How many listeners here know that the incredible drummer here is NOT Billy Cobham? It's Narada Michael Walden, who went on to produce multi-platinum albums for Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in the 80's and 90's.
@cree8vision: Yeah, NMW has a much lighter touch than BC. Both are tremendous drummers. Have you noticed that NMW has been playing in Jeff Beck's band?
@cree8vision: Yes. Searched Jeff Beck 2010 and did a double take when I saw Narada Michael on the drum kit (with flowers stuck in the bass drums) at Crossroads. Only vids I've found are bootlegs.
NMW brings such an joyful, upbeat personality that JB seems really relaxed. Rhonda Smith is on bass so the overall sound is funkier and Jason Rebello is still on keys and fits right in.
BTW, in an interview with 'Uncut' early this year, JB described JM as "the best guitarist alive". Good taste!
Hey jonvalinski, nice to know I'm not along with my feelings for just how great this recording is. It's the only music since Hendrix's was Third Stone from the Sun, & Moon Turns Tides and
Cobhams Spectrum which emphasizes establishing a dramatic, cosmic soundscape, in which a funk based fusion groove can flourish. The beautiful and really scarry thing about Miles Out is the resolution with the remergence of "that Monster Ghost sound" at the end.
One last comment on this incredible performance. If anyone wants to know what being in big surf feels like,....this sound captures it like nothing I have ever heard. Characterizing the "going over the falls" sensation, perfectly. very scary stuff.
@1Delta I was staggered that this fabulous piece of music wasn't here, so I added it. I have a few live recordings from this period, and as you can imagine John's guitar synth is extraordinary when used on stage !
@YouzTube99 Many have already uploaded much live John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra to Youtube already. You can obtain much of this great music for free at jazzfusion.tv
I guess this was something called a 360 Systems Frequency Shifter, that made this sound but clearly they mixed it with other ideas involved. I've heard of it before but can't reconcile what I'm hearing in the whole intro of this song to this synth device. It's one of the few audio recordings where the creativity clearly outstrips my imagination. definitely reminds me of Hendrix's soundscape experiments on Third Stone from the Sun and a lot of the Electric Ladyland LP.
I first heard this LP right when it came out. This song was then, and remains, one of a kind. I'm trying to find out what Mclaughlin used to get that incredible, other worldly sound that starts the song off. never heard that sound since, and it's been like 35 years or something.
then he goes into that Headhunters funk bass line and clearly one of the guitar sounds is coming through that guitar synth that he was using. IMHO, this performance stands alone for sheer cosmic power.
@1Delta That was a Guitar synth made by "360 Systems". Back in the 70's it was the first guitar synth,McLaughlin always used to say that it couldn't do it's math fast enough. But he got some sounds out of it.
@1Delta One of the first times I ever played my copy, in the early 80's round a friends house, his father had some large speakers.
I soon obtained a pair of Leak speakers with 12" cones that complemented this track perfectly. John McLaughlin uses feedback as we would use conversation !
The intro is almost like a soundtrack to Edvard Munch's "The Scream" . Planet Earth's pain personified. Absolute masterpiece.

Music ahead of our times, Mahavishnu rocks real skillful musicians. nowadays music is very crappy.

I love this song, McLaughlin funk is the best. He goes WAY out there. I wish he still played this stuff. Love his tone.

@ezeroh1 - Herbie Hancock is not involved - the swirling feedback sounds are from guitarist John McLaughlin's guitar frequency shifter.

I guess this song is named for Miles Davis. This is something like what Hendrix would have played had he lived.
