they can't do this stuff today anymore. Why? they simply can't...maybe they can move faster and more explosive now BUT they don't have that core motive of dance...exactness, communication and things that are not physical...its like its their default...AMAZINGLY UNEQUALED even today...
My studio did the original choreography in this video to this song at this tempo! Too bad it disnt look as good with 12 people doing it! But it was still cool!!! I was so happy my instructor said that shed teach us all of the steps so there is one teacher that still teaches them!
@strwberykiss12 You are soooooo right.....Donald definitely made the movie...so brilliant, funny, and adorable!!! He did win the Golden Globe for it:)))))))
@strwberykiss12 You are so right...Donald should have. He did get the Golden Globe for it, though:)))...no one more talented or adorable than Donald:)))
@faith4094 I'm not sure about talent, Darlene, but aren't I almost as cute as Donald?? lol Actually, this is one of my favorite scene's in all of movie-dom and I think Donald O'Connor showed he could keep-up with the great Gene Kelley every step of the way!! I'm sure you agree!! :))
@dlpine71 I sure do agree...Donald was the best...he could be brilliant comedically (I don't think Kelly would be doing Make 'Em Laugh) and just as brilliant in his elegant romantic dances and solos as in Call Me Madam, There's No Business Like Show Business, Anything Goes, Walking My Baby Back Home, and more....AND, YOU are a cutie!!!!!!:)))))))
one of THE most tiring dance scenes in all of history- just look at the way their panting after they yell "A!" my my my....if that isn't talent, i don't know what is! :)
I love this dance but that was not the video I was looking for. I'm looking for another video of this movie part, they are dancing on a different song wich says "come on/here" at @2:22. Does anyone know it please?
@caitiez19 I know I've been looking since last night but the only song that comes to mind with "come on/here" is Al Jolson's Rosie. If you ever find out, please post it :)
As a dancer this is one of the best routines ever choreo'd, danced by two of the best tappers ever, Kelly's technique is nigh on perfect, and every dancer (tapper) wants to be O'Connor (male or female :))
Won't be seen again, folks. Can you imagine Brad Pitt being held up to these chops? I won't say bankrupt, MAYBE there's a new, better standard. I'm just waiting to see it.
Amazing, i wonder who choreographed, im guessing Gene choreographed, and its amazing, no slip-ups, and the singing was perfect. The lyrics are really tongue-twisting, its amazing they got it right all in one go and the dancing. Wow, truly iconic.
Gene Kelly is AMAZING! and Donald such a bro when it comes to dance numbers; he doesnt try to outshine kelly (which wouldnt actually be possible) but instead he compliments him. those two are incredibly talented
@jsf5146 Donald could outshine Kelly, especially in a number like Make 'Em Laugh, so brilliantly funny, or in a romantic dance, in tails, with Vera-Ellen in Call Me Madam or dancing with Mitzi Gaynor in Anything Goes, just to mention a few. Donald could be hysterically funny or incredibly romantic and sexy...check out Walking My Baby Back Home...fabulous routines. On a show a few years ago, 5 beautiful Hollywood actresses ranked Donald as the best kisser in Hollywood...I've seen him - YES!!!
@katiep1125 because nowadays people pay for all kind of crap withour problem (;agy gaga anyone), co no performers have to work their ass off, why should they if they get paid just for looking good/strange/unique, since people have too much money to waste anyway...
the current stars dont have the attention span and the actual drive and determination to complete the lessons to be this good. Whats sad, most of the dancing back then was taught by family members and by programs that didn't have to have too much disiplin to get the kids to learn the dance steps. Blame it on society!
@katiep1125 They still. You're just not looking at the right "stuff". Today's show business is over saturated with greedy uncreative money hungry fuckers that don't deserve to be called artist. Look for people and artists with passion and you will find "stuff" like this.
@katiep1125 A lot of this went away with the old studio system, though the late 40's - ear;y 50's were more of a transition period. A actor had to be much more versatile then to make it big, act, sing and dance.
I was very fortunate that my parents and grandparents loved films like this and would make a habit of viewing them with us kids as family time.
@Ullarsskald1989 I don't understand why other people my age don't appreciate stuff like this. I just turned 20, so obviously this type of entertainment is way before my time but I would watch this or the Dick Van Dyke Show ANY DAY rather than Jersey Shore or other crappy shows they run nowadays. I miss the days where people had to have talent like this in order to get noticed. Now everything is just watered down and not even worth watching. It's sad that things changed =(
@katiep1125 Amen! I get laughed at because, by & large, I like shows like Hogan's Heroes, McHale's Navy & the old musicals & movies instead of the junk that passes for entertainment these days. (I will say I make exceptions for a few modern shows, but never have the time to watch them.)
Yeah Donald is hot. I especially love how he holds his won dancing next to Gene Kelly. Gene could out dance most of his co stars back in the day. Gotta love Donald tho! And Gene Kelly.
Ive watched this a 1000 times and I've never noticed how fast this routine is. That takes skill ;) and yes, Donald O'Connor is most definatly the sexy one here :D
@alexoldmovies27 Terrific!!!! I LOVE it!!! Check out my channel for a great Donald channel picture and videos, montages, and tributes, as well as those of sorrowfulflower, catwomanpl1, donaldo'connorfan, wasittoyou, vaudevillefanatic, and others:)))))))
