&T has the best sounding steam ANYWHERE.
Terrific video. Thank you for making it and sharing it with us train lovers. Can anyone tell me what time of the year does this train operate, and how long does the ride last? Thank you.
Those "K" series Mikados aren't just chuffing, working, barking or workin' Hard, they are THUNDERING through the rockies and man do they let everyone know about it. Diesels just rumle tuneless and tonelessly, but a STEAM LOCOMOTIVE works it harder and harder than any other machine! 5***** and favorite!!!!!
If you look again, you see that they only ring the bell as they approach the crossings. At 5:23 when it is not nearing a road crossing, the bell isn't moving.
@lenramirez FRA rules, which the steam operations have to obey just like any other railroad. The bell is used inside yard limits, stations and road crossings. It's a Federal law.
Great video. Enjoyed not having to any rock music with it, Looks and sounds like the second loco is doing all the work and the lead lock is just along for the ride.
I was thinking weed sprayer too, but with the open windows on the passenger cars, got me to thinking they are spraying just water to prevent hot sparks from starting grass fires along the tracks. This is dry country up at these elevations! I'm thinking the fumes from weed killer would not be so nice to C&TS "guests"!!!! Just a thought.

the brilliant point is that the sound is so consistant,a backing track would have no probs, but it doesn`t need one ......great. johnboy

even better they used 488's tender on 487.

I noticed that, it was the same way when I rode it. Guess that with then being strapped for cash they had to make do.

google the "narrow gauge dead goat saloon" strange name but good info on cumbres

Doesn't (or didn't) the Rio Grande (DRG&W) have some sort of three cylinder arraingment of their own design?

Only on one of their standard gage passenger 4-8-2's. These locos are narrow gage.
