I made thirty of these, and I found that the soil in the bottom remained wet constantly, became foul and it developed root rot. Better to just use one bucket with gravel in the bottom, and a lot of holes underneath. If you want self watering, go to a drip system.
Execelent video. I put some seeds into mine. Did not grow at all. Going to put a seedling in like your video suggest. When you cut the larger of the two holes in your bucket did the bucket try to escape?
I have one when a trellis I bought at JoAnn's I drilled two holes and stuck the trellis in the holes it has worked well others I just stuck bamboo in the planting hole and tied the plants to the bamboo with pieces of cut up panty hose. Good luck!
I'm getting ready to do my first set of buckets for tomatoes, peppers and some basil. I'm curious, however, as to how to how I should stake the tomato plants, etc once they start to grow?? I realize that may sound like a dumb question, but this is my first attempt at growing food in buckets.