@practicalmagic4 I'm all for it:))))) Actually, a bunch of us have a club of sorts....look at my channel and those of many of my friends....Donald picures, videos etc. ......some of us talk all the time via e-mail.....we have loads of Donald's movies.....practically all of them....we've shared, etc. We have those when he was very young, when he was a huge teen star, right up to SITR and beyond. LOVE him!!!!!!!
@moehowardfan Good thoughts, please, but check out my channel picture - Donald in swimtrunks - he looks FABULOUS!!!!!! Muscles!!!!! Everyone is crazy about that picture!! Girls/women stop to gawk:)))) It's with his daughter and their HUGE dog, named O'Flynn. Check out my friend's channels, too. We have everyhting Donald - videos, montages, clips from all of his movies, tributes, etc. He had it all!! ( Those pants he wears in the Good Morning Number!:))))))) )
Donald O'Connor was the most underated performer of his time. He could do it all. Dance, sing, act and he was a comic too. He was over shadowed by Fred and Gene. He could keep up with Gene and Freds as far as tap dancing goes. He was a Holleywood Icon, and is remember by those who saw his movies.
@Rtmax45 Donald was the BEST - he could do it all - he was a teen idol and made hugely popular movies at Universal; he won the Golden Globe for Singin' in the Rain and won an Emmy as Best Male Star. He has fabulous performances in so many movies and did romantic dances as skillfully as tap dancing and comedic ones - he was an amazing talent!!! He was a lot younger than Gene and Fred and couldn't take as full advantage of musicals' Golden Age, but he gave us many, many brilliant performances.
This is one of my top 5 movies! All of it incredibly funny! Love all the numbers - especially when they throw in the jazzy parts. Also the Gene-Cyd in the green dress dance.
@rungirlmgg OMG i think you could be my best friend!!! Donald is amazinngggggggg XD gene is cool but hes no where near as amazing as Donald! in the Make Em Laugh scene in Singing in the Rain, his eyes are SOOO blue, he is so handsome (:
@faith4094 No i havent, I actually have only seen him on youtube and in Singing in the rain .. i will be sure to check it out though. Im only 14 so i dont know alot of his movies but i see him alot on youtube and im fascinated! he is amazing, i love old movies, I will be sure to check them out. I loved his dance/sing number in the Milk Man.. so cute (:
I've always loved Donald OConnor and he in my opinion was just so much cleaner and lighter in his dance moves in this scene then Kelly. He was so underrated. Just think how hard it must have i've been to keep their distance and balance on the table while maintaining complete synchronicity starting at 1:01. AMAZING!!! Two scenes I love is 1:25 when Don sits on lap on professor and does the hand point to Kelly's feet.... Love it. And how effortlessly he steps in to time at 1:30 to match Kelly.
@demm80s You are sooo right about Donald - love him!!!!! Check out my channel and others who have written on it - we love Donald and have loads of his great movie clips.
@m3liee13 Yes, we are in love with Donald - his leading ladies said they fell in love with Donald - they couldn't help it! He was such a wonderful man and an enormous talent, not to mention adorable:)))
@digimaster89 we allow lower standards to be "hip", and keep getting worse quality students, and awful grammar. Maybe more rap music will solve the problem.
@Dave78mYT One can like rap, heavy metal, etc and still appreciate great dancers like Kelly, O'Connor, Astaire, etc. It actually is all on what your parents expose you to. I love classic films and it's the result of my parents showing them to me from a young age. This is one of my favorite performances because they dance so beautifully yet they maintain their masculinity. It seems more and more these days male dancers seem to think they have to lose their masculinity to be a good dancer.
Donnald O'Connor is my icon, i wish i can sing and dance like him one day, I'm gonna work hard for it! but it's almost impossible.....I'm probably the only 20 year old whose icon is someone like Donald and not P. Diddy or some stupid rapper
@santidipp More and more young people are LOVING Donald and are realizing that he was one of the most incredible talents ever - no one did all of the things he did as well as he did them - he was a brilliant dancer, a terrific actor, singer, comedian, pratfall artist, as well as a composer( he wrote beautiful songs - he sang some on his T.V. shows and he wrote a symphony) director, producer, and musician (he played piano, drums, and clarinet) You used the right word - ICON - definitely!!!!!
Where has all the talent, entertainment, and sheer class gone? Why can't there be movies like this anymore? It's captivating to see such talented people, and its a shame to see such an amazing era and culture lost.
Incredible 3 minutes of raw talent, and entertainment. Gene was such a perfectionist, it's so great watching Donald matching him step for step, and keeping up with Gene's relentless energy. A joy to watch.
Ah yes. Back when entertainers truly had real talent, they could dance, sing, act, and probably play at least one instrument. Real entertainers, not singing some non sense about tits, ass, big rims and smoking weed.
Man, this is the real thing, this was the talent. I swear today we have some worthless untalented actors and musicians like..... Charlie Sheen, Katy Perry (trust me, I listened one of her concerts and she couldn't sing to save her live), Kesha, Like all the rappers who tries to sing (kanye west, lil wayne, and Disney "musicians and artists'
I wish more movies were made where the actors actually put in the legwork and you can tell they're having fun doing it. That look they have at 1:35 says "We are going to tear shit up now!"
Why did the good stuff have to die out... this here... real talent--I can't bare to watch the bologna that's popular now a days... has nothing on the real stuff :)
they can't do this stuff today anymore. Why? they simply can't...maybe they can move faster and more explosive now BUT they don't have that core motive of dance...exactness, communication and things that are not physical...its like its their default...AMAZINGLY UNEQUALED even today...

