I noticed that you used two pieces to do the back and hood. I have been wanting to get into the wrap business and they tell me I should buy a 60" vinyl printer, can you do car wraps with a smaller printer?
I have tried wrapping my PT hood before, with a regular roll of vinyl. We have wrapped a lot of body parts before, but the hood had more curve in it than most parts we've done. We are having issues getting it to lay flat, and not bunch up around the curves. Any suggestions? We have a heat gun (hair dryer). Could it just be the kind of vinyl we are using?
@broken202G it is exactly the vinyl. 3m Controltac and conform vinyls are MUCH easier to heat and stretch around contours without bubbling. You can wrap with regular vinyl, though very time consuming, but I would recommend using heat while going around the curves. Good luck :)
@DANATRINGWOOD stone chips won't really be that big of an issue unless you go drifting on gravel...haha... but you are right, you can always replace a panel. It's funny because some car bras are made with the same material to prevent the paint from chipping. :)
Guys - I have nothing but admiration for you here: I have trouble getting mailing lables on without bubbles, never mind sticking something to a whole damn car :-)
Nice job. I've wrapped a few of these things. you guys ever use that 3M 380 film? It's designed to be heated to excess. We wrap chevy HHR's with it sometimes and sprinter vans. . I dont think it was available when you wraped this pt cruiser though. keep on rockin'
Nice work! I currently tint windows how can I get in the business of car wraps? Is there any good books or training programs that you recommend. For someone who has an average learning curb how long does it take to get good? How much can you charge for a job similar to that PT cruiser? Thanks
why did you do it in so many pieces, why didnt yous print one full side, would have been so much quicker. 3M cool, give the Arlon a go, awesome product, Avery is over rated.
It actually takes the same amount of time, but I prefer one piece as you don't see any seams and it looks nicer. This one was not printed by us, so we made do with what we had. Arlon huh, I'll look into it. Thanks,
The only time the dust affects the wrap is during installation. You don't want to get any particles stuck on the adhesive. Once the installation is complete you do not have to worry about dust.
And why did you wrap the car outside? Wouldn't be better to do it at the garage because of the outside dust? I mean you probably cleaned the car before wrapping but then doing the wrap outside...
We specialize in going out on location to install wraps. Some customers have garages and some don't so we have to roll with the punches. We prefer indoor facilities for the reasons you specified and have a garage locally that we use if they choose to drive to us. However we travel as much as a 2hr radius and sometimes that is not an option.
We overlap 1/4" to 1/2" depending on the graphic. And yes, if you do not overlap seams, the vinyl will shrink when the sun hits it, exposing the vehicle paint underneath.
why do these guys do the wrap in vertical drops so aligning text and ensuring it's all straight is an issue?? Wouldn't it be easier to print in a single length so continuity and alignment won't be an issue?
We usually wrap with as few seams as possible. We have a 63" printer which allows us to do most cars in one panel. This particular customer needed to save as much money as possible, so we ran it on some 54" less expensive media, and as a result had the seams. Sometimes you have to sacrifice perfection to give the client what they want. However, either way you do it, alignment is never an issue if you know what you're doing.
you may have allready said this but how do you get the letters to line up straight i don't understand how you could rap a car with body lines and curves which would take up more material i would just think that it would be angled and stuff ya know i would love to learn how to do this someday i've been doing auto body repair for 2 yrsand i've painted a few trucks this just seem like it would be fun to do too....
We are able to make sure the lettering is straight by measuring. The trick is to measure to the appropriate beauty line of the vehicle as it varies by model. Wrong one and it will look crooked. Designing the lettering on a slant is a tactic that less experienced installers use to ensure that their imperfections will not be seen. We will design text on slants from time to time, but it will always be measured to match the other side. I hope this answers your question.
yeah it does but i don't think i'll have truely know what your talking about till i do it myself it's like painting a car you have to do it fully unlerstand what your looking at and what your looking for... ya know
Usually about 3-5yrs depending on conditions. (ie. weathering, exposure to sun, car washes). Example, If you park your car in the garage on a daily basis, it will last longer than someone who parks on the street.
No it does not damage the paint.. It actually protects it against the suns UV rays. And prevents fading. Any adhesive we use, is completely removable without any damage.
your channel might be the next big hit. u might be like blendtec , ssishredders or somebody! Keep on wrapping cars and posting on yt! keep it up 5/5 stars + favorite

these big stickers are clever they must protect the paint and prevent rust ect

@DANATRINGWOOD yes, they do a great job protecting against uv rays and keep the color from fading on the vehicle.

Thanks for the video. It's cool except you can't read the black text on the blue background, not the best design.

Its called Arlon DPF6000, cheaper than Controltac, and very easy to use, post heating a must because of the repositionable aspects to the material

are wraps the same as digital prints sign shops do that only last around 3 years outdoors?
skjoyner 2 years ago
Yes the wraps are digital (Solvent) prints that are laminated with a uv lam. So you get about 3-5yr outdoor life.

Do you overlap seams or simply butt the sides together? Is there any danger of separation from shrinkage from exposure to the sun's heat?

We overlap 1/4" to 1/2" depending on the graphic. And yes, if you do not overlap seams, the vinyl will shrink when the sun hits it, exposing the vehicle paint underneath.

do you know if you can wrap over primer, or does it have to be paint?

I have wrapped over just primer...and I do not recommend it. It will not last and will CERTAINLY have bubble issues.

good to know, thank you for saving me the hassle

jwo much does it cost to have this done?
ShawnoftheDead420 3 years ago
The price varies depending on square footage. But you would look to spend anywhere around $2,000 - $4,000. The PT Cruiser you see cost about $3,200.
geronimo978 3 years ago
Does applying vinyl damage the paint underneath after some time or can you keep the vinyl on for prolongued periods of time?