@Butters3429 My eyes are on Donald!!!!:)))))))

Check out my channel and others who have written on it - we love Donald and have loads of his great movie clips.

they make this look effortless, the modern stuff don't hold a tap shoe to these routines :D

digimaster89 7 months ago 3
@digimaster89 we allow lower standards to be "hip", and keep getting worse quality students, and awful grammar. Maybe more rap music will solve the problem.
Dave78mYT 6 months ago
@Dave78mYT One can like rap, heavy metal, etc and still appreciate great dancers like Kelly, O'Connor, Astaire, etc. It actually is all on what your parents expose you to. I love classic films and it's the result of my parents showing them to me from a young age. This is one of my favorite performances because they dance so beautifully yet they maintain their masculinity. It seems more and more these days male dancers seem to think they have to lose their masculinity to be a good dancer.

Ke$a, P. Diddy, EMINEM, Souja Boi, Kanye West and Britney Spears just disliked this video
santidipp 7 months ago
Donnald O'Connor is my icon, i wish i can sing and dance like him one day, I'm gonna work hard for it! but it's almost impossible.....I'm probably the only 20 year old whose icon is someone like Donald and not P. Diddy or some stupid rapper
santidipp 7 months ago
@santidipp More and more young people are LOVING Donald and are realizing that he was one of the most incredible talents ever - no one did all of the things he did as well as he did them - he was a brilliant dancer, a terrific actor, singer, comedian, pratfall artist, as well as a composer( he wrote beautiful songs - he sang some on his T.V. shows and he wrote a symphony) director, producer, and musician (he played piano, drums, and clarinet) You used the right word - ICON - definitely!!!!!
faith4094 7 months ago 2
Where has all the talent, entertainment, and sheer class gone? Why can't there be movies like this anymore? It's captivating to see such talented people, and its a shame to see such an amazing era and culture lost.
damonisMINE96 7 months ago 3
@molliecoyle Good idea, but so many people would refuse to do so that it would be a bit of a hassle to pull off.
NatKingHarkinian 7 months ago
